Werewolf - worth it? If yes, what sort of build?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 12:45 pm

Looking through UESP about Skyrim & Lycanthropy, and it occurred to me that I might want to actually try it sometime.

So, first question: Is being a werewolf fun and/or effective?

And second question: What is a good race / "class" / roleplaying style to fit with being a werewolf?

I would want a character who was all about the Companions, obviously, so a fighter-ish type. But also one that tended more toward being a hunter, living in the wild. Seems like Orc might be a good fit, but I'm open to ideas.

At first, but it loses its fire. It doesnt level with your character and its almost like just fighting naked.

100% disease resist, 1900 carry weight when a werewolf insane travel speed as a wolf. Their fighting is based off of light armor skill and 1Handed. They are good at low levels but start to fall off at the higher levels people say. I am level 76 and still enjoy changing just to rip some bandits apart from time to time. Just dont change in the middle of batter as it take about 20 sec and you are taking damage the entire time. Down side no resting bonus. To me I did not find that a problem as I was not looking to power level my way through the game and still made it to level 76 a little over 3 months after the game came out so it really doesnt change things that much as I forgot to sleep anyways. Plus when I am working a new character I always just use the lovers stone as it is +15% to all skills.

Oh and no bounty for kills so long as no one saw you change.

other down sides you cant heal with magic or potions while in wolf form only via feeding, and you cant loot bodies until you change back. Changing indoors may also cause you to get stuck in a room until you change back as of you sheer size not being able to make it through the door way.

yes, being a werewolf is fun an effective, there's a learning curve to it, I died a lot when learning to use the werewolf's skills.

Any race is fine for being a werewolf, Khajiit are best since their claws ability stacks with the werewolf's increased unarmed damage so they would deal a lot more damage as a werewolf than other Races. I recomend a Ranger or sneaky fighter for a werewolf, this way you can use lycanthropy to shake things up. Your character is a bit more methodical but then can turn into a werewolf and rush down the enemies. You'll also want a character that specializes in light armor since the light armor perks count for werewolf form and give you more armor in the form, Heavy armor users might end up a lot more vulnerable in werewolf form. Lord is the best Guardian stone for werewolves as it increases their armor and magic protection.

Awesome, thanks for the tips!

Good to know about the light armor thing - that actually makes me think Orc wouldn't be a good race for this (for me), because that +10 in heavy armor is too much of a boost for me to ignore, and I'd probably work that up with my Orc rather than light armor.

Khajiit seems to have some nice synergy, yeah - although going from cat to dog seems a bit funny.

I have thought about Bosmer for this actually... going with a ranger type character, who uses swords & bows. Werewolf form might (?) make him a bit more viable in melee. Plus, the whole carnivore/hunter thing seems like it would be a great fit for the "savage" wood elf lore.

Skills probably something like:

One-handed
Light Armor
Archery
Sneak(?) - maybe only a little here, to keep things interesting

and Alchemy as support, for poisons and the like.

My only reservation is, how would this character justify joining the Companions? Sees like he would be pretty independent...

What do you think?

I was so excited about being a werewolf at first. Then after i played around for a while, I couldn't finish the companion stroy line fast enough so i could choose to cure myself. It's kinda cool being able to transform and getting the random dialouge about it from the guards. But other than that I cant say it was worth it. Kinda wish you could level up your werewolf or atleast get new powers.

I'm a Bosmer and it works pretty stinking good. But I also have a question, is there a cure for lycanthropy?

Don't listen to this guy....just like stated before me:

1 handed
Light armor are the main skills.
Nothing else serves a purpose to werewolf except your health and stamina.

I'm an orc and enjoying it but haven't put the werewolf to its full potential since I'm heavy armor. I will roll another char strictly for being a werewolf eventually since it does kinda play out and maybe make things more challenging(no potions) I think it'd be rather fun.

yeah it is a bit Ironic to have a cat become a dog^^.

As for RP ideas, he has a crush on Aela^^. Though he might join to just have some friends in the strange world, being independent doesn't mean having to be a Recluse and Aela tends to be rather independent and sneaky. He could also join to have more access to the Skyforge and Skyrim's "best" smith.

Just a couple of ideas. My werewolf was a Khajiit WitchHunter (a witch and a hunter not a hunter of witches though she did hunt a few witch's covens.) and she was very fun, turning into a werewolf was a gamechanger because she was built for mostly neaking and then summoning help if she got caught.

It is very fun. I enjoy it a lot.

At higher levels you become less op because it does not level with you, but it's still viable.

It's pretty sweet, but don't build your whole character around since you can only use it once per day and it's timed. Yeah, you can extend it by feeding, but, still you're gonna' have to do a lot of fighting as a human unless you only want to fight like 3 minutes per day. :P

The disease resistance is really good especially since you won't have to worry about Vampirism.

Personally, I love being able to kill without a murder rap. I always wondered about the transforming in front of people - I suspected that as long as no one sees you you don't get the murder in your stats. I always transform out of view and flee from the scene before I transform back.

Be advised you will be naked when you transform back so be ready to throw gear back on if you're around hostiles.

Going to go ahead and say not to listen to the second guy. As other people have mentioned, werewolf form doesn't really scale with increasing level. Factoring in things like weapon skill and such that affect werewolf form is neat, but unless someone confirms that it's still viable in combat over non-beast at higher levels, I'm going to say it's not worth it after a certain point.

Yes thats right. It is "viable" as you .. could.. do it, but later in the game when you have max armor and razor-sharp smith weapons and spells, then the beast form comes up lacking and fragile.
