Werewolf: Back to basics

Post » Tue Jun 18, 2013 12:15 pm

Welcome to Werewolf!

If you're new to Werewolf, it is a murder mystery we occasionally play here on the forum (with consent). It is similar to the party game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_(party_game), but we've added a RPG twist. The basic premise of the game is that some of the players are murderers (usually Werewolves) who try to kill all the innocent players before the innocents can figure out who the murderers are. Whichever team is eliminated first, loses.

If you'd like a brief primer on how to play, check out the http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l253/mr_e12345/werewolfprimer.jpg:

== Setting ==

Your once peaceful village has been nothing like it's usual self the past few days. People disappearing, livestock disappearing, items disappearing. Everything's disappearing, and even though your local Lord has investigated, he stated there is nothing to be done for all of you, and that your village is not worth having troops. All sorts of forgotten stories are resurfacing in the local tavern, quickly dismissed by most. One thing is certain: The wolf population in the nearby forest has been getting increasingly bold as more and more carcasses are found around town. Some of you think occasionally one of the howls almost sounds human..

This game takes place on Earth, in medieval times.

== Joining ==

If you want to join this game, please fill out this character profile. Try to be thorough, because I use them to generate the clues whenever a murder happens!

Name:

Age: Please stay within reasonable boundaries. (18-60ish)
Physical description: Height/weight/eyes/hair. Relative terms (ie: pudgy) are fine.
Clothing: What are you wearing right now? Include 1 or 2 colors.
Occupation: What does/did your character do for a living?
Hobbies: What does your character do in their spare time?

Possessions: Include 3 to 5 things that you might carry with you.
Personality: How does your character act? Include 3 to 5 traits.
History: Where does your character come from and why are they here? Please be concise and marginally detailed. 3 to 5 sentences is perfect.

You may also reserve a spot by saying so in this thread. Then fill out your character profile between now and the due time.

Note: I reserve the right to add details to your profile if I feel it is too generic, so I encourage creativity. There is a limit to how "creative" you should get. Things such as time-travel are obviously past the line of reasonable creativity.

Character profiles are due by: SUNDAY JUNE 23 at 11:59PM, http://www.timeanddate.com/library/abbreviations/timezones/eu/cest.html. The game shall start within 24 hours thereafter. The game will be capped at 30 players, and have a 16 player minimum.

Some basic rules for this game:

== Daily Procedure ==

The game day will run from approximately 22:00 CEST to exactly 20:00PM CEST – 22 hours.

Each day, players will exercise their abilities:

  • Everyone can vote on a SEARCH the group will perform.
  • Everyone can vote on a player to publicly EXECUTE.
  • Special roles can do their special actions.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: *Never* add a vote to an existing post through editing. Make a new post if you want to change your vote.

SEARCH: Each day, a choice will be presented to players as to which area they want to search the next day, and the area receiving the most votes will be chosen. Depending on the area, a different set of clues will be provided to players.

Please note: due to the nature of the SEARCH system, there will be a map for this game.

EXECUTE: Each day, the player receiving the most execution votes will be executed. At least 20% of players must vote for that person for the execution to occur. A double execution happens if 50% or more of players vote and the top two suspects are tied for votes. Triple executions won't happen, so don't bother! Tie votes with fewer than 50% of players voting will result in a random selection (1 in 3 chance for each of the players, 1 in 3 chance that neither will be executed)

POSTING: Underline your name. Italicize actions. Bold votes and questions to the host. OOC anything not in character, though try to stay in character.

QUESTIONS: Each day's write-up will contain as much information as would be quickly seen in the eyes of the characters. It is possible to have a more thorough look at some stuff if you want to know some more details. Just ask the question in character following the posting rules (bold questions!) and I'll give an answer, though not necessarily one you would want. Generally details pertaining to the area are included in the SEARCH mechanic.

This game will run over several days. Please make sure you have the time to participate actively as much as possible to make the game as enjoyable for yourself and others. Please allow the host (me!) to make the first two posts of any thread.

== Roles ==

Innocent: The basic role. Innocents have no special powers. Like everyone else, they can vote to determine the move for the night, vote to protect one person, and vote to execute one person suspected of being a wolf.

Angel (2): The Angel is a human that acts as a protector for the innocents. Each night, the Angel may PM the name of one person (other than himself) to the host to protect them against wolf attacks or conversions.

Sneak (1): The Sneak is an innocent turned detective, gathering information for their own use. Every night, the Sneak may PM the name of one person (other than himself) to the host to watch them during the night, seeing where their loyalties lie.

