Weak sales?

Post » Fri Oct 12, 2012 6:41 pm

11,831 peak players for today on Steam, you gotta be kidding me. Either Bethesda didn't advertise this game properly or the gamers of today don't care about the old stealth gameplay... otherwise we have new IP, fresh gameplay (compared to most of today's top games), very good reviews so far.. so what's wrong? If half the people who bought Skyrim buy Dishonored, they get golden ROI.

Is this game a Steam exclusive, I mean all the pc players must run it on Steam?

I am gonna guess quite a few people are playing offline, and there are quite a few playing on consoles.
However this IS an underdog game, many people have underestimated it, I even met some people who first heard of the game yesterday or this past week.
There hasn't been alot of advertising about the game, especially in Europe, plus it's a new IP that is unlike much else but builds upon previous games.
Darksiders faced the same situation, it still did quite well after a while ;)

Well it's a new IP, it's rare they ever get a Collector's edition sadly.
honestly though, Dishonored could have had the most awesome Collector's edition ever

The Steam stat page is a bit interesting, yeah. http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

I was thinking about this a bit last evening. I've been a moderator here for quite some time now, thru numerous game launches, and despite not seeing this as a "forum heavy" game and didn't expect much forum activity, the relatively small launch activity here surprised me.

Is this game a Steam exclusive, I mean all the pc players must run it on Steam?
Yep.

Darksiders faced the same situation, it still did quite well after a while
Yeah, I think word-of-mouth will help this game a fair deal eventually. It would be a shame if it didn't. Or maybe the general gamers don't want to pay full price for a new IP, and just wait for it to get cheaper, or they are put out by the silly "OMG only 4 hours long!?" nonsense. Who knows?

Well, it's not even been released in Europe yet
That is true :) Maybe Europeans in general are more into this kind of gameplay, but I would guess they are more of the same.

When I picked my copy up from Gamestop, I talked with the guy briefly about whether people were coming in to pick up copies, a boots on the ground assessment. It was early in the afternoon and raining so that impacted some. Still, there were 40 preorders at my store. That's like two-thirds of what you could reasonably expect for something like GTA at one store. When official numbers come out, I think it'll be a pleasant surprise.

Could also be that many are using Offline mod so not part of the stats ! -- Figure any game that I don't have to be logged into Steam to play gets played offline !

The game isn't out everywhere yet. If hasn't picked up by tomorrow, that will be the time to worry.

I wouldn't say "time to worry" at all.

With an IP of this magnitude, even if it doesn't sell the 2-3 million copies it needs to break even, there will definitely be a second instalment, since that's where the real money is made.

Sadly, it's the genre, folks - although I love and love and love this game and all kinds of games like it, I also know there's a significant portion of the consumer base who just doesn't care for the subtleties of a slow-burn kind of gaming experience like this one, where you are hard-pressed not to take your time, to go deep, to play the way the game naturally lends itself to being played. Too many (imho) gamers today just don't have the patience for that. I've got my 14-year-old son playing this game on his console (he gets his own so I don't have to share LOL) and he seems to really enjoy it, but only for awhile before switching back to one of his fast-paced action games or a racing game. Dishonored is my kind of game all the way; it's everything that was promised and more and I really hope there's more to come despite this game not having the mass-appeal (shudder) of games like COD : _____.

Game isnt even released lol.

Also Ill take a guess here. Alot of people spent their money on Diablo 3. Calling D3 an average game would be a compliment, creating suspicion amongst gamers and probably causing a rather paranoid outlook for gamers considering reviews and marketing cannot be trusted at all anymore. Then Guild Wars 2 came out. For being a gamer for 20 years I have to say that the release timing for dishonored is pretty bad.

I have no doubts Dishonored will sell well though. Keep in mind that the game cant be bought in europe for another 48 hours.

It did come out at a risky time since it does have XCOM and RE6 overshadowing it somewhat. It was #3 on Steam pre-orders if I recall, so I estimate Dishonored to be a moderate success.

I don't agree with this at all. Underperforming new IPs get left out to dry all the time. Bulletstorm being the biggest recent example.

Which is not to say this is underperforming. We don't know yet. But if it does, it's bad, bad news for this kind of game.

Its a new IP and it will likely be pirated as hell. News got out that the game is relevantly short so most people wont buy it.

please, PLEASE do the favour and read up properly would you?
The game is NOT short!!!! YES you can complete it in 4-6 hours and get absolutely nothing out of it,
but it is MEANT to be played out to 20+ hours! If you call that short, well, then I would get censored for what I would write.
And sure it will get pirated, but any game everywhere gets pirated, even Darksiders, but that game, as I said earlier, still did well.

People hearing about this game being short, probably even don't know what the genre is or the story of the game.

Perhaps you're not reading properly.. I said "News got out.." were does this imply that my opinion is the same? I simply pointed out that that's the word that got out there.

I was expecting more forum/steam activity as well, but the fact that there's 3 days between the US and Europe release will have something to do with it. Who knows how big the European market for this game is. Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the French and German fans are probably posting on their own forums rather than in here.

It's also not a multiplayer title (no need to be online) or a game like Skyrim that many people will just play for hours and hours at a time.

I do hope the game sells well, I would love to see Arkane continue developing games like this. They are way too rare.

And I'm not sure what the peak 'today' means. The peak of October 11th? While it's in the evening here in Europe, it's not in America. The game isn't out here for most countries, so obviously it's not going to be played much here, and people in America may be at school/work at this time. To really see how many players are playing this game you would have to check a time where the game is available across the whole world, and where most people have time to play. This weekend for instance.

You also have to remember that a lot of people (like me) have picked this up for PS3 or Xbox. Not everyone is a PC gamer, so when you combine sales from all systems, I'm sure the numbers will be great.

It also has the problem of getting strong critical response and huge fan reaction, but a mixed reaction from the unwashed gaming masses, so to speak. It's a boutique game, and it delivers to fans of its style 100%, but a lot of people are totally bewildered by it. I HOPE the overall word of mouth amongst the less hardcoe is good, but it's hard to tell because those aren't the people who are logging on to messageboards and Metacritic.

I've played the first two missions and I'm very excited. Has a great Thief vibe. I'd be sad if it doesn't sell well, because I want this IP to become a long series.
