I want my unwitnessed actions to really go unnoticed

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:56 am

I just killed a male guard indoors, no witnesses except for my companion.

Then messages started popping up: my rep with his faction just went downhill, my reputation with the place changed to whatever... but how in the nine hells can someone know if no one saw it?

VERY unrealistic...

Is there a mod that alters that without tweaking tons of things?

Thanks in advance.

From the wiki:
Any faction member can be killed with no loss of reputation, though only if the player remains hidden or in caution for the kill without it progressing to danger. This has been changed in the 14th of December update. Players now lose reputation for killing a faction member regardless of a successful sneak kill unless that weapon is silenced and the player remains completely hidden.

So it needs to be a melee weapon or silenced gun... I can kind of agree with it, but it would be nice if it was a little more realistic... like have the factions have radios, and they have to call in the attack before you lose faction reputation... so you could like kill a small, isolated outpost with one missile killing like 3-5 people with no reputation loss because no one had time to call it in.

EDIT: Maybe suggest it be an option in this mod?

But the thing is, I used my silenced 22 as I always did before. I haven't played in quite a while, so I was unsure about what used to happen before (I wasn't aware of this change in the last patch, Steam keeps the game up-to-date for me).

I guess something is broken in this new system then...

Still, is there a mod out there that takes care of that? I did several searches at Nexus, to no avail... and the "gameplay" category has 74 pages or so...

Thanks for the answer. ;)

Edit: Just saw your edition, I'll take a look. Thanks again.

It works fine for me when I use the bladed gauntlet, I'll try it with the silenced 22 and see what happens. Are you killing them in one hit?

Well, in this case, coincidentally it was... :/

It always bothers me when I'll kill two random legionaries and then suddenly the whole Legion hates me. How did they know it was me? There definitely needs to be a fix for this.

Just tried it with the silenced pistol.

Hidden killed 3 Kings just outside the King School without any rep loss (killed the fourth one without being hidden and lost rep.)
Hidden killed Blake (crimson caravan merchant) without any rep losses
Hidden killed two powdergangers at the correctional facility with no rep loss.

It might be a bug in a mod you're using or something.

Odd... do you have a companion? Could it be possible that he (she, in my case) is the culprit, the witness that the game is considering?

I will perform other tests and will post the results later. Thanks for letting me know from your side. ;)

For the first test I had Cass (I decided to randomly kill the Van Graffs before moving on to the second test and Cass didn't survive), I also had Cass with me while I was Clawed Gauntlet killing random NCR people earlier on and nothing ever went wrong with that.

Also I had used the console to set my guns skill to 100 and I was using hollow pointed ammo, and head shots if that matters. Head shots would usually kill the people I was attacking in one hit, while other shots would just take like half their health away and then they'd detect me and I'd lose rep after killing them.

I also have her.

I just killed a member of the Followers of the Apocalypse (using the silenced 22 of course), there was just the three of us in the room and nobody else in the entire floor.

Look what just happened: http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/6460/stealthfail.jpg.

And I just have one or another mod, like the sprint mod, better headshots and one that adds a black duster that I haven't even found yet...

Edit: BTW, it was a one-shot kill...

Nevermind, phoenix1213: it happens that she was the culprit after all, for some odd reason; I just told her to wait outside, closed the door and this time no message popped up, nothing.

I will take a careful look at your mods though, maybe you have something there that is counteracting this unwanted side effect.

Who would have known? My own companion is ratting me out... :P

Thank you a whole bunch for your help and concern.

Edit: Another test here, and without Cass: before the patch, if you maneged to kill more than one people in the same "Vats round", so to speak, the murder would go unnoticed.

Not anymore I guess... killed three people in a room exactly that way, one bullet each, no outside witness, but nonetheless I gained infamy.

That doesn't make sense, this patch just ruined what was perfectly working, IMHO...

It seems that this is random.

On top of what I said above (edit part), sometimes I kill someone without anyone around and get the rep for that, after that loading the game and merely repeating the process and this time everything goes well, like it was supposed to.

Obsidian, for crying out loud, If it isn't broken, don't "fix" it!

It kind of ruined a very important aspect of my play style...

I totally agree. A mod like that would be great. Because sometimes I don't know why but this reputation system reminding me The Psychic Imperial Soldiers from TES: Oblivion. :sigh:

If you sneak around, use a silencer and never get into combat mode (Danger mark in sneak mode), you can get away with murder.
I managed to wipe out Cottonwood Cove while keeping Legion reputation on 'Neutral'.

That said, I would love to see the mod described in OP.

Do you have the latest patch? I run the game on Steam, so it is always up-to-date and it seems that this latest patch simply ruined this aspect.

You said that we can get away with murder, but not quite. Here, sometimes I achieve that, most of the times I don't. I can't put my finger on it, I thought it was the companion but it is not; I just tried to kill an NCR soldier, there was absolutely no one around, and no matter how many times I loaded the game, I keep getting the "credits" for it (always using my silenced 22).

We urgently need a mod like Oblivion's "No psychic guards"... :(

Another thing: ok, I cand understand the requirement of a silenced gun, but and when there is no one around? Like inside a house in the middle of nowhere? I tested it with my trail carbine, got caught in the act by, I don't know, the spirits maybe. :)

This needs some serious tweaking, some serious fime-tuning... edit: fine-tuning

I agree completely. It makes me crazy that I kill isolated individuals, or small groups, and my reputation is affected. If there is no one left alive and the NPCs I killed had no way to communicate out of the area then how could anyone possibly know I killed them? I could use my loudest weapon and it should be okay. It is exactly like the Oblivion psychic guards. And it is exactly as annoying.

I don't think it's spirits though that pass the information, I think it's the crows. :)

I've got the latest patch, no mods and have killed everyone on map with companions and no rep loss.
As long as I had a silenced weapon.
It even does the same if you don't sneak, have a silent weapon and let a companion perform the kill with a noisy gun.

By the sounds of it you've got a glitch in the mods, one that unsilences the weapons mayhaps.

Try using silenced weapon against 5 Legion Assasins!!! You'll get battered even with Power Armour lol
