What Bethesda Was Trying To Do...

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 4:38 am

I don't regret spoiling the revelation of werewolves for myself, but I felt I needed to take a moment to realize just what Bethesda was trying to do by keeping werewolves under wraps. I wonder, now, just what it would have been like to discover the existence of werewolves on my own.

I would have never thought that joining the companions would lead me down that path. Can you just imagine the twist it would have been for you, the player, to be convinced that joining the Companions would be no different than joining the Fighters Guild, only to be suddenly surprised that within this warrior faction was the ecstasy of lycanthropy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdhhQhqi_AE

Anyways, I just wanted to show my appreciation in what Bethesda was trying to do and to commend them on the way they added the werewolf concept into game. For those who refuse to be spoiled and for those who are out of the loop will be pleasantly surprised. Thanks.

I agree, it would have been really nice to discover it. I was actually going to join the Companions right after I reach the first town, so I would have discovered it on my first day. A little disappointed.

lol, I'll be honest- It was never a priority to join the companions purely based on the fact that I thought it would be just like the Fighter's Guild in Oblivion.

I was never too worried if there would or wouldnt be werewolves, so I agree that with it not being on my mind at all it would have been amazing to discover!

i just hope that this doesn't ruin our chances of future good content that we ask for. Can you imagine someone begging you for content in your game and you want to surprise them and you work so hard to keep it a secret and you worked so hard on the content only to have people blab about it? I feel kinda bad that I know.

At the same time I would feel very pleased to know people are devoting hours of their lives trying to scrounge around to find any info they could on my game!

If anything, they'll probably put harsher restrictions on companies like GameStop and any reviewer copies that come out early.

Speak of the devil....I just accidentally spoiled this for myself right now! I'm feeling a mixture of awe, surprise, and regret (for having spoiled such a feature). My character is a spellsword who wasn't supposed to join the Fighter's Guild in the first place. Now, I have to think about how I am going to have to think of a plan B.

Same here, but I also appreciate Bethesda's desire for secrecy on it.

I think it is what it is and regretting it doesn't do any good. Supposedly a bethesda rep had tweeted by accident a picture of a werewolf a few months ago or something and then the tweet went down seconds later but people managed to catch the image.

I wasn't on the OMG WANTWEREWOLVES!! bandwagon but I do feel a twinge of regret at spoiling that for myself. I've had to make due with not checking out the screenshots, etc and avoiding the threads here detailing quests, etc. It would have been a big surprise but I'm betting Skyrim is going to have plenty of those.

It doesn't really feel like much of a spoiler.

I'm just glad to see Bethesda has listened to the wants/needs of it's community and done everything they (reasonably) can to deliver a solid gaming experience.

Yeah, I'm making a good warrior, and I would have joined the companions almost right away, and when I would come to that part where the guy transforms, I would have sh*t my pants o.o

To each his own, I prefer to learn about such features ahead of time.

"Keeping it a surprise" would have done nada for me. If anything, I'm a bit disappointed they lied about it for so long. People who dont want to know shouldnt hang on spoiler forums.

Considering the damage this community endured (successfully) during the hype period, I think we actually needed that spoiler after all...
It was like being shocked in the chest when I knew werewolf was in.

Yeah they were kind of sneaky, towards the end they were making it sound like werewolves were not in and a 'maybe in DLC' thing... feel kind of bad for seeing the spoiler now since they genuinely wanted to surprise us, sorry Beth =[

I was pleasantly surprised when i found out werewolves are in the game. If none of it was leaked, i wouldnt of found out since i had no intention of joining the companions with my vampire character right away. I would be roaming skyrim, believing a werewolf dlc was going to be made while all along they were in the game. I would have to make a new game and a new werewolf character. But now i know which town to go to first after the first quest. We know now why there was "No comment on werewolves" or "let them wait. Quit asking to spoil the game" because they know werewolves now play a major plot in one of their main factions. We all suspected they were going to be in the game until Matt carano "Confirmed" they were not in the game. Well done Bethesda. You tried your best and thanks for the game winning feature you gave us besides cannibalism and vampirism.

This is only my personal opinion, but I believe that the thing they should have done (or should do) was to have a simple image released with that certain werewolf depicted against the red moon /Masser (as in the leaked photos, but in much greater quality). No explanations/spoilers, just that image, and I believe that would have got most people excited. The companion questline and all that Hircine stuff would have remained a pleasant surprise, but people would have something to anticipate. I guess it'll go officially public sooner or later, but I think the werewolves are a big sales booster. But then again, points to Bethesda for not thinking about just the sales.
