I was terrified reading so bad things about PC version

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 11:46 am

Hi
Last night I was waiting for Steam to unlock my Skyrim preload at 1:00 AM in Europe. A few hours before I started reading post in this forums with the first PC impressions. All of them was bad, horrible, the worst PC game ever. Textures from 2004, mouse not working, the sky falling over our heads.
So when I was about to start my first Skyrim game I was terrified. I had a long list of initial tweaks and solutions to apply to my copy. But I decided risking my life running the vanilla game. My hands were shaking, my cat was shivering under my bed, the wind was howling outside my window. I was alone in the night.
So... I run the game. Everything set at very high. Default FOV. Default VSync. Was I a mad person?
The game started. The initial scene I had seen in many videos. I surprised myself looking at every texture, every tree, the wood, the sky, the driver, the others prisioners... Wow, is that so bad? I asked myself. I was looking at one of the best good looking games ever. The graphics are awesome. The ultra textures are impressive. The world is alive. The weather is shivering. The reviews are not wrong. It's one of the best games ever.
The texture problem was a punctual problem of people with very high end hardware (maybe bad drivers). The worst of all is the menu. It's hard for a PC player to get used to it. There are a lot of trolls saying even that the faces are horrible and couldn't continue playing.
Just play. I was impressed. Everything set at max. No problem. No fps drop. No flying mamuts.
Play and enjoy. Best game I've ever played. A thousand reviews can't be wrong, neither the elder scrolls :)

well this is typical of the forums just before and the days after releases.

the majority of people on right now will be trolls, who will rage about any and every thing. while the people who are giving the game a chance are not on because they are playing the game.

so thats why you'll see more negative posts than positive. although i have seen a few of the fan boy van guards floating around pumping up skyrim.

That is because people are overly dramatic about the simplist elements.

There are a lot of people that have been looking forward to this game, and when their nerdgasms haven't been fulfilled, they flock here for the world to hear.

What's that? Oh you say Bethseda is just giving PC gamers the finger? Yeah, how dare you Bethseda for making such a bad game for 5 years.

Same here, I played my first couple of hours after midnight, expecting a real mess thanks to all the bad reports but the reality was quite different. Firstly it just worked, without any tweaks and didn't crash either. I got used to the menu system and mouse control within the first few minutes and from there on in I was trying to force myself to turn it off and go to bed - almost two hours later I finally managed it. Sure it could have a better PC GUI put it doesn't and probably won't until someone brings out a mod for it but as for it being unplayable - utter nonsense.

I'm not quite sure most of you know what a "troll" is...Genuine complaints/expressions of displeasure, as trivial as they may seem, are not being voiced simply on inflammatory grounds. These people aren't baiting you just because they happen to disagree with your line of thinking. Sorry to be pedantic here, but seriously, these buzz words are killing me.

It's not a case of trolling. There are bugs that make things look horrible sometimes. Seems like a MipMap missplacement that foces the lower mipmaps sometimes. Most of time things are ok, but soemtimes the textures don not scale up when you get closer and you might end with things textured looking like a 1998 game.

The default option of 360 controller on a PC was dumb, simple as that. So dumb that is impossible somethign liek that woudl be made on purpose, what leads people to conclude that the game was not properly tested on PC.

The game is not a failure as some claim, But it wil REALLLY need some patches. Also on my opinion, yes the game has lost a lot due to consolization issues, will not discuss what to avoid forum warfare, but I am indeed disapointed with that as a whoel in the industry.

For all that...the game is anything but broken, but I still had texture pop-ins and issues with enemy actors becoming transparent, as well as odd lag, but only in the tutorial. So while I'm not seeing any issues at the moment, I would disagree that there are 'no problems'.

But I suppose that makes me a troll.

i have been some one who has highly been critical of skyrim, and at one point swore not to buy it... an oath i broke but thats not here or there... but the reason why i say the majority (and perhaps that too strong because there are alot of people who are looking for answers to technical issues) of people who are on will be trolls is because they are here on the forums to make a dramatic point about something they can't really have an unbiased exepert opinion on, for the reason that they are not playing the game.

its similar to the saying "the less you talk the more you hear, conversly, the more you talk the less you hear"

i am not specificly calling any one out or devalueing any opinions, nor suggesting the quoted above was suggesting i was

m'k, i think i covered my bases :P

Many of the glitches/small problems people are posting about are undeniably there. They don't bother me much either, though. I'm really enjoying all the new stuff in this game and the incredible atmosphere.

I have not played much, just the start of the game up til character creation. Can't wait to continue playing after i get home from this lecture. The graphics looks grea, not the best i have seen, but it looks amazing. The distant view is just amazing, the only thing that botheres me is i had some framerate issues that did not seem to be affected by graphics options. As turning off lots of graphical options improved the framerate just slightly, it jumps from a steady 40-50 to around 23 framerate, and it seems my cpu is not used as much as it should, as it never goes above 65% usage. Don't think it will be gamebreaking, but i hope some patches comes with some optimization, and i hope they will not be slow with this.

Same here, I was afraid of the UI but the favorites system works great. Just hold Q and select with right or left mouse. It even remembers what you used last so if you just equip a sword it'll equip a shield too.

Wow, you really gave me hope. I have a dual-core 2.3ghz, 8gigs of ram and Geforce 540m and I was scared to death that I will have to run it on the lowest settings.

So the mouse UI control is established to be having certain... well ,shortcomings. But what I want to know now while I have 10 mins left of the install (even though I installed it from disc, wtf) is, how is the actual character control with mouse, while moving and fighting?

Careful about pointing flaws in the game, your thread might get locked down...... Oh wait, you said you like the game, so they'll let it go.

My god. Do you listen to anything anyone tells you? How old are you? The reason it got locked is because of how you bring up and go about arguing your points. If you weren't ignoring what you've been told already, you would have already acknowledged that this post is exactly why it was locked. You are the one who needs to let it go.

So I should express my displeasure in a positive way while not making the game look bad in any way? That's a pretty hard thing to do.

No, you should express your displeasure by not acting like a child, and have an open-minded discussion. If it's hard for you to do, don't do it.

While this is true there have been quite a few individuals who not only posted a thread of their own to complain but also went to the threads of others who had positive reviews to complain in those positive threads about issues in no way related to what the OP was expressing, and would do this multiple multiple times... and oh god for the amount of PC tech problems being posted in this forum and not the tech forum... but I digress, I know it will only really be an issue on here for a few days.

Giving negative comments it not = to acting like a child, you're just a fan-boy who won't accept that this is in-fact a console port.

Lol,

I'm not a devoted fan. I haven't even played this game. What I'm devoted to is rational thinking and discussion. Accordingly, complaining about the game on and on, disrespectfully I might add, and then complaining on and on about the thread being locked (and derailing other threads) is acting like a child.

Eh. A few bugs, but nothing game breaking. I had utter fun and enjoyment playing it last night, and genuinely lol'd at some things and was sad at others (in a good way). There was one bug I laughed at though. When you go to Riverwood there's a woman going "I saw a dragon zomg", and I heard her say it but couldn't see where she was, and then I noticed she was all the way on top of her house for some reason, half clipped into the roof, and Sven was talking to her like everything was normal. Then she just sort of teleported to the right place. Thought it was funny that one of the most iconic bits from the previews was a complete mess.

But stuff like this doesn't really detract from my enjoyment of the game.

I only mentioned the locked thread so that people who point out flaws know what's waiting for them. I haven't been disrespectful in any way, I'm just giving facts about the sad state of the game.
