Warhammer 40K - Dawn of War II

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 9:24 am

I recently purchased Warhammer 40k - Dawn of War II with the expansion "Chaos Rising", because of Steam deal. Right now, I'm really liking the game. I can already play against hard computers, but it would appear no players are really online. Either the game is dead, or the vast majority has moved to the newest expansion "Retribution".

I was wondering if anyone on the forums has this game, and if so, are they willing to play it with other forumers?

Also, is the "Reitribution" expansion any good, and does it have more people playing it? It seems fairly pricey, even for on sale, but if it is good I might as well buy it while it is on sale.

Also, discuss anything Dawn of War here.

I wasn't even sure that those would show up, or if they are needed. But I was completely unsure as to whether or not they would show up. So I added them.

Damned monkeys.

I have DoW but it's a retail copy and it's not on Steam. It's a good game but I don't play a lot of RTS games (I svck at them)

I'm an Age of Empires, Warcraft and Starcraft fan really, when I first got this game I wasn't sure what the hell was going on. It's an RTS in a sense but seems to require more attention to individual units as opposed to just massing an army and attack-moving it to the enemy base. And I like it.

I love the game, but I prefer to think of it as a Tactical RTS.

Some may not agree but Dawn of War 2 is terrible compared to the first one. I suggest you get a copy and at least the dark crusade expansion. The first one was epic when you increase the unit limit. Especially with the orcs. Once they get going there is no stopping them. Luckily I always use artillery to mow them down before their numbers get to high.

Right now I've been using Tyranids (or whatever they are called. Zerg-like critters) and it seems that just going straight up melee is devastating. A horde of the basic weak melee infantry as fodder, then have a few ravener and warrior broods for real damage and pretty much all enemies will drop quick. Have trouble against huge Space Marine tanks though.

Still looking for an answer on the Retribution expansion.

I wish they were in the first one. But the choice of races was not bad at all if you had all the expansions.

Space Marines
Chaos Marines
Eldar
Dark Eldar
Orcs
Tau
Necrons (They cheat)
Sisters of Battle
Imperial Guard (My Favorite)

What made the first so good was mass destruction on a huge scale. With 1 mod there can be 200+ orcs attacking 80+ space Marines. The second was good but a RTS should have at least 40 units per player. It would be cool to combine them. Have advance units sent in for game play like 2 then become a full battle like 1.

Damn. In DoW 2 with just one expansion there are only five races.

Space Marines.
Chaos Marines.
Orks.
Eldar.
Tyranids.

I think the newest expansion adds Imperial Guard.

Retribution is fun the first time round. There are something like 6 races and a campaign for each race. However to get excited over that will lead to dissapointment, the campaigns are nearly identical, the only thing that changes is your motivation in each mission. Its better to think of it as 1 campaign but with the choice of what race to play as. A second playthrough quickly becomes repetitive. Don't buy this game thinking you are getting more than 1 campaign.
However like I said at the start it is fun the first time. If you enjoyed Dawn of War 2 you will enjoy this, it is more of the same with some nice additions.
oh and Imperial Guard are superb in Retribution, I loved seeing the enemy get cut down by a tangled web of laser beams or getting crushed by a Baneblade tank.

I believe there were that many for the 8 player maps. But that many units on one map would be crazy. I have done 4 player games and even that is to much for the 8 player maps.

The first one is not a bad price considering you get 4 full games. If you prefer regular RTS it might be better than buying an update for 2.

Do people actually play online in Retribution? Does DoW 2 have any competitive aspect to it?

I remember one of my friends actually did the war game thing with Warhammer 40k, with the miniatures. That is what actually led me to buy this game. It looked fun, he took me to one of the conventions they have and there were like 5 games going on at a time and probably 80 or so people watching and waiting for their game in the tournament. I played a little with my friend and his team afterwards, all the rules were confusing, but still, was fun. He wanted me to get involved in it, but those figurines used were expensive so I had to decline. He had like 300 dollars or so worth of Imperial Guard stuff.

With Warhammer you can have 300 invested in just the rule books. Really cant play with out them because there are millions of rules per race. So I will stick with Dawn of War. Gives a good taste of each race along with decent history.

Yeah I tried watching a how-to on the war game version, and basically...
