Werewolf: The Mists of Death - Day 1

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 6:53 pm

From the journal of Willard "Aces" Jackson

November 2nd, 1850

November is a month of mists in the San Joaquin Valley. Called tule fog by the locals, it comes after the rains and can stay for days. It rained most of the day while we were on the trail, but the sun was out by the time we rode into Crayton. Good thing, too, because the celebration was under full swing for what the locals call Dia del Muertos, the Day of the Dead. After spending the day making offerings to their newly departed dead, the people were out in force, dancing and making merry. The women were dressed in colorful clothes and the men wore their death's head masks. The boys were all ready to jump in and dance with some of the senoritas, but I reminded them we had some business that needed to be done.

After that was finished with, I found myself a nice card game in the saloon, with a couple of gents named Henry Chandler (Drop_Dead), Martin Westbroke (Xrayman), and Jim Jackson (I Do Not Know). Had a good laugh with that last fellow, joked about how maybe we were long-lost brothers. After a while, I noticed the sun had gone down and the tule was starting to creep into town. Already couldn't see more than a block from the saloon. Out in the square, some old crone (Mr.E) was shoutin' about portents, omens, evil, and whatnot, but nobody paid her any mind. A bunch of travellin' boys (Mighty Racoon, Riverstyx, Teferi, TNNWAS) came out of the flophouse and were just staring at the fog.

Then the moon came out and it all went to Hell. Several of the townsfolk tore off their masks and before my eyes began to transform into wild hairy beasts. With terrible glee they turned on their fellow revelers and just tore them to shreds. People started screaming and running, while the tule came in even thicker, until you couldn't see more than a foot or two in front of you. I don't know how long I ran through that damned mist, shivering from fear and the cold. Twice I was almost killed by those beasts, but I managed to get away. I came upon many people who hadn't been so lucky.

Then the bell up at the old mission tolled, and I ran in that direction. The old monks, bless their souls, were gathering people inside the safety of the mission walls. I slipped in just as they were closing the gates. Two of my men were there, but there was no sign of the others. As I write, we are all huddled in the chapel listening to the terrible screams and howls that come from outside the walls.

November 3rd, 1850

Morning finally came, but it brought no light with it. The tule is still so thick that little sunlight can get through, and visibility is still extremely poor. Those of us that made it through the night gathered in the town square, some who had been in the mission and some who had just been lucky. There was a joyful reunion between the couple who owned the vineyard who had been separated, but the rest of us have little cause for happiness. Of a town of near a thousand people, only about 50 or so remain. It sends shivers down my spine to think that those things could still be lurking in the mists, not twenty paces from us, and we would never know it.

One of the priests came running out from the mission just now. Seems they discovered one of their acolytes dead, killed the same way as the poor bastards out here. That means at least one of those beasts spent the night in there with us! I shudder just to think of it. Some of the others are getting restless. Jim Jackson wants to get together a posse and hang whoever is responsible, although nobody seems to know where to start. That Clyde Obannion fellow (Gamgee) says we should all get out while we can, but Sam Rusk (wolf bite) told him he didn't think we would make it a half a mile if we tried. I'm afraid he has a point. We can't go anywhere until these mists liftt.

Frank Dawson (Suffca) and Bernard Black (Exorince) are insisting we search the town, to find other possible survivors and perhaps some clues about just what it was that happened here. Everyone agrees, of course, but nobody seems keen on heading out and doing it. I guess we'll just have to do it slow like, one place at a time, wherever folks think best.

I've got to go for now. I'll try to write more later when we decide on something to do. If there is a later.

