We're watching you... (driver) scum!

I think I can safely assume that we've all had bad experiences with reckless drivers. I myself used to feel uncomfortable driving for the first year I drove not because of my own skills but because apparently everyone else had forgotten about any and all rules. I don't mind the minor rules being forgotten but when people forget what red lights mean, stop signs mean, who has priority on which lanes in roundabouts and what those signs with dual digit numbers on them mean then it can get pretty scary. I've never been in an accident myself but every single time I've been close to being in one it has been due to the other driver driving recklessly speeding past stop signs with no care what's around the corner, or people who are changing lanes in roundabouts like underwear or ignoring out of roundabout entering priority for the outer lane. (Keep in mind I'm drawing examples from how the rules are where I am, rules can differ between countries.)

The worst part of it all however is how utterly powerless you are as a fellow civilians to make demands that reckless drivers drive more safely or quit driving all together. But what if in an effort to promote safer driving the common person could have a system installed in their cars that would monitor the environment quite precisely, and that if you recorded someone violating the laws seriously then you could report them to whichever authority would otherwise pass judgement on that kind of driving if they themselves were present where you had been.

In short, would you be for or against other drivers being able to monitor and report your own driving, while being able to do so yourself? Assuming there are no technical difficulties (people always need to nitpick with arguments such as "wouldn't be possible with modern technology k,thx,bye..." which just derails from the real argument) and that the user himself would be the only one who could turn the system on or off (so you could go wherever you pleased without your own system spying on you) then is this something you would want or not? And if possible, why or why not?

I myself would not mind this as I've had plenty of times where bad drivers have been very close to ramming into me on their fault and in the few years I've been driving I have still never broken any rule nor in general made driving dangerous for anyone else, so assuming there would be proper rules to keep people from abusing the system, (again I'm betting someone will take that up as an argument "what if someone just reports everyone he or she sees?" Well then there would be rules to prevent that =.=, at leas ideally) then I'd be fine with it.

Totally fine with it. Don't see privacy as being (too much) of a concern.

No, because there are people who would abuse the system to get people they don't like in trouble, or just waste their time by reporting them so they have to clear their name. If it was anonymous there wouldn't really be a way to see who was reporting who and everyone would just be reporting people who took their parking space or overtook them on the highway. If it wasn't anonymous then if the records became compromised bad people could go for revenge on anyone who reported them.
There is a reason people train to be police, and it's not just to learn how to handle a gun.

Humanity is dumber than a box of raisins, and I don't really see how adding another phone number would alleviate the problem.

Having been involved in a couple of crashes thanks to the idiocy of other drivers my inclination is to say "yeah, great idea"... but you know it'll be misused, and the presumption of innocence an important thing to me, as frustrating as it is at times. Add insurance companies to an already potentially problematic scheme and you have something that'll be quite toxic, so I guess my answer has to be no.

Actually, if we actually gave teeth to this thing, then no, I wouldn't support it. Involving insurance and such would quickly make it a broken system. I guess I'm just waiting for the day when computers can drive cars.

If I could justify the expense(/be bothered with the effort :hehe:), I would fit a video camera to the back of my bike (possibly the front as well). Tailgating a motorcycle greatly increases the hazard for the rider, can be very distracting (which, perhaps ironically, can result in a drop in speed), and is generally a Bad Thing To Do. I would then see if such footage would be enough to get cops interested in sending out an unpleasant surprise... :meh:

Spoiler
I figure that if I can give them a video which shows the car's registration, the dangerously illegal activity, and (window-tint permitting) the driver's face, that should make for a fairly solid case that shouldn't take much work on their part, and I imagine they're not keen on people who increase the chances of them getting called out to see mashed up motorcyclist .

But I wouldn't support a systemic thing. There would be too many ways for it to go to [censored] (as others have pointed out) and there's an unpleasant probability that it would end up svcking down a ton of money before it imploded.
