What am I doing that makes this happen?

Post » Mon Oct 29, 2012 8:36 pm

When I get my character up to around level 30 I start to get burnt out and want to create a new character. Is it because I keep going into each character with a set plan in mind? For example, for my current guy I knew I wanted to be a stealth assassin/ranger, so I once again did the DB quest line as well as the Thieves Guild. I've done these several times.

Basically I am looking for ways to not get burnt out on a character. I am not burnt out on the game itself. Every time I start a new guy I am really excited to play, so it isn't the game. I still haven't even done the Dawnguard quests yet.

Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong?

My friend is just like this, although he doesnt even get to 30. Do you fast travel? And do you rp? It could just be that you are genuinely bored. Nothing wrong with that.

What are you doing wrong? Quite frankly, I don't think you are anything wrong at all. Judging by your post, you seem to enjoy creating archetypes and fulfilling them.

You could perhaps, create a character with an archetype that is more broad in nature, as opposed to being pigeon-holed (so to speak) into a very specific archetype.

Like Dean said, you seem to like making Archetypes, which if that is true, you could find one that you really like and rp a character around that. Some people of course hate being told to rp, because no one can really tell you how to do it. Everyone does it differently, and not everyone can really do it.

I have a similar problem, especially when I make a Nord character. I have, however, made a Khajiit and have been trying to play realistically - I completely ignore the Main Quest, and avoid most guild quests. A Dead is Dead run helps as well, since people rarely pass level 15-20. It keeps you on your toes.

When u get to level 30 try switching your character to a new class type for a while and then after 10-15 levels start using skills from both class then you could be a barbarian/ranger or a mage/assassin.

I don't know if it'll help, but my main (high 20's archer) is going through a similar transition now. He was a down-on-his-luck bandit-turned-mercenary who had no ambitions beyond doing odd jobs for the folk in Whiterun for a few coins. Now that he's established himself, though (Harbinger, two houses, a wife and an adopted kid), he's starting to take the whole Dragonborn thing a bit more seriously. He's come back to the main quest line, and is doing the religiously-themed quests along the way to try to figure out what, if anything, is actually worth fighting for (prompted by a chance encounter with Froki).

So maybe that's what you need - some sort of cause, or a quest for a cause (which can be a cause in itself)?

Base your characters around the quests you want to do with them, or the items you want to get. Then when you've done what you set out to do, shelve them. Think of an endgame - something you want to do in a cool way that will bring the story to a satisfying conclusion.

It's much more enjoyable to play the game if you let the levels sort themselves out, and just go adventuring imo. I've shelved characters at various levels between 40 and 65.

I don't fast travel and I do RP. Although, every time I have created a chracter I have known what quest lines I want to do, mostly because they eventually give you an item that my character wants to use. Maybe this is what is doing it? I JUST finished DB and Thieves Guild on my stealth guy and am starting to feel burnt out and thinking of new ideas for my next character. I wonder if this is my problem? Maybe if I have NO GOAL in mind when I start a guy I will not run into this? I am not sure...

It is possible. I do turn to missions that I want to do for items, but not until I have a reason that my character would have to do it. Like kinda going with the flow, you know?

I roleplay so if your not doing that I strongly recommend it. If you do roleplay (or start to) try introducing a pivoting point to your characters story, for example one of my characters was a really good character, never did a single thing wrong, and I admit it was starting to get a bit boring, so I decided that, with Dawnguard, she would be infected by a vampire when fighting them before I got Dawnguard. I then roleplayed how she would react to it and what her decisions would be after. She ended up joining the Thieves Guild to find somewhere that wouldn't try to kill her on sight and then joined Harkon as the Dawnguard refused to help her. Now, she is much more angry and bad, though she still has good in her heart. That easily gave me another thirty to forty levels before I got bored with her again. She is now about level 55-60.

This is why some people play multiple characters at once, so they don't get burnt out on that character.

I typically play until I'm bored and I start a new one and plan on coming back later and start rolling out new characters until I find one I like.

You're not doing anything wrong. Just think about what is making you bored and if it's just because you're playing the same character, save it on it's own file and make another character and come back later.