Drop_Dead

Name: Sir Henry Chandler The III
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Physical Description: As fit as a fiddle; He stands tall at 6'4, weighing about 170 pounds. He wears a bowler cap styled hat, a monocle, and a elegant suit.
Occupation: Gentlemen and Entrepreneur
Possessions: A deck of cards, a Colt .45, some ammunition, and his trusty heirloom Chandler cane.
Personality: Witty, clever, and charming. He is an excellent card shark and rarely leaves the table, unless it is to become more well acquainted with one of his many lady friends. He tends to joke around when under extreme amounts of stress, and most people respect him for his ability to both win thousands of dollars in one game of cards, then joke about losing it all in one night and begin fresh once more.

History: Henry was born into nobility. His family name was known quite well throughout America, as mostly every heir to the Chandler throne was a politician of some sort. Thus, they had strong amounts of pull in the American government. Growing up, his parents tried to give Henry was their's could, or would, not. They gave him choice; He was free to do as he pleased, and thus, ended up the worst thing the family could every dream one of their own becoming; A slacker. Or, at least their terms. While Henry grew up, he sharpened his skills by challenging nearby noble boys to a game of gold fish; The winner earning the others toys. Fast forward about twenty five years later, and hes still doing the same thing. Only now, hes playing poker, and instead of toys, he earns himself a fair bit of coin and wench's as far as the eye can see.

Exorince

Name: Bernard Black
Age: 38
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Physical Description: 179cm with greasy black hair and a rather unpleasant permanent expression on his face. He's wearing dark trousers and a dirty old coat.
Occupation: Bookshop owner
Possessions: some money,a bag of tobacco, an old smoking pipe, the little book of calm and a few delicious coasters.
Personality: Grumpy and pessimistic, Bernard is rather misanthropic man who would like nothing more than to be left alone with his books. His neurotic behaviour and foul mood makes him come off as anti-social but in fact he really likes a lot of people. Like people who sell tobacco and alcohol.
History: Bernard grew up in England where he ran a very successful bookshop until he decided one day to take a vacation and he eventually ended up in America. Unsure how or why he was there he decided that it was too much work to go back to England so he wandered around until he accidentally stumbled into an abandoned building in Crayon. A few years have passed since then and Bernard is still not quite sure how he got there but he's very pleased that the local population has very little interest in books.

Gamgee

Name: Clyde Obannion
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Physical Description: 6 feet precisely. Ratty and starved looking Native American, though this belies his agility and precise blows.
Occupation: Refugee/Outlaw/Sharpshooter
Possessions: 1816 Musket, Colt Walker (US Army Revolver), broken minature dream catcher (slightly larger than a coin), and a self converted native american knife that can be used as a bayonett.
Personality: A loner by nature, he doesn't like to talk to people. He has a big problem with US law officials, doesn't trust them. Having to survive on his own and evade capture means he's a good thinker no matter what pressure.
History: In 1830 he was forced out of his home to be relocated to another reserve. Due to the political machinations of the US government to put pressure on their chief many of his people died because they weren't traded any food, medicine, or supplies they needed. The last of his family and particular village he decided to teach the US Inspectors a lesson when they arrived the next spring to see if they were going to sign the treaty. He set an ambush for the worker and his small retinue, claiming one of the muskets as his own. One of the soldiers survived to tell the tale, and from then on he's been a drifer avoiding the law. His travels took him south at the rumors of a war, he was hoping no one would notice him there. Or know who he is due to the distance, maybe work as a soldier for hire. A texas ranger recognized him from a really old out of date wanted poster, he killed the man and took his revolver. Disposing of the body and the poster, so far it's been years and no one is any the wiser. He did make some cash during the war as a mercenary, and now he was almost ready to leave and wander somewhere else. Residents around the town know him as the silent person who likes to keep trouble makers out of town, though it's only a matter of time until he's gone one day. He swears by his old musket, and given his impressive track record during the war his superiors couldn't care he used such an antiquated rifle design. Though some had suspicions of its illiegal aquisition.

GorbadPS3

Name: Gor'badd Al' Chem'st
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Slim, small, weak. Deep green eyes. Short brown hair. Wears a deep-green version of this: http://www.aureliasr...ess_tunic_3.jpg Carries a bag with herbs and potions. Has a tattoo of a raven on his back. (large tattoo) A wound that has never healed properly limits his movement slightly, from a bullet, located on the right side of his belly.

