What are the reasons that they decided to create this game?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 11:04 am

I'll keep it short, what reasons do you think they 'Zenimax shadow people' decided to make this game? Do you think it will succeed or not? Do you think they considered the reactions that people would have to this before creating it and is that why they are letting people vent instead of creating an seperate forum, considering they had 5 years to make the forum?

I understand people have strong opinions but hopefully we can keep it civilised

Money, money and money. That's the reason that any game is created.

Honestly, I think a quick trip to Wikipedia would clear up exactly what Zenimax and Bethesda's relationship is for a lot of people.

As well, this sub-forum is a temporary holding place until their "official" page goes live. (I do believe there's a sticky up at the top of the sub-forum explaining exactly this.)

As for "why?" Well, honestly - as one of those who have been merging the "I want a multiplayer Elder Scrolls" threads into the official one on a regular basis for as long as I've been a moderator, I'd say that it's never been much of a secret that a lot of people seem to have been wanting an Elder Scrolls MMO.

Me, I'll probably stick with the single-player Elder Scrolls in the future (don't have time for an MMO.) But I'm not too worried about this, either.

My Impressions? Obviously picking the TES title means either

1. they are milking the Cow

or

2. Trying to make something TES fans will like

If one is true I'm not surprised, but its not like people haven't been fantasizing about this for some time

If two is true, then I say MMO fans aren't a Factor because their are MANY Tes Fans that Like MMO's so splitting the middle between the two is asking for trouble, and from what I've read I'm seeing an MMO with TES flavors than a TES with MMO flavors, on top of the already played out traditional MMO formula being applied to a TES themed Game.

Effectively Zenimax Online could have picked any series to make into an MMO, and they chose TES. reasons other than its Popularity I do not know, but if you're going by Popularity, the FANS that make it popular should be the focus...not to "draw people who Play MMO" or "to make them comfortable" I mean...its an MMO, if people play MMO's whats to make them Comfortable? if anything its TES fans who don't do MMO's you should be focusing on "making Comfortable"

Anyway still waiting and seeing.

Pretty much. They're cashing in on the ES franchise's popularity while it's at it's highest.

Because of the huge amount of money they will gain from it. Was it really that hard to figure out?

Did you really had to make a whole thread just to ask this question?

Same reason they keep making all the TES games.

If you think the reasons behind making an MMO are any different than the reasons for making any other game you are mistaken. No doubt, someone has a vision, its someone's baby, but it only gets to us once someone is convinced it'll make money.

One reason is money. They want to cash in on the great TES name built by many great single player games.

They didn't know the popularity was going to be this high until Skyrim was released. They could easily have gone down the Fallout road, but yeah, the bottom line is the bottom line.

Maybe, just maybe it's because they like to make games and went to college to learn to make games and Zenimax did some feasibility studies for making an MMO and got massive requests for a TES MMO and decided that that was a market they could go into and thus hired a bunch of game developers and set up shop and went to work in hopes it would be a success. As nu_clear_day said above, all of us moderators know there have been slews of threads from people demanding a TES MMO for years. I could fill a battleship with the number of threads I've closed and referred to the "official MMO" thread or merged with it through the years. We've had such a thread since I've been a moderator and even before.

So, maybe Zenimax is just targeting the MMO market because it makes good sense and the devs are making it because they love to make games. Nothing difficult to understand about that methinks.

Aww I'm already taken :(

I know you don't really control what overlords get up to but is there any way you can suggest a poll stickied all over the forums about who is for, against or undecided for the mmo? I know it might seem counter productive to the game but I'd love to get a more general community first opinion on the game. So many people say 'A small group for' or '67% of the forums wanted this' or '99% were totally against' without having anything to back it up. Would be nice to see something more solid on it.

Trouble is by making it 'typical' mmo and from the features we have seen so far it seems to go against point 2. Only reason in my gut for making it TES is riding the success of the TES name to get more sales. I'm still upset by this game but I would be willing to give it a chance if there was something special and unique about it and if it did not copy other mmo features we have seen! Still, bad first impression. Perhaps gameplay footage and further details will change my mind but i'm not too hopeful sadly. I should say traditionally I don't like mmo games but I would have been much happier if;

-Open World Sandbox
-First person mode
-No levels, leveling system the same as previous single player elder scrolls game
-They did not add lore that seems a bit... off (I know Zenimax Online taked to Bethesda about this but still the lore makes my head spin)
-Something new and shiny (Not sure what that could be not experienced too much as I don't really like general mmo games)
-Something that screams and feels TES
-As with the point above, the hero engine generic art style leaves a bad taste in my mouth, need to see gameplay then if the jump animation looks like WoW I might just be done with this game
-Would have loved to see this game not Tamriel, Akavir would have been great; all those fresh things and no lore rage cause they'd be making something new

I hope those points make sense I know they are somewhat recycled and have been said before but that is more or less my view on the matter. I don't mean to offend anyone this is my opinion I know some of you out there are looking forward to this.
