Arx Fatalis isn't an open-world RPG, but a spiritual successor to the Ultima Underworld games. It's a dungeon crawler, but rather than emphasizing hack-and-slash play like the Diablo series it keeps a firm hand on story, NPCs, and exploration.

The story is fairly linear, as is the order you open up new areas, but many plot points can be handled in multiple ways which adds a lot of breadth to gameplay, and replayability. The dungeons also have many secrets which are fun to snoop out.

While areas are unlocked it's uncommon for sections to become blocked off. There are a few story-important areas that you can only visit once, but most regions can be visited multiple times. In a few cases they'll even change to reflect the choices you made in the story.

No, actually its nothing like Baldur's Gate and it's especially nothing like Final Fantasy.

Like Hungry Donner said, its like Ultima Underworld, although he isn't exactly correct in the statement that certain areas are locked for you - they are not. You can go anywhere you want around the 8 dungeon levels, and where there's some obstacle you can generally go around that.

The game is incredibly fun and very immersive and atmospheric, with lots of additional mechanics like smithing, alchemy and cooking. By far the most interesting mechanic is the way you cast spells, which will either turn you off or will bring you some satisfaction.

Bottom line is any dungeon crawler/RPG fan should try this game, its great fun.

It has been a while since I've played, but I thought there were a few areas you could only access once.

Spoiler
For example, there is a large section of the Dwarven tunnels that you get chased through, and I'm pretty sure you can't go back to those areas.

@EternalDarkness Its for XBox and PC. Play the PC version. Its been patched as recently as this year, and should run perfectly fine on modern hardware.

@Hungry Donner
Spoiler

The only thing that happens when you get chased by the black thing is that it collapses a small entrance to the dwarven kitchens, everything else remains intact and can be gone back through.

Then why did you ask if it's like The Elder Scrolls? Did you mean the phone games?

You mean for the PS3?

Because if you had an Xbox (or Xbox 360, IIRC) you should be able to play the Xbox version of Arx Fatalis.

I guess, in many respects, you could say it shares similarities with Elder Scrolls games: a first-person RPG, with a limited degree to develop your own character, do various actions, etc.

It's definitely nowhere near as "open-world;" most obviously, the game takes place ENTIRELY in a single dungeon. It's a huge, 8-floor dungeon, but a dungeon nonetheless. Likewise, there's no real "multiple paths," thing; while you can decide to, say, go on a murderous rampage, there's really only one questline you can follow along to the end.

No side quests?

Yes there are side quests, but all tie into the main quest yet are not required. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1221852-arx-fatalis-faq-and-compendium/ is a FAQ thread. The game is available on only two platforms; PC and Xbox. No 360 or Play Station and a comment from http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1255023-xbla-version/page__view__findpost__p__19148530, a profile emulator is most likely not going to happen.

That comment was on a thread in regards to an XBLA version of Arx Fatalis... While the game may be one of a tiny handful to NOT have proper emulation profiles for the 360, I don't see why it couldn't... Though I thought those profiles were Microsoft's responsibility... I recall a comment from Pete Hines or someone else in regards to that when people were complaining of the (then) lack of a profile to run Morrowind on the 360.

I thought the two went hand-in-hand actually... My bad.

Honestly I'm not sure who drives the production of the emulators. It very well could be MS, but there would have to be enough demand on the title to give them incentive if it is the case. I remember hearing that live support on Xbox titles will end Spring of next year, so chances are still very slim that this will happen.

Not really, no. Although the source code for the game has been released, maybe some enthusiastic fellow will give it a shot, but I seriously doubt it.

Did you click the link? There's a like a million results. The game is 9 years old, so I doubt you can find it in stores. And there is a need to be snippy, your questions could be answered in a 5 second google search.

Just one question. I played this game on the Xbox and loved it. I just recently purchased it again via Steam. Are the latest patches applied to the Steam distribution of the game, or shall I add those manually?

I know GoG has theirs patched, but I'm unsure about Steam. Easiest way to tell what version you have is looking under the bottom right of the title on the launch screen or for txt files in the games folder. The latest exe for distribution was v1.19 but if you're using Vista or later OS then you should also look for r1.21.

why are you going into every sub forum of the Beth forums and asking what each game is or making meaningless topics? Do you think your post count padding is going to make you more important or something? lol.

The other person is right, google is your friend. Youtube also to watch videos of each game if you want to know what they are. No one cares how many posts you have, lol.
