Werewolf: In the Dark - Aftermath

Post » Wed Aug 15, 2012 11:35 pm

Extract from the journal of Madeleine Nixon, local print journalist.

13th August, 2012.

Suddenly, everything was perfectly clear. The killers had been right in front of us the whole time - Henry (Oranos), the powerful and reluctant strangler; with Daria (Rosveen), his more reserved accomplice. All of the blood and fear of the past nine days fell instantly into place, and we knew what we had to do. Henry broke away from the crowd and fled into the city, but we overwhelmed Daria almost immediately. She was completely surrounded by the group, who shared a singular and insatiable fury and brandished whatever they could find. We left her body and returned to the hall to gather everything we would need for our final witchhunt. The town of Lynchcaster isn't very big - there is nowhere for Henry to hide.

We've gathered our weapons, and now set off on our final hunt. Some of the innocents reported hearing mechanical noises from the hardware store, so we'll all start there and spread out across the town. Soon we'll all be safe.

Editor's note: This is the final entry contained in Madeleine Nixon's journal. Tragically her remains, along with those of eleven others, were discovered by government agents in the ruins of the local hardware store. The last of the fertilizer bombs used in the original attack have been implicated in the killing.

The remains have been declared unidentifiable for the time being, but it is thought that the alleged murderer, Henry Russell, was killed in the explosion. Our hearts go out to the families of those who will not return home. Those wishing to make a donation or provide any information are encouraged to contact the Lynchcaster Police Department.

Turn over for our tribute to journalist Madeleine Nixon. She died a hero, and will be sorely missed.

------------------------------------------

Henry took his eyes off the road for a moment to glance at the newspaper on the seat beside him, shaking his head sadly. It had been weeks since the explosion, but he knew that he'd need far more time than that to fully recover. Assuming he would ever recover at all. He pushed these thoughts aside as best he could, and focused instead on the stunning sunset which bloomed before him, bursting into life over the grasslands. He drove onward into endless potential, and every mile he drove put his past another mile behind him. Maybe if he drove fast enough he could just outrun it all.

In the back seat of the van, Nick (Frank the bunny) sat up and grinned. In his hands he held a thick folder, full of files. "Sure is lucky the gun shop stocked blanks, right? We can pick up the money as soon as we reach the airport, and there's more than enough for the two of us. More than enough for twenty men."

Henry allowed himself a small smile, and thought about the little farm he'd buy in the mountains.

Wolf victory!

And some awards! Lots of players had a good game, but here are a few who stuck out to me in particular.

The Hero Lynchcaster Needs: Awarded to slyme, for an outstanding last-minute case against Oranos which nailed pretty much all of the previous evidence against him, including deciphering the note.

Unlucky Bastard: Awarded to Rosveen, for successfully protecting Oranos on conversion night... after I'd already annulled his right to protection. Also for being lynched as a wolf right after being converted, despite a strong wolf game.

Angel Magnet: Awarded to Xetirox, for being protected pretty much every night, right up until he was killed.

Too Little, Too Late: Joint award for PartyPoison and hircine, for cracking the case against Frank... and then promptly being double-executed.

The Milkman [censored] Cometh: Awarded to Oranos for being the most influential innocent player in the game, and then for dominating as a wolf. He almost messed it up on the last day, but saved it with some impeccable timing. All-round best on field.

All-Star Wolf Pack: Awarded to the entire wolf team, since not a single one of them had a bad game. Frank played an especially good game, surviving for days despite torturing and stealing and generally being an unpleasant [censored] - bonus points for his pointlessly ominous comments before his death. Cecilff and FloorBelow also had solid games.

Well played, guys! On both sides.

Oranos, it was a pleasure watching you work. Except for yesterday. That was just a cluster[censored] of FUD.

Great game, Donkey. I really enjoyed it. Except for the "eyeglasses chain" of Frank the Bunny's used as the strangulation device. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one.

Sorry I made such a piss poor sneak, everyone. I didn't search a single person with a role...

Yeah, I was *not* happy yesterday because I completely disagreed with Donkey's decision to include so much extra evidence, basically taking away any kind of effort required by the innocents. Still, I knew I'd won. Had to exhaust every last possible attempt at not having to use voting shenanigans, but oh well.

Let this be a lesson to the innocents. Doubles are bad, mmkay?

Well played to all my fellow wolves. Frank managed to survive an exceptionally long time. Rosveen played incredibly well as an innocent, just wasn't able to get any steam behind her cases. I was glad I converted her, as she came up with some really good faux-cases. She just kind of got thrown under the bus with the pen evidence.

Also, well done to Slyme, for figuring out the case. Next time, put some effort into doing it before it's too late! The evidence had all been there for so, so long!

To Donkey; write ups were well done in story telling etc, evidence was pretty hit or miss though. It kind of started with the evidence that the bombs were of a very complex technical nature while there was only one person that really fit that. You kind of ramped up the evidence each day on the last few days, while if you'd kept it at one pace it still would have added up. I know it's one of the hardest things in hosting, but man, I was not pleased.

