What good are lesser gems?

When I enchant an item I use a grand or greater soul gem and none of my enchanted weapons will recharge with anything lower than a common. What do you use lesser gems for?

You can recharge a weapon with any soul gem including lesser and petty ones. If you are a PC, I don't know about the consoles, you may be fooled into believing only a common or better will do by the fact that you can't scroll down the gem selection box with your mouse. However, if you use the up and down arrows on the keyboard you will see all the charged gems that you have in your inventory and can select anyone of them.

For training enchant skill to 100. Don't tell me you used grand/black soul gems for that.

yep i used lesser and petty gem for all my training.

never use any gem above common for this, save your best gems when you hit 100 to enchant your weapons and armour, that way you can make an assortment of different set ups

Like others said, petty soul gem w/ petty soul + iron dagger = enchanting xp + profit.

Also, topping up the charge on a not-quite-full item, or providing a minimal charge to an item you only plan on using a couple times.

Or even for actual weapon enchanting on personal equipment when you don't care about running out of charge (like, say, on a notched pickax enchantment on a dagger you'll never actually use as a weapon).

Lots of uses, really.

I use lower charge Soul Gems for Recharging my weapons. It is a benefit that it takes two or three to fully charge a weapon as you get credit towards the skill increase each time you recharge, not how much you recharge each time.

However, I never use less than a Grand Gem with a Grand Soul to make an Enchantment.

A lesser gem fully charges the Blade Of Woe.

I recharge my items using lesser soul gems.... Sometimes i use grand and grater ones.. But now i have like.. 40 of lesser ones and i really need to get rid of them...

I think you can use ANY soul gem to recharge your items. It works for me well. I think i once used a common one.. Not sure.. I select stuff too quickly to read what I'm doing sometimes O.o lol

I use the smallest soul gem's (petty & lesser ) first to recharge my weapon's as CCNA said each soul gem count's towards skill increases, plus they are easy to find, easy to fill.

Before I leave the house I go thru the weapons inventory and start with petty, to top off anything that brings up the old "R2" (ps3).

Also before I leave the house I make sure to store any full Grand/Black soul gems, so that I don't use them by mistake to charge weapons during battle.

Now if you're talking soul gem fragments, those are truly worthless; I don't even pick them up. Just pretty colors to make you go, "what was that??"

I expect that you don't know that you can go lower in the list when recharging? Easy mistake as they don't have an arrow indicating the list is longer than 3 options. Hell, I never knew that there were more than 3 options in the dialog boxes when creating a Fallout: New Vegas character. Untill about 6 months later.

I always pick them up, and place them into the little tray-thing next to the Arcane Enchanter in Proudspire Manor. Gives the illusion that I do a lot of enchanting there, which I do actually.

To me, finding lesser soul gem or petty soul gem is super exciting. It means a 3000 banish dagger I can sell at a store for 1000 septims. and something that will help me level up my enchanting skill. Which is the most important thing for the most part of the early middle game.

Fragment's pretty much are useless but I still pick them up, then put them on a "shallow bowl", usually in one of the dimmer corner's as they do give off a very faint glow.

Might as well use petty soul gems for muffle and waterbreathing.

Want to go broke? Buy filled gems, or Great and Grand gems.

Want to get rich? Buy up all the unfilled petty lesser and common gems you can get your hands on and fill them yourself.
Then enchant items with them, and sell them.

i also use the smaller soul gems for recharging.

they also come in handy for enchantments that do not improve with a larger soul gem

like muffle and waterbreathing.

If you have like 23 petty gems in your inventory, doesn't do that the same enchanting then when you use a Greater soul gem or a Black sould gem.

BTW, does anyone knows where to find Black soul gems? The only person i know who sells them is Fallion in Morthal, but he usually doesn't have more than 1 BSG and he doesn't seem to stock that often. I need BSG urgently and any help is welcome. Thanks.

You use them to catch petty etc souls, so they don't waste your greater or common gems on petty or lesser souls.
They recharge weapons as well as any other gem.

They're not good for enchanting, but they're fine for recharging.