Occupation: Alchemist / Herbalist.
Possessions: A bag, all kinds of herbs, potions, poisons, mortar & pestle, a knife used to cut plants, magnifying glass, fine dust of silver and gold in small boxes hidden in his clothing, he also smokes some of his herbs with his pipe.
Personality: Smart, social and helpful-but wouldn't hesitate to kill someone for profit. Hates guns. Slightly disconnected and happy in a false way, all the time.

History: He has been interested in herbs and plants since he was a kid. His arabic roots are merely represented in his name, he shares no visual character traits of arabs. He started his career as an herbalist by selling false potions, eventually got caught and had to flee from his home-town (doesn't reveal it to anyone, has forgotten its name himself). He joined the ravens, an underground movement smuggling illegal substances. It was from these years, when he was 22-23, that he got the tattoo. He fooled the ravens by cleaver means and managed to cheat his way high up in the ranks. In an encounter with the law, however, he was wounded and the leaders of the ravens killed. What once was the biggest underground criminal guild was now nothing. He managed to escape and moved to a safer place, quieter place (Crayton) and became a herbalist who sold honest potions for honest money. The bullet wound has never healed and he smokes a mixture of herbs regularily, which makes him forget about the wound and pain, makes him happy in a false way and somewhat disconnected.

Potions and poisons are: pain-stopping, killing, sleeping, confusing, relaxing, calming and hallucinating.

I Do Not Know

Name: Jim Jackson
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Physical Description:5'9" Average weight and build. Dirty white T-shirt, gun belt loaded with ammo, pants, boots
Occupation: Ranch hand
Possessions: Revolver, ammo, worn leather gloves, rope, large knife
Personality: Strong personality. Always gets in arguments when someone else doesn’t agree with him, even when proven wrong. Prefers to take orders, but if something gets out of control, he’ll step in. Cool headed when under pressure.

History: Jim was born in a small border town in America. He was told that his father fled from the US before Jim was born, but was never told why his father fled. His mother died when he was 15 and left him quite a bit of money, so Jim decided to move to Mexico to look for his father. A few times Jim came very close to finding him, but was always a little late, just a few days in one case. After a few years of searching, he ran out of money and took up a job at a ranch near Crayton. One day after making enough money, Jim plans to start the search again.

Indicator

Name: Llewelyn Moreau
Age: 42
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Around 5’9” and quite skinny Llewelyn doesn’t stand out very much. His hair is beginning to grey and his clothing seems a bit dated but otherwise there is nothing terribly remarkable about him.
Occupation: Farmer
Possessions: His father’s bible and cross, a shovel he never seems to part with, some seeds in his pocket and a small amount of money.
Personality: Isolationist, Llewelyn does not work well with others. He has a short fuse and little patience for doing things any way other than his own. When interacting with others he does his best to keep communication to a minimum and quickly becomes chippy if forced to engage socially with others for extended periods of time.
History: The son of one of the Jesuit missionaries, Llewelyn never adapted well to his father’s life. He instead became a farmer and has spent most of his life in privacy. He doesn’t bother his fellow villagers and for the most part they afford him the same respect. It is whispered by some that he is a bit strange, as he has no family and any man so isolationist is bound to gather a few rumors in a village so small. He is also a bogey man figure to the few children of the village. If he is aware of the way the village sees him he is either good at pretending to be oblivious or doesn’t particularly care about it.

