Warcraft Movie confirmed for 2015 release

http://www.playerattack.com/news/2013/10/02/blizzard-confirms-warcraft-movie-release-in-2015/

This is the first concrete information we've heard about the film for months. Just last week, we heard rumours that Colin Farrell and Paula Patton were reportedly in talks for two major roles, but nothing had really been confirmed for the project since it picked up the award-winning Bill Westenhofer as Visual Effects Director.

San Diego Comic-Con attendees were treated to a "mood piece" concept trailer, where director Duncan Jones explained the project would be a blend of live-action and computer-generated effects, hinting that the traditional rivalry between Orcs and Humans will play a major part.

We are waiting (im)patiently for further news on the project - production is set to commence early 2014.

Most movies based on video games svck of course, but considering the funding and resources that Blizzard themselves are able to contribute to this project, I'm cautiously optimistic about it,

This will be terrible. Just because they can fund it means nothing. How many big budget titles are terrible?

As someone who has zero idea about these sorts of things, is Warcraft and WoW the same thing?

Warcraft 1, 2 and 3 were fantasy RTS games. World of Warcraft is an MMORPG set in the same universe after the events of Warcraft 3.

I'll watch it because I played WC 3 and FT back in the day.

Those two games, man. That was my damn childhood (More or less I suppose, my teenage years.) Right up to where Starcraft 2 sapped the community. Damn bust still killed my favorite game...

Edit: Holy [censored] this was my 1000th post. I am not disappointed.

Wow, I am not expecting anything good from this. Last time I expected something good from Blizzard led to major disappointment.

the WarCraft universe gets a bad rep because of "stories" of people ruining their lives by being obsessed with WoW (which happens with any game, its not an MMO exlusive thing)..

But what you have to remember is, the Warcraft Universe has been around for a decade prior to WoWs development (just as TES has been around for along time before TESO), and it has (arguably) more and deeper lore then even TES, and that lore evolves on a monthly basis..

Anyways, I see many issues with a Warcraft movie...

Lets say it takes place post WC3, but pre-WoW..

the Alliance and the Horde had a very unstable Political Relationship.. so it would likely have to focus on one side being "good" and the other "evil"...

If the Main Character was a Human, Dwarf, or Night Elf the hardcoe Horde fans are gonna have a riot...
Now, if the MC was an Orc, Troll, Tauren, or Forsaken, the hardcoe Alliance supporters are going to grab the Pitchforks and march on Orgrimmar...

the only real way i see around this is for it to focus on an event where Both the Horde and the Alliance work towards a common goal.. but in all of Azeroths History that has only happened on a few rare occasions (Such as with the Lich King)...

Or, it could be and Origin Story for a beloved Character such as Thrall.. but he has already had his Origin told in various Novels..

No matter how they do it, its gonna tick someone off "that character was not betrayed properly", "the dirt in Lakeshire is the wrong color", "that faction should have been good not evil", "Magic doesn't work that way", "what she just said goes against lore as stated in "..

the Warcraft universe has some of the most serious Lore fanatics you will ever see... and I am sure a movie is going to cause them to lash out... it wouldn't be the first time..

Pretty sure Metzen once said that any Warcraft movie would have to be told from the Alliance perspective for the sake of making it relatable for the audience. (He then came out with some gibber about his heart 'being with the Horde' to try to settle the inevitable uproar).

Horde leaders have also had a lot more focus on them in WoW, allowing them to become more interesting (I'm a Hordie myself), so giving the Alliance some time might not be a bad idea.

yeah, I was also a "Horder" back when I used to play (Gotta love Sylvanas "Banshee Queen" Windrunner)..

Still, the warcraft Universe has a long and complicated History.. what would a Movie Focus on? the events prior to WoW? a Certain Quest-line (like Onyxia)? an Expansion (Like the Burning Crusade or Lich King)? or a group of would be heroes putting together an Army to occupy Crossroads (I used to love fighting those off... then they released the BGs and world PvP suffered a hit it never recovered from)? maybe the Origin of one of the Racial Leaders?

and what time frame would it be? pre-WC3, during WC3, Post-WC3/pre-WoW, Vanilla WoW, Burning Crusade, Lich King, Cataclysm...

same

because Cat was the final straw for most WoW players...

game used to be hard and challenging, it used to be a major accomplishment to reach level 40 and having enough money for a Mount, used to be a challenge getting together a large enough group of people ready for PvP and march with an army of a few hundred players toward Stormwind or undercity..

then they began making it to easy and to accessible.. the once thriving "world PvP" aspect was replaced with "BattleGrounds", which were easier to set up, but not nearly as fun... level 40, which was a major accomplishment that could take monthes to a year became something people could do in a day.. they removed Military Ranks, and their are only a few players left who still have one...

and then at the release of Cat all remenants we had of Vanilla (which was when the game was at its best) werre wiped out, it was no longer the game we all fell in love with... this is why WoW Subscriptions are falling like Dominos atm..

I mean, WoW has in all Honesty turned into a Pokemon rip-off at this point with the new "Pet Combat".. (I have nothing against Pokemon, I actually enjoy the games, but If I want to play Pokemon, I'll play Pokemon)

anyways, this is getting off topic...

I wonder if this Movie will be Live Action or pure CGI...

Why the hell would the gameplay elements removed from Cataclysm affect whether you'd watch a movie set post-Cata anyway?

Not that they would anyway. If anything they'd probably set it post-WC3 and pre-WoW.

just from Principle... same reason I won't buy Fries from McDonalds after a chicken-burger i ate there gave me food poisoning.. I am a man of my Principles haha...

But yeah, post-WC3 pre-WoW does seem like the best option to me...

even if it is from the Alliance perspective, I think we have to get Thrall and maybe Sylvanas in there somewhere..

They destroyed Azeroth in Cataclysm, taking along all of the things I liked about Warcraft with it.
