What is everypony reading? (Re-post)

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:59 pm

The original one hit the post capacity, so here's a new one.

I just finished the Riddle-Master of Hed. It didn't particularly grip me and I felt like things happened a bit too fast, but it was alright. I'll probably read the second and third books soon.

I'm going to start book 4 of the Dresden Files next, which I'm pretty excited about.

I am currently in the middle of Mission 6 of the Mission Earth Dekalogy by L. Ron Hubbard. All of the Missions so far have been entertaining and funny. I have all ten missions so I will be able to finish the series.

Reading the new series of Percy Jackson books. Is it bad if I never really moved on to reading 'advlt' books?

I have been on a bit of a Max Barry kick, I read Syrup and Jennifer Government recently (loved Syrup) and I've just started the first chapter of Company. It seems a bit harder to get into for some reason though :/

Great book. I've read every Bukowski book. Ham on Rye and Factotum are my favorite. Bukowski was a very angry man, but he had a streak of genius in him.

I'm reading Game of Thrones and I'm a quarter way through. I have a Clash of Kings sitting on my bookshelf waiting when I'm finished.

Having just finished 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea I exchanged it for The Mysterious Island. It is much better than 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea so far, but I shall have to wait and see if it's better than Robinson Crusoe.

I'm currently at the starting-to-get-going point of The Dragon Reborn, the third book of the Wheel of Time series.

Loving it so far. Unfortunately, people say these were the best three.

I'm going back through The Fall of Reach - Eric Nylund.

Explains a lot of the backstory of Halo :) One of my favourite books of all time!

In English I'm reading How to Read a Book by M. Adler. It seems like the best place to start, especially because I'm reading some very dense stuff, namely, The Point Of View on My Works as an Author by S. Kierkegaard as well.

I've heard a lot people's favourite is 4, but I guess it depends what they're looking for. I've read 1-4 and 4 basically expands hugely. Everything is more complex.

I think now that they're almost all out, it wouldn't be as painful going through the series. I imagine those people who had to wait 3-4 years between books would be frustrated, it's understandable. I'm thinking it'll be possible to just get past the most hated books (8 and 10 I think) since they're all out... and the guy who is finishing it is supposedly doing a good job.

That's just what I've heard, though. I imagine different people would have all different opinions.

I'm loving it so far. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know much about him until a few weeks ago when I was looking for quotes and stumbled across some of his poems. I'm definitely going to be picking up his books whenever I find them.

It's pretty good. I read the first and second Dark Tower books. I started the third but it dragged on at the beginning and when it started to get interesting I became very busy so I had to put it down, haven't read the series since. Eddie Dean is a great character.

times. It took me about a week to finish all 39 books and several gallons of coffee

Started The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss on a whim the other day. 350 pages in, and it is surprisingly good. Very immersive and has some of the best-flowing prose I've read. Before that I read The Storm Front by Jim Butcher. That was pretty bad. I also recently got Godel, Escher and Bach, my first dead tree book in a very long time, but although I've wanted to read it for a long time, I find myself unable - it's too bulky to carry with me to work and read while commuting, and I don't have enough lighting in my bedroom to read it before sleep (which is when I usually read).

It is, it's fantastic. Especially the first four books. From the first to the fourth the series only keeps getting better. The last three books are not as good, but still highly enjoyable.

I tried reading The Once and Future King over the past few weeks, as I had heard a bunch of people describe it as the greatest fantasy book of all time and all that. I couldn't get into it, I thought it was terrible. I'm reading Watership Down now and I'm loving it. I saw the movie dozens of times as a kid, but I never got around to reading the book. It's even better than I had imagined.

Damn, that's impressive. I'm lucky to have time to finish one book in a week these days.

I just got these. My sister told me that they were great so I'm going to give them a try. I will probably get to them around summer time.

I wouldn't call The Once and Future King the greatest fantasy book of all time but it is a good book. Gets better as it goes on. T. H. White is very dated though. I doubt a modern writer would be as racist as he is unless deliberately aiming to cause controversy whereas when he wrote there was nothing remarkable in what he wrote.
