I want to submit a new game idea

Post » Tue May 14, 2013 5:30 am

I have a new game idea that I can promise you, will make you very popular if you accept my terms. It is a "Hunger Games" idea, i know kinda lame, but if you make it the way i want you to, will be very popular. I already have high support from the community of my school, (yes I'm in high school and i did lie for my age but hear me out on this) I've only received good reviews of my idea and most of my school consists of gamers. I will only give you my idea after you've accepted my terms through private contact and have legally agreed to not take my idea. I will give you my email to start the contact, then I will find a more private or trustworthy way of contact.

There are several reasons, but the main one is not many are going to go through the time and effort of contacting you (and giving out your personal Email is a very bad idea). I'm not trying to be rude or mean, but thats just how I'm calling it.

This isn't my personal email, and you do make a valid point about the contacting thing.

You're gonna need to say that to a lot of people right away...

Everyone knows that Community Discussion is where hopes and dreams come to die. And then there's the fact that these threads bring out the worst in the forum members here.

Wow, that was a interesting read....

Anyways gdabs2, these types of threads dont usually work very well. Your new, your young, you dont seem to have much faith in your work as you said it was lame, you admitted that it was Hunger Games idea (which translates to your inspired by it and it can possibly come off as a knock off), just because your friends think it's cool doesnt mean it's the greatest idea ever (there your friends for a reason, you have the same interests and there for they will most likely think it's good), and you demand that we except your terms.

I'm really not trying to be rude or mean as I like to help the new guys here where I can, but understand that I knew this thread was destined for disaster when I read your first sentence :

and saw that you joined today and that was your first post.

Look. You seem like a somewhat nice guy, if absolutely clueless. Well actually, you don't. You come off as an overconfident person whom thinks he knows a lot about a subject that he really knows nothing about.

The fact of the matter is that nobody on the Bethesda Development Team is going to care what some Hike School kid has to say, especially if they have no clue how to properly get in contact with the team to propose their idea. Have you considered what your idea will require? What kind of audience will like it? How will it be distributed and what not? Just because people at your Hike School say that they think it's a good idea, that doesn't mean it is. You know what else people in High School think is good? Anything. Seriously. You're basing the success of your dream-product off of the opinions of the easily-amused and often stupid masses.

Forget about it. Just forget about your idea. If you are REALLY serious about this, then do some research in the work field for video game development, and I mean some serious research. No stone unturned. Get your head out of the clouds and start asking yourself: "How do I come off toward others? Toward the people I'm trying to persuade? Toward the people I'm trying to impress?" Furthermore, ask yourself this: "Who's input on the matter is more valuable? Someone qualified with the subject, or someone that, like me, is just a dreamer without a clue on reality."

You're not going to get your idea anywhere by demanding that you be contacted by a busy company that makes more than enough money to support itself on a game forum they hardly ever check. All that's going to do is show the world that you don't have a damn idea what you're doing.

You make some very good points, and i said the Hunger Games part was lame because that is what people usually first think but if you give my idea a try, I'm am sure you you'll like it

I am stealing this and calling it... The Poptart Tragedy.

You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll wtf.

Actually on-topic, though: there's not much harm in just designing it here and there on your own. I did that for about two or three years--concept art, scripts, maps, piles and piles and pages and pages of game ideas. It was freaking fun to plan, even knowing here and there it may (read: would most likely) never come to fruition. But it was still fun.

1. Learn to code (language of your choice)

2. Enslave friends who have artistic ability and force them to make textures

3. Enslave friends who know how to grammar and force them to write a story

4. Make game

5. Make website with new found coding abilities and use parents credit card for hosting fees

6. Put game on Steam Greenlight (once again with parents credit card)

7. ???

8. Profit

Alright, boys and girls - fun's over. Guess what? Forum rules still apply, even if you find someone's thread laughable. That means don't insult other members, and if I have to spell it out to any of you again, then it's going to come in the form of an official warning and a suspension.

gdabs2, I hate to say it but the gist of the responses is probably correct. I highly doubt Bethesda is ever going to contact someone about their game idea. Think of it this way - the whole company (probably even down to their tax lawyers) is full of people who are interested in gaming. And I doubt there's a single one there who doesn't have more than enough of their own game ideas. That's one thing a game studio is never short on.

Most companies won't even look at an idea. Not for copyright reasons, but because they need to see at least a proof of concept to even get their interest. I can't fault your enthusiasm, though - and generally the advice from inside the industry is to take that idea and make something with it. Be it a mod, a text game, really anything you can throw together. Even then your chances are pretty slim that any company is going to put aside their own game concepts to work on yours, but at least you might be working towards getting your foot in the door.

Good luck.

Also, http://www.zenimax.com/external.php?locale=en-us&url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_221/6582-Why-Your-Game-Idea-svcks article from the Escapist explains everything pretty well. An oldy but a goody.

I don't think the Bethesda devs read the forums regularly, (and community discussion least of all), they do pop up occasionally, but if you have a business proposal this isn't the best channel to contact them through. Also, you might have better luck pitching it too a smaller development group than Bethesda (who have more than enough IP's at their disposal at the moment, so they probably won't use your proposal even if it has robot dinosaurs in it).

Also, if you have some credentials in software or game development your ideas will probably go further coming from someone in the industry, and making a little demo or drawing some concept art will help your idea be taken more seriously than if it is just in text.

A harsh truth, but this is the general stance in the industry.

http://www.3dbuzz.com/

That's a website that has both free and paid-for lessons on C#, C++, Java, Unity, UDK, etc. etc. etc.

http://unity3d.com/

Unity is a pretty good cross-platform engine (though IIRC most of the cross-platform stuff requires Unity Pro). There's also other engines you can use for non-commercial work (UDK, Cryengine, etc).

I would suggest learning/reading up on a little bit of at least the bare basics from everything (2D/3D design and animation, pseudocode, then actual code from one of the MANY languages, learning how to navigate an engine, etc). That way, you have at least an idea of what it takes to accomplish this.

In the end, no one is going to make YOUR game for you. Unless you're an investor with a lot of money to back it, the only way it's going to get done most likely is you doing it yourself. So learn one or more skill-sets then find others that can do what you can't and spend the next couple of years working on it.
