Well this is new. I got a doggie companion

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 8:56 am

Went to Riften in my current game and got a doggie companion I think. In a previous game I seen him in Riverwood and he went away after I said something to him. So this time I didn't say anything and the Stray Dog is walking by me. So what can he do? How long will he stay with me? I like the idea I have a pet.

If I tell him to stay, how long does he stay there for? If I tell him to go home, does he leave for good then? I think this is what I did last time and never saw a dog after that.

So what can we do with the stray dog?

He'll follow you and help you fight until you tell him to leave.

Thank you. So no commands like in Fallout 3 to find ammo or food then eh?

I think I will keep him around. I hope he doesn't get himself killed. If he does, can we get another one later? Does this happen randomly?

Its a random encounter, if you dismiss him he'll hang about in the general area where you found him. There are a couple of other dog followers as well.

UESP-

Spoiler
Certain dogs can also be recruited as followers throughout the game. You can have at most one canine follower at any time. If your canine follower is left to wait for a long time, a message will appear that the dog has grown tired of waiting and they will start walking to their original location. Note: The "body box" of dog followers is larger than their appearance suggests, thus ranged attacks will sometimes hit a dog even though you have a visually clear path towards your target.
You can recruit the following canine followers:
?Barbas is the only quest-related canine follower in the game. He is the daedra companion of Clavicus Vile who takes the form of a dog, and can be found outside of Falkreath. He is invincible and will continue to follow and fight for you no matter where you bring him if you choose not to complete the related quest.
?Meeko can be found near a shack, where his previous owner has passed away.
?Stray Dogs may be found in random encounters in the wilderness, usually in combat with other hostile creatures.
?Vigilance is a war dog who can be purchased from Banning at the Markarth stables for 500 gold. If you dismiss him, he will return to Banning and you must pay the 500 gold again to get him back.

EDIT - just realised we're in general, added spoiler tags

The stray dog is random, but there are other dogs which are not random...and companions, not just dogs, are a bit lackluster compared even to Fallout 3. I do miss the in depth companions we had in New Vegas.

I like the idea I have a pet.
If you can ignore the constant barking and yapping, it might work for you.

Me, i told my first (and only) dog to go pound sand after about 10 minutes ...

I heard that if you tell him to leave that he will return to the place where you found him, but i am not sure.
You can also buy a dog near markarth i believe.
