Way too many currencies in MMOs these days.

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 12:13 pm

Some games have 10 different currencies or more. Not only does this pull me away from any immersion, it is confusing as hell sometimes. Gold, Zen, Crystals, PvP tokens, God coins, Seals, Arrows, Thief tokens, Iron chips, yada yada yada... It is just crazy.

What happened to the good old days where gold was the main way to pay for everything? What is this crazy need for MMOs to use a different kind of payment for every little thing?

On top of that, a lot of it has exchange rates, so 10 gold =500 cyrstals = 1 Zen = 50 pvp tokens = 2 god tokens...... It has gotten to the point you need a real accountant just to see what your character is worth.

Please ZOS, keep the monetary system simple just like all TES games.

Thank you.

I did not know that arrows are a currency. But. Well, sadly, you don't have to worry about them in ESO

They should have the monetary system be identical across the game but name the currencies something else depending on what faction picks em up(lets just assume magical and fair exchange rates happen because it isn't exactly fun or interesting to do conversion ratios mid game).
Idk, i want the representation of varied currencies in the game but at the same time I don't want it to be a tedious thing to do.

Multiple currencies exist for a couple reasons, the most pressing of which is because of gold farmers.

The tokens might not be so prevalent since we do not have major streams of gear divided into pvp and pve. Gear is said to be the same and it is how it is modified by crafters that make it customized. That should reduce some of the tokens.

I believe your right, "gold" is usually the only currency used for stuff you can trade directly with other players, (and that is tradable with other players). All the others are non-tradable and are used to purchase things that are non-tradable so that god farmers cannot sell these things.

However as a way of discouraging gold selling I think this svcks. It devalues crafting and side-lines the economy because you cannot buy the stuff worth having with “gold”. I much prefer a game where I can chose to be an expert at crafting one thing and trade to get the other stuff I need, it is annoying and unrealistic to have to be capable of a whole range of things because you cannot trade for them.

They can call it whatever they want, even have different names for the coins in each faction, but I hope they keep the "exchange rate" the same; old example 10 silver = 1 gold, etc. I don't want to be playing an online banking rpg.

It is common to introduce new currencies as the game economy evolves, its pretty bad design but so far so it "works" for many games. Also players will eventually translate other collectables into currency, rare scrolls, crafting materials, typically ultra high rarity endgame materials, but whatever works.

I'm not sure you can say it's a "bad design" and "it works" in the same line of thought. :)

I'm used to 2 currencies. The gold and PvP credit for PvP gear. Frankly, I never saw a reason to have gear specifically for PvP. So, I guess I don't see a reason for PvP credit.

I'm happy with in game gold and then maybe pvp currency/alliance points , more than that is silly , atm I'm playing Neverwinter and that has several forms of in game currencies such as ~ Gold , Astral diamonds , Zen , Ardent coins , celestial coins and last but not least Glory , thats a bit too much lol....

It's bad design because the economy itself is out of control, so you need bruteforce methods ( adding higher tier currencies into the game world/breaking lore). It works, because most people are "meh, fine about it". Works here means = noone really bothers to make it better, bit of irony intended, hence the quotation marks.

I do actually agree with you OP, I very much prefer where there is just one currency like in the real world. Tibia, SWTOR and a few others had it and it was so much nicer to see an exact amount of coin that was valid for every part of the game. Maybe have two different stages like a cent and a dollar, but I'd much prefer one stage like SWTOR had credits. Make pvp reward you win coin instead of having to farm for gold to buy good pvp gear like vanilla wow did.

What do you mean like the real world? Have you not seen the sheer number of not only different currencies but different types of currencies?

Does the fact that this actually makes me laugh make me deeply immature?

the guys driving that rover-thingy should be 'mature' and rather intelligent, so laughing about it can't be that wrong, can it?

maybe Corp Circles are nothing but the private parts of some strange alien...

Back to the poll:

voted "Yes, the more the better."

well gold as an universal currency should be accepted by any common trades person.

but... why on earth should (e.g.) some ashlander (who has no connection to the empire) take gold coins from you? - gold should be 100% worthless for them

then there should be some rich NPCs that are collecting ancient or rare artifacts (e.g. Dwemer, Daedric) - it just would feel cool to get some very valuable weapons from their collection in return for a sack full of rare knick-knack

of course it shouldn't end up like GW2 where you get yet another silly currency for each dungeon

No it means you are normal. I laughed for a good 20 minutes after seeing it and making more and more connections of what it is suggesting. I mean the start of the Mars Art Program is that. That is just friggin great.

People complain about multiple currencies but forget why they are there.

If you could pay for everything with gold that means that gold is really important, that means a much greater flood of Gold-farmers and Bots which destroy the game economy. People can just goldfarmer to get everything (Pay to Win). There MUST be non-tradable currencies in an MMORPG.

TL;DR: Gold for everything = Gold farmers = Pay to Win

There are much better ways to stop gold farming.

in my experience there has been no good way to prevent it yet. if the game is really popular there will be gold farmers no matter what we do

as for the topic, i am happy with the standard 3(or 4) forms of currency of copper/silver/gold(platinum). having 3 forms of the essentially same currency just helps with the numbers and prevents huge numbers of gold. i for one have never been very fond of additional forms of currency as once you got what you want the rest becomes worthless. at the same time i understand that different cultures may have their own forms of currency but that would not make much sense to me in TESO

I assume you're talking about having tokens etc that are needed to get some types of armour? If so, I have nothing against that. If everything works on the same currency, then there's no incentive to do anything but the most efficient method of making money.

I'm personally hoping that different factions will have separate currencies, so when you go into a new faction at 50+ you can't just buy out everything with the vast riches you've already gained.

If you mean the gold/silver/copper thing then yeah, it's kinda pointless but I don't really care either way.

Stopping gold farmers is actually a lot easier than most people suspect.

1) Don't have free trails.

2) No trading or outgoing mail until 15th level.

3) Have a spam mailbox tab. Have the option to set who goes in that tab, like anyone I am not friends with or in my guild.

4) /ignore should work on accounts not just a character.

5) If 50 people click on a tell you have sent, you get instantly banned. This really can not get abused. You would have to send 50 different tells to people and they all report you, for this to go in effect, so it would only effect gold sellers.

These 5 things stop 99% of gold sellers. I have seen it work.
