[RELz] Weathered Road Signs

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 11:59 am

I'm pretty happy with how v1.1 turned out. The city signs look nice and grungy, the sign post looks like its seen better days and the village signs have a little bit of dirt and some discoloring from the nails. Also a few birds used the signs for target practice. :whistling:

Enjoy!

Those signs do not look weathered to me compared to vanilla, if anything they look brand new. Perhaps this mod should be called easy to read signs rather than weathered signs?

It appears that it is the OPs first mod and I'm sure they are open to constructive criticism, however, I think that they're a great start, tastefully weathered and a wonderful edition to the game.

Very good start you have there :foodndrink:, I agree though they are a little clean, throw on some dirt, fade the text a little in random places and maybe add some lighter areas here and there for some weathering effect and you're onto a winner

Then you don't know what wood looks like after it has been sitting out, untreated, for a number of years. The OP's wood now has a nice blackened look to it that tells me it's been there for awhile compared to the freshly cut boards you can clearly see on the bottom vanilla boards shown in the comparison shot. The signs just need some bird poop and a little mold and dirt here and there and the wood would look even nicer.

Also, don't confuse the painted lettering to tell the true age of a road sign. If you ever go hiking in the woods on maintained trails, you will find wood that has been there for 20 to 30 years but someone has come along over the years and touched up the lettering with fresh paint. Most of the roads in Skyrim are heavily traveled, this is obvious by the road conditions. I can clearly see some NPC, ordered by the Jaarl, touching up the painted letters from time to time.

OP, thanks. They need just a little more tweaking but I really like them compared to vanilla.

I quite like these signs but just as a heads-up: two textures are missing (roadsignssouthern01_left and roadsignsnorthern01_left).

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I'll grunge these signs up and post some screenshots when I have something suitably dirty.

Odd those two files don't seem to be in the same directory as the other road sign textures. Do you happen to know where they are? I've been fishing around in my textures.bsa file and I can't seem to find them. :shakehead:

I can't seem to find them either using the .bsa browser. I should have taken a look at the map so I could give better directions in-game of its use (the northern version I suspect was along the road between Markarth and Karthwasten). It was only one city-sign that showed the missing-purple-texture, second from the bottom. If all looks right in that area on your end though, it's probably a holdover from http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=436 which I had been using previously.

As for weathering the signs more... Bethseda's signposts seem to have "newer" boards nailed to the bottom of the signpost (Riverwood, Ivarsted and Helgen in the comparison shot) as those settlements grew to a size deserving of notation. The paint is fresh compared to the capital city signs on which the paint has almost faded to nothing, and the large nails at top and bottom indicate a later addition from when the signpost was constructed. Those same capital signs have carved lettering which is prominent (due to paint loss via weathering) whereas the podunk towns like Riverwood aren't worthy of such expense-- they literally get a painted board.

Specifically with regards to the paint/font on your signposts, I think you've done well. The letters are not uniform (some are more intact than others, it mirrors Bethseda's nicely) which, given the elemental exposure, is entirely appropriate. I'm looking forward to seeing the next iteration!

I've got to stop tweaking these textures. I'll never get to play at this rate. Anyway let me know what you guys think.

It looks quite a bit different from v1.0 but its also much closer to what I originally had in mind.