Mighty Racoon

Name: Glenn Matthews
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Tall (6'6), grey trousers, white shirt with a black waistcoat...also, black shoes
Occupation: Travelling Businessman
Possessions: A wad of blank, plain paper; A pen; A pocketknife; A book of ledgers; Spare Ink; A wad of cash

Personality: Quick to act, and very spontaneous...always on the lookout for the next deal or sale. Will 'bend the law' to suit him, as far as Business is concerned...he'll happily trade in stolen items, and carry out underhanded deals with worse than shady characters. Not an aggressive man, but can certainly hold his own in a fight. Isn't afraid of anyone, mainly because he knows that a deal can usually be made...even if that deal happens to be a pocketknife to the throat.

History: Glenn was a simple tradesman around a year ago, until his life and job went south. Finding himself unemployed and with no money, he started to get involved in circles that weren't exactly the greatest influences. Being a natural salesman, he found he could sell pretty much anything to anyone...his only problem was getting hold of the goods! He's not sure where the products came from, only that his 'suppliers' asked for 60% of the cash he made from a sale. He decided it was best not to ask. 6 months down the line, he found himself in trouble with the Police...he somehow came away without conviction, but decided it was high time he changed his way of life...becoming a legit businessman! He's travelled around for the last 6 months buying and selling products, and achieving a healthy product margin too! After hearing about the small town of Crayton, at which several settlers were moving through, he made his way across, smelling the business opportunity from literally miles away. After all, he has no family or relations left, so there's nothing to tie him down.

Mr.E

Name: Consuela Salvadore
Age: 62
Gender: Female
Physical Description: 5 feet tall with a seemingly permanently crooked back, she wears a loose-fitting floor length pink dress and a fuzzy pair of sandals. Her hair is a glistening silver and despite looking wretched and infirm, her brown eyes seem to glow.

Occupation: Retired, formerly a medicine woman and cook.
Possessions: Around her neck is a leather necklace with an odd combination of wooden cross and several assorted teeth. A pewter container of salve that she claims soothes her joints. Her short wooden cane, a large handful of dried tobacco leaves that she enjoys chewing on, a jar of pimentos, and a carved bone flute that she hasn't played in years.

Personality: Curmugeonly sums Consuela up well - with early-onset dementia, she's both forgetful and somewhat aggressive. Her age and culture give her an inherent distrust of others and a boastful sense of tradition, though she often forgets just what that tradition actually is, so will often substitute a complete fabrication.
History: Consuela was born in Crayton (she called it Los Alvarez, though she seems to be the only one) before the war and influx of white folk. Her father was a farmer and was intensely racist toward the white men, while her mother was a gentle woman and accomplished healer. Growing up, Consuela eventually took her talents from her mother and her personality from her father. It was her mother's death, 8 years ago, that seemingly cued her dementia.

Riverstyx

Name: Nate Hargrove
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Physical Description: 6'1'' Black hair that is already graying, scar on left cheek from a near miss with a criminal's knife.
Occupation: Former lawman, then a soldier, now a bounty hunter.
Possessions: Revolver w/ammunition, hunting knife, bottle of whiskey, tin of tobacco.
Personality: Quiet and focused; his experiences as a lawman and a soldier have left him with a rather jaded and cynical view on life.
History: Nate practically grew up with a gun in his hand. He had to, having grown up on the frontier with no other means of protection. After a brief stint as an officer of the law, he left disgusted by their inability to keep order even in their own towns. After that, he joined the army and took part in the Mexican-American War, again growing fed up with what he saw as one of the most pointless wars ever. He refused to re-enlist after the war and now believes that if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. So now he hunts down criminals as a freelancer.

