I want to eat knowledge.

Hello folks! Blackhand here, not playing the role of Vidicus at the moment, as I have a rather curious question for all of the smart folks on this forum. To begin, this question is creation of an urge that has recently opened in my mind, after listening to about three/four hours worth of words that Niel deGrasse Tyson had to share with the world.

For the past year or so, I have been undergoing a massive shift in terms of character after emerging from an ordeal that I hope none of you ever have to go through. Learning from it made me develop two goals in my head: To become strong and wise enough to face far worse things to come in the future. To help change the world in my own way, which was based off a plan that involved me doing that first goal, than traveling to the best and worst places this world had to offer and changing the life of at least one person there.

That being said, Niel deGrasse Tyson helped open a few doors in my head that the education system of America, if not most modern day countries, failed to do. These doors lead to rooms, which at this very moment are rather empty... but they they yearn to be filled with knowledge that until recently, I never would have bothered to go through the process of obtaining. Before these doors were open, I always frowned upon math as something that I never saw myself using in my life. All those equations and terms to remember, what use would they be to me? My plan before this revelation was... looking back on it, rather poor, so I will not go into the details.

But now the plan has changed, or rather, improved immensely. With these improvements comes a different outlook on education. I come to realize that a new era to be recorded in the history of men is drawing near, if not already upon us. This era will be one that requires men capable of performing a perfect calculation, and crafting a full proof plan to escort his accomplices into the unknown. This is an era in which I wish to be one of the many pilots in, rather than just a mere passenger or observer.

I realize that in order to execute my new plan perfectly, I will need education that a High School in Hawaii can not offer me, even with IB classes. I'm already looking into joining a school organization that, with luck, can allow me to study in a higher-level school outside America, but for now I have chosen to resort to books.

TLDR: SKIP TO HERE

At the moment, my ability in math ends at what I was taught in Algebra 1, and even then I forget most of the details. Think the most I remember how to do involves matrics, and the basic Y= M X +.

Now that the big backround is out of the way, my question to yo all is this: What books would you recommend I read to get started in what I hope to be a part-time Astro Physicist career down the road? I'm very certain that I can take on college level reading, so any book will do me good as long as it does an excellent job at teaching concepts rather than trying to force them down your head.

I'd also like to know if there are any movies or documentaries you lot would recommend I look into? Anything to help expand my knowledge regarding science-related studies would do, just shove it in my brain!

Looking forward to the responses. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to stop Vidicus from locking up another one of his victims in our attic. That place is getting to damn crowded with bones and two-year old cheetos.

Cosmos by Carl Sagan television series is the best educational thing ever, he is so cool and gives possibly the least confrontational rebuffal of religion I,be ever seen.

Wonders of the universe with Brian Cox is basically an updated cosmos, also, if you can get your hand on nova,s Einsteins big idea, it is a great watch. It is a documentary mixed with a film about many key figures in the science world and really gets you into te he discoveries and also the scientists lives.

Your tldr is almost
aslong as your actual article, thsis was meant to go at the end of the post, but i,m trying to use the forums using a tablet for the first time ever.
Bill brysons book how the universe was created or something, I can't remember the title, is great as well

Serious maths, but even if the numbers go over your head for the moment, lots of information.

Non maths books for background science, my personal (opinion) favourites are 'Dreams of a Final Theory' by Steve Weinberg, and for a more 'new age' approach, 'The Dancing Wu Li Masters' by Gary Zukav or 'The Tao of Physics' by Fritjof Capra.

[Unfortunately, astrophysics as we know it started with the invention/discovery of calculus, you need to learn some. Sad but imo true.]
