Warrior forced to use magic or bows?

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 5:10 pm

From what I understand dragons land once they take enough damage but in order to get one to land you need to use ranged attacks.Right? I was worried how this will effect my roleplaying warrior who won't use bows or magic. Will I be forced out of roleplay in order to get a dragon to land?

Shout vulgar insults about the dragons mother until he tries to land and eat you?

Also, they said the Dragon will land after it takes enough skyward damage, as it can not fly anymore. That doesn't mean it won't land prior to taking skyward damage, just that once it does take a bunch it will.

Dragon Shouts, bring a companion archer with you, taunt it by running underneath it, then under cover, to make it follow you, etc.

Where there's a will, there's a way. That's the joy of TES. :D

Dragon shouts have cool downs so I can't spam them and companions can "faint" in battle. I'll try the cat and mouse trick though :hubbahubba:

They swoop down low enough for you to hit them in passing, and you can shout at them to knock them out of the air. I'm sure dragons will also land and attack you at random points.

Edit: dragons do land randomly to attack you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR3mlo02d0w&feature=related at about 55 seconds in.

Yeah I was wondering this too. I want a two handed heavy Nord but I feel forced to take up archery just cause I have to have SOME of sort of ranged attacks.

In that link the archer shoots the dragon right before he lands.

How do jump attacks work? Pretty sure in Oblivion you needed to be an apprentice or journeyman in acrobatics to swing a blade mid-air, but they got rid of that skill I believe. Maybe wait for a swooping dragon attack, dodge/jump and hack at his underbelly. Sounds pretty epic compared to shooting some arrows at it.

You mean sneak up on a sleeping dragon? I don't know it's been a while since I read the Hobbit, back in 05 I believe. ANYWAY, I think you have to jump and swing wildly if you're a warrior. But if you're a solo warrior and isn't in roleplay to use the shouts... non lo so :sadvaultboy:

1. it looks like he missed
2. the dragon wasn't 'knocked out of the air'
3. even if 1 and 2 are incorrect, it seems having an archer companion would do just fine

If you want to have ranged attack, you must either use the bow or magic. If you don't want to use even the bow, then you run away.

Though this gimping of yourself is unrealistic. How else are you gonna kill flying creatures without archery or any form of ranged attack? You want them to politely land so that you can hit them? Asking for monsters to purposely fly down so that you can hit them is even more unrealistic.

Just take the archery skill.

One thing to remember is that not all Dragons will behave the same.

If you get one that won't come down, consider him smarter than your average prey. So adjust your tactics accordingly. :)

I don't think it's too far of line to have a warrior shoot a bow. It's not like there were never enemies up on a ledge in previous games. I used a bow as my tank character in Oblivion.

I'm not asking him to fly down, I was asking if there was anyway to fight a dragon as a pure warrior but since people are saying there isn't I guess pure warriors are at a disadvantage to dragons. Most likely I will get an archer companion, I just hope they have some good endurance because if not I'm screwed. :flamethrower: :toughninja:

You're a pretty terrible warrior if you don't have some form of ranged offense. Being a warrior does not restrict you to to just melee range, even Conan who is often what people think of when they hear the word warrior was skilled in the use of bow.

So do a bit of roleplay and figure out how your character would fight a dragon. I think a melee only character finding a way to take down a dragon is way more badass than an archer who has to shoot the dragon 100+ times.

I don't know, I feel that kind of warrior is more of a dummy. No offense to the OP.
Unless you are roleplaying a warrior who follows an ancient warrior code that strictly forbids the use of ranged weapons, ahhh what the heck, just pick up archery.

Based on the few threads I read, the dragon may swoop down to try and hit you with its claws. Maybe that's when you slash it.

There may also be the possibility of sneaking up on a dragon when it lands for whatever reason, but this method is unconfirmed.

You won't use ranged attacks, surely you will use sneak?

Yes he will be a dummy. Maybe warrior was the wrong word, more like barbarian or caveman. Doesn't know how to use a bow but knows how to smash things.

Yes, you can slash at a dragon when it swoops down, I believe it was in the trailer or demo? Not sure, but I would say its basically confirmed. The dragon likely won't just sit up there in the sky and shout at you, it wants to kill you fast, and it has big, nasty claws to help with that.