Suffca

Possessions: Wedding ring, a few dollars, a few chess pieces.
Personality: Frank is a very conservative man and quiet. He's always been a strategist and sharp thinker.
History: As a child, Frank loved the game of chess. He would play everyday with his older brother Mac. As Frank grew older he heard word of gold and riches in the west. TeeHee:3

Name: Sarah Dawson
Age: 34
Gender: Female
Physical Description: 5'8", fading good looks. A little plump. Red hair, tied up into a simple bun. She wears an ordinary sun dress and apron with a large straw bonnet to protect her from the sun.
Occupation: Vineyard owner's wife
Possessions: Fine gold locket, basket with several fruits and vegetables, new rolling pin, an old pair of glasses.
Personality: Sarah is about as nice as one would expect with a husband like hers. Most people mistake her ignorance as stupidity or just plain denial - but Sarah knows everything that happens at the old Dawson Vineyard. Her passive nature makes her good under pressure and her ability to remain silent and obedient means she works well in groups.
History: Sarah's family were one of the first settlers in the East coast, Irish or Scottish or a mix of both. She fell in love at a young age, as most girls do, and ran away to California with her new husband. They spent their combined inheritance buying an old vineyard and restoring it to working order, they even managed to save enough money to hire a few hands from Mexico. Unfortunately it was clear before long that Sarah was infertile which led to her gradual depression. The indifferent, bitter woman that Sarah is today is simple a husk of her former self. It's no wonder her husband does the things he does.

When he was old enough to hunt, he would regularly venture out on his own so he could go beyond the boarders of the reservation and hunt freely. One day while hunting on the dusty planes, he crested a hill and was confronted by 3 white men, they beat him giving him is scar in the process, and took all of his kills and furs for their own. Undead Fiend

History:Alexander never had a good life. His parent's died when he was 12 from clohera. His sister died when he was 15 from smallpox. (I can't remember if that was a big thing in 1840's or not. Sorry!) He has lived a life of hardships and became a courier because of it. He wanted to get away from people. He did for 3 years, and when he came back he was the friend you wanted to have. He was trouble free, until one day he was shot when he was delivering mail.

Twice in the head, how he managed to survive no-one will ever know but he did, and since then he's shot and killed the man who killed him and took his revolver. Alexander uses it every day, he's very good with his guns. He's very good at sneaking around people and talking to them too. Xrayman

Name: Martin Westbrooke
Age: 49
Gender: Male
Physical Description: About 5'10", and somewhat chubby. Wears a fine, gray double-briasted suit with a white shirt and purple ascot. Has a pair of black leather shoes and wears a brown leather hat.
Occupation: Traveling salesman
Possessions: A gold pocket-watch on a gold chain, a small hip-flask filled with high-quality bourbon, a silk handkerchief, a wooden cane, and a pamphlet advertising his product.
Personality: Boisterous and somewhat lewd (what one would expect from a salesman), however mostly kind-hearted. He handles pressure and crowds well; as a salesman, he has become accustomed to dealing with large, frantic gatherings of people
History: As a child, Martin was fairly secluded. Due to the dangerous nature of the area in which he lived, his well-meaning (although overprotective) parents kept him under a watchful eye. However, for much of his childhood he wanted to be a gunslinger from the many stories that he had heard. As he grew up, he realized that not only was this very dangerous, though due to his stature he really couldn't have done it anyway. He soon became enraptured by the methods used by traveling salesman to sell their otherwise ineffective product, and after toiling for many weeks, he brewed what he deemed a fairly tasty beverage that he decided he could sell as a cure-all. He purchased horses and a covered wagon, and spent many years traveling. Prior to the events of this game, he was traveling through the desert when a rattlesnake startled his horses and threw him from his wagon. With nothing more than what he had on him (aside from a small canteen of water, which he soon finished), he wandered for many days until he stumbled across a small town called Crayton.

Don't much trust that Mr. Obannion fella trying to clear out right as soon as the sun rose. We needa stay here until we bring them beasts to justice for what they done to our town. Do we know who all managed to make it to the mission or did no one bother to check in all the panic of the night?

I certainly wasn't doing a headcount, and I don't think anyone else was, either. Although, for them wine folks to be reunited, I'm sure one of them must have been inside.

Well I'd be damned, I already have to put up with my wife and now bloodthirsty wolves?

I believe we should search the flophouse first. Seeing how there's so many survivors there. Maybe we can sort them out through what we find.

