What is a Gamer?

Post » Mon May 13, 2013 5:34 am

So the title says it all, we all hear the term 'Gamer' on forums involving a game or games. But there are so many interpretations. With that in mind,I'm curious how each of you view a 'Gamer' to be?

That's a horribly vague and subjective definition.

For me, there are at least two definitions of a "gamer"

1- One who obsessively plays videogames of all kinds (huge variety in taste), and is interested past the simple gameplay

2- One who obsessively plays a game or two... so even if all they play is WoW they're still a gamer

I don't consider someone who "once in a while" plays games to be a gamer. The word 'gamer' in the first place was used to describe the people who stood out as heavily playing video games

It was the positive connotation, while the negative was to be called a geek or a nerd, which made no sense as it is.

One who owns a gaming system.

A gamer is one who plays games because he enjoys them, and doesn't [censored] about other gamers preferences.

Someone who plays games. No need to complicate things with personal bias.

Someone who plays games as a consistent hobby. Then you can break gamers down into the core and casual audience. Casuals don't have to play just Farmville, COD, and the other stereotypical casual games. They're just people who don't pay a whole lot of attention to what they consume. They also don't take gaming as serious as the core. It's more of a pastime for them. Core would people like us. Those who follow the industry and have a passion for gaming.

Several definitions. Or sub categories.

A gamer is someone who plays a video game.

hardcoe Gamer is someone who is willing to invest more time in a game and/or involve themselves in more complicated games that others would not find appeal in attempting to do. It is almost like a hobby to these people.

Casual Gamer is someone who plays games occasionally or as a brief pass time. They might only play briefly and/or games that have a low learning curve which can be picked up quickly and played a lot.

That's assuming he meant casual as in game preference. Which he probably did.. well maybe

The game doesn't matter... one can play the hell out of Angry Birds.

There's also casual as in "every few days or weeks plays a game," and that is not really a gamer. That would make everyone a gamer, and the word gamer wouldn't have reason to exist

This.

It's an insect that feeds on bananas. Or alternatively, one who plays computer games as a significant pastime, though I'm being deliberately vague about "significant"!

Nah, by 'casual' he probably meant 'one who ruins the gaming industry' without bothering to explain how. It doesn't have to do with what game they like, it has to do with what he heard the other 'hard-core gamers' saying.

Be prepared for no response.

A gamer is vague stereotypicall label, that was put on people that play and enjoy video games by the memebers of the society who are not used to it as a media, or to stupid to understand it's phenomen. It applies to every one that plays video games: Casual or hardcoe.

You don't call people who are going to cinema - cinemaners. Or people who read books - bookers. It sounds idiotic. And so does gamers.

But this will change and in 10 years or else. The label will be completely forgotten.