Arch-Wolf (1): The head of the pack, the top dog. The Arch-Wolf organizes and executes the hunt each night, and can PM freely with his fellow wolves. Each night, the Arch-Wolf will PM the host with the name of a player to be attacked. If the Arch-Wolf should be executed, the longest-serving wolf under him shall become the next Arch.

The Arch-wolf also possesses the means to recruit innocent players to the Werewolf side once every 3 nights (after 2nd day, after 5th day, after 8th day)

Wolf (1 if 18 players or fewer, 2 if 19 players or more): Wolves have been tainted by the dark side of nature. Each night, the wolf executes the orders of the Arch-Wolf. They can freely PM the Arch and any other wolves in order to plan and discuss future actions.

You are free to claim to have any role in the thread, whether it is the truth or a lie.

The game will end when the Wolf:Innocent ratio is 1:2!

== Final Thoughts ==

If something is unclear or conflicts arise with another player, let me know and I will address it. My inbox is always open. If I make a statement, it shall be accepted as fact. I'm lenient when it comes to roleplaying, and will allow it so long as it does not detract from the game (or attract the attention of moderators). Other than that, I just want to wish you all a good time.

Thanks to Mr. E for the general sign-up format.
If you believe there are any errors in any of my posts, please point them out. I'm only mostly human.

I have no idea what "epicmafia" adds to normal mafia, but to quickly describe Werewolf; it's Mafia with evidence in each day's writeup that will point you towards the "evil" people. It's slightly less random than Mafia.

EDIT: I am by no means an expert on Mafia though. Someone else might be able to explain it better.

Name: Jorundr the Old

Age: 57

Physical Description: (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1SyFT-5vWFM/T8Tc2zTIaqI/AAAAAAAACAc/nuA1bKUrSXY/s1600/diablo3-barbarian-best-coloring.jpg) 7.9 in height, almost 300 lbs, pale blue eyes, long grey hair and beard with shaved mustache. Muscular.

Clothing: Mix of brown animal hides and bits of armor.

Occupation: Barbarian

Hobbies: Drinking, fighting, having lots of unprotected six, and singing.

Possessions: A Greatsword, drinking horn, flute, and a bone necklace.

Personality: Easily angered, prone to violent outbursts, and few of words.

History: Jorundr hails from the far, unforgiving north. His lust for adventure and wealth have seen him across many different lands, and this village, with it's wolf problems, seemed like an interesting place to stop by for a bit of blood and coin. He is a man who's reckless and violent behaviors may in fact be the reason he has survived so long.

I'll reserve a spot.

I'll also note that while you did a fine job amending the signup (even the bit of snark on the searches, I see...) you left one artifact that no longer applies to your game, that being the last sentence under Executions (about low-voting ties).

@chrlat: It's similar, but quite different. This one has more RPG elements and much more GM involvement, more clue-based detective work rather than player-driven intuition and guesswork. It also happens on a smaller scale usually and has longer days to allow people to discuss and process the clues and potentially arrive at consensus.

There we go, I knew there was going to be something left in like that. Sorry for (almost) directly ripping your signup, but you know, not too much time on my hands today/tomorrow, but wanted to get this out there any way and it seemed like a good general form.

Correct. Just look at the 5 numbered links in the beginning of the opening post, and it should give you a pretty good idea. Also, your profile is fine and has been approved. If you could send me a PM (doesn't need to have anything in it) then that'd be great. EDIT: PM gotten. Thanks!

Dmel; your profile looks fine, but you refer to yourself as Daniel under Hobbies.

Gil’glar the Ironsmith

Age: 28

Physical Description: 6’ 2’’ tall; moderately built; green, beady eyes; short, black hair;

Clothing: A tidy, brown tunic underneath a black apron with leather boots to cover the feet.

Occupation: Blacksmith, town’s finest at that!

Hobbies: Gil has a penchant for building odd contraptions. He often wanders off to nearby caverns or on long stints away from the village to test his machines. These are usually designed to cut wood, mine “precious” rocks or simply to till the land. He does seldom build traps that could disembowel a boar or even a bear!

Possessions: Blacksmith’s hammer, a piece of chalk, an iron nail, an amulet studded with topaz (a gift from his parents)

Personality Traits: Imaginative, good-natured, self-reliant and competitive.

History: Even as a child Gil showed exceptional talent in designing and constructing several kinds of devices. His father gave him moral support and offered him materials from his workshop. However, their town was pillaged by marauders. They chanced upon this town after several days of hardship endured under a scorching, summer sun. Gil's father tutored him in the craft of a weapon-smith and gave him the tools of his current trade.

Yes. I will respond to all the PMs when the roles have been decided. The reason for sending me a PM is so the conversation is started; normally I believe there is a limit on the amount of conversations you can start within a certain amount of time. This is a problem when I have to send 20+ role PMs.