I can't believe we made it through the night! Boy I tell ya, I have never seen anything like that! But I know one thing is for sure, I would love to have me a nice wolf skin to keep me warm at night! Next time I see me one of them furries, I'ma gonna do some skinning!

Anyways, as far as searching goes, I think we should do what Frank said, and search the flophouse.

Sir Henry Chandler The IIi

Henry watches the crowd as they chat, leaning against a post and shuffling his cards. After a few statements are made, he tilts up his hat and voices his opinion

These wolves are making lady luck quite anxious. Quite anxious indeed.. She hasn't been this riled up since..

Ahh, it doesn't matter. What does matter, is that she is still on our side, since for some reason we are all still breathing and not some wolf's torn up play thing. I'm assuming, knowing what we know, that the Flophouse is our best option.

Henry tilts his hat back, and begins shuffling once more.

Well ive read about werewolves once in a book of the dammed they say the only way to reveal a wolfs true form is to kill him so that might not be useful but i reckon that when we start the executions it will help us determine who is and who isn't

Damn. Flophouse.

OOC: I have a question regardin' the rules, in the sign-up thread a player stated that they received a role. Now, I'm not goin' to vote for them based off of that, but I would like to know if that role claim disqualifies them from angel protection. I'd rather the angels not waste a protection if it turns out that it is void.

I say we search the Mission. We need more clues about what happened to that poor sod.

Suddenly, Consuela jerks her head to the side.

...Ouch. That felt like a hammer.

It would appear I can speak English after all. It's... Strange. But I suppose I'll need to get along with you pale people anyway, so I might as well get used to it.

I wish to search the Vineyard. First, because I think splitting our search among that many survivors will only dilute our chances of getting meaningful information on any of them. Second, because I could use a drink. My head is splitting.

The gods are angry at us. It seems I have wondered into a forsaken town. I suggest that we square for evidence, we must start the hunt, we must be the hunter, not the prey. Besides, I can always use more pelts to trade.

Sure, I'll help search the Flophouse. But if I catch anyone stealing my stuff, Jim checks to make sure his revolver is loaded I shoot first, then shoot again.

My apologies, with this foul mist about I could not see that we were already in the square. Can we see the carnage from last night? What types of wounds do the lost souls have? Can we see wolf tracks? Do they lead anywhere in particular or in a specific direction?

I think a better idea would be to search the mission. We know that at least one of them made it in there, so maybe we can pick up on a trail from there.

OOC: No, it does not.

Most of them are badly mauled. Bitten and scratched, that sorta thing. Some of them were shot, but by whom it's hard to tell. The tracks lead everywhere. I don't know how many of them wolves it would take to kill that many people, but I reckon it must have been a damn lot. There can only be a few of them among us now, but why the rest left, I don't have a clue. Maybe time will tell. Maybe if we look in the right places.

Aces

With these mists, I don't think its a good idea to split up, like. We all stay together and search one place at a time. Where first? Well, that's for you to decide.

I can't see what good searching the flophouse will do this early on... We should at least give the wolves a bit of time to accumulate some evidence. Let's search the missionary instead, that's where that poor man died after all.

Gor'Badd Al' Chem'st

*Fills his pipe with a calming herb, with shaky hands, puts fire on the herbs and takes a deep breath of the calming smokes. Hands still shaking.*

R-Right now the missionary seems like the best place to search.
*pauses, herbs are starting to calm his nerves.*
We have no idea what to look for in the flophouse and anything we find could be thought of as evidence. I'd very much like to figure out how many werewolves there actually were.. If they killed nearly a thousand villagers in one night.. Well, it's an impossible math to do as we have no idea what these savages can do.

OOC: Edit: Put red on a larger amount of text and bolded it, just to perfectly flag that is my vote.

That mission is mighty large, si. But I can see how it makes sense to search there, if we know the furries were in there. I will search the mission and put off the wine for another day. Perhaps I will need it more then anyway.