The inclusion of the "dark secrets" as some of the innocents had was kind of interesting, but with no mention of it anywhere it must've been really confusing for the regular innocents.

One last thing; I don't ever want to play a timed game again. It's not intuitive with our current rules etc.

And now, I'd like to read the dead lounge please!

@Oranos
I'm a girl.

Most of the time I had no idea what I was doing, but it still was fun. My intention was to get the feel of how Werewolf works - and I believe I did - so hopefully I'll be more active in the next game

I still can't comprehend why I wasn't executed right there on day 8. The next day the evidence against me was overwhelming, so there wasn't really anything I could do.

I think we all can agree that Oranos saved the day. Equally awesome as an innocent and as a wolf

Good game everyone! I thought my defence on the case against me would be enough, but alas, no! :D

This is the closest to a tie the game has ever had that I've participated in, including the Underground wolf game. It was just one vote away from innocent victory, right?

Feedback for the host: A different game than the others in a good way, but it did bother me to say "criminal" and not "wolf" :teehee:

All in all a good game DC I liked the personal evidence and the protection rights being revoked deal.

Also, can't I get a Useless Angel reward or something :P (BTW I called it in the sign-up)

This, it was a great game everyone, I had fun. And just as Gorbad said it was different but in a good way, but the whole time I wanted to say wolf not criminal.

I thought the evidence was good, the problem is so many people had the same damn possessions I was like crap that could be just about anyone! Anyway, Dead Lounge access please.

This was an excellent game, Donkey.

But what I really enjoyed was the ending arguments on day nine. It was just a huge slurry of argument after argument, I got confused for a bit. And the ending was a nice one. I especially liked your writing style, making them news reports instead of all-encompassing stories. Over all, it was a good game with lots of good, well written and well played characters.

Admittedly, I could have done a better job with my character. I know I didn't make many good cases against anyone, so instead just played up my character's crazy aspect as I neared my death.

The only thing I would say was lacking in this game would have been the environment. The game was "in the dark" and it didn't really feel like it was in the dark. This has been my third game of werewolf, and Drop_Dead's "Underground" game setting was well played, we used torches and mines, all adding to the underground them. Hicrine's "Carnival of Horrors" game setting was well played as well, using circus tents, animal cages, and other stuff adding to the setting. Here, it didn't really feel like it was too well played, so it could be something to look at.

I'll disagree that the evidence was heavy-handed, with the exception of the borrowed pencil. Typically there was just a couple pieces of evidence used against a criminal each day, with day 8's evidence against Oranos being a notable exception (though he'd survived as a wolf for 5 nights prior, and some of those nights the evidence against him was quite sparse, especially from the all-unknowing innocent perspective), and, to me at least, the phrase "at least one" when referring to the knife-wielders a day or two prior.

The difference was that this game had much more of a bent towards possessional evidence, which is more obvious than the standby favorite of personality traits. It was used against each wolf, so it became rote, almost a crutch. Sometimes the innocents focused on it to the exclusion of the other evidence, which was less obvious but often there - it took 3 mentions of FloorBelow's writing as 'neat' for it to be noticed, for instance. And it makes cases more open-shut once the supporting evidence is identified. I've got no problems with possession evidence (or size/hair color/other physical attributes) but it may have been used a tad too heavily here.

Tricia Takanawa

This is Tricia Takanawa reporting breaking news from some dump in the middle of nowhere: Oranos is one crafty sonova[censored], well played.

This just in! Tricia Takanawa has been crowned the "worst angel ever". More on these stories as they progress.

Hey, my other suggestions were Oranos(I do wonder how the game would've gone had we chosen him instead) and Exorince first day.

It was a good game. I'm not at all happy with how I did though. I've been distracted for most of the week, so by the time I did get a chance to read the writeups in any great detail, the innocents were already getting steamrolled. : /

Ah well, good game wolves!

EDIT: Also, can I get dead lounge access please?

Well, I had ended up being swamped with work and unexpected visitors over the weekend. I wasn't really active enough earlier in the game. And I was considering whether I was too out of the loop to bother doing anything on the last day, but then Oranos had to go and vote for me, and that I just couldn't stand for. So there was the motivation I needed.

I'm not sure I'm in full agreement with the voting rules as far as double executions go. Especially when it's the final day and we need a double. If we've set our eyes on two suspects, why on earth would we allow one of them to foul up the vote total? It all comes down to some players being available for those final minutes and others not. Conditional voting, or being able to form voter "groups" that are allowed to exclude certain players (and the group housing the most votes carries out the execution) would be better, I think. Right now, it's too exploitative. It's effectively metagaming, abuse of the system.

As Mr. E said, slyme, doubles are SUPPOSED to be hard to pull off. It's not exploitative or metagaming, it's part of the risk of going for a double.
