So, you ask Serana to marry you, she says no because temples terrify her etc. Then, two weeks later in-game, she stops you and reminds you that you asked her to marry you, saying she feels you deserve an explanation for her refusal.
Serana explains that her soul still belongs to Molag Bal, and that if she ggave herself to the Dovakiin completely, MB would use that to torment her for the rest of eternity after her death, or that MB may even send his agents to kill the Dovakiin so his hold over Serana is no longer threatened. The Dovahkiin then asks if there's a way to free her from MB's grasp, and She says there may be a way. Molag Bal is the Lord of Domination, so he would only give a worthy prize such as a soul to one who can match his will, but that can only be done in his realm, and to get there they need Velorica's help, but she is not speaking to Serana since she gave up her immortality.
The Dovahkiin asks if there's a way to soften Velorica up, and Serana mentions an artifact of some kind that necromancers have been looking for in Skyrim for centuries, one that her mother had almost succeeded in finding before Harkon found the prophecy. So, with that in mind, the duo sets out to get said artifact, and upon finding it, go to Velorica and present her with it (Perhaps it could be called the the "Souls Eye" and allows a necromancer to find and take souls from the Soul Cairn without having to deal with the Ideal Masters).
Velorica, realising that Serana's choice must mean far more to her than she ever realised, if she was willing to sacrifice her newfound mortality to get this for her, reluctantly accepts Serana as her daughter once more, and even offers to help them enter Molag Bal's domain.
The ritual can take another two weeks in game to be prepared, and the Dovahkiin gets a letter saying Velorica is ready, so they go back to her and begin the ritual.
Upon entering Coldharbour, Molag Bal demands to know why they would dare tresspass, before recognising Serana, and immediately seeing she has given up her vampirism. The Dovahkiin demands that Molag Bal release her soul so she can enter Sovengarde with him when she dies, and of course MB refuses, asking why he would ever give up such a prize. The Dovahkiin then challenges MB himself to a battle of wills, to which MB refuses and demands a test of strength, and appears before the Dovahkiin in the form of a lesser Avatar, using "Just enough power to crush the so-called 'mighty Dovahkiin'"
The battle commences, and upon emerging victorious, MB says he is impressed with the Dovahkiin's power, so much so that he agrees to release Serana's soul, but warns the Dovahkiin that if he ever shows the slightest hint of weakness, that he will be there waiting.
Upon returning to the mortal plane, Velorica expresses her admiration for both her daughter and the Dovahkiin, and gives her blessing for them to marry. After that they seek out Maramal, and Velorica even shows up to the wedding, but she is wearing a blindfold and using a walking stick to pretend she is blind so that people cannot see her vampiric eyes.
