There really isn't an objective "good dps" for any weapon. They highest is also based on multiple factors. In the end, you should get it as high as possible.

Of course there are a lot of factors to take into consideration here. I think I made myself unclear in the OP.

Let me try again - in other words, what is a good base DPS shotgun that you guys run into?

Yes, mostly two skills, its the rifleman and the gun nut, you can however find better guns than you could mod if lucky or fighting hard enemies.

You want an combat shotgun so you don't have to reload every 2 shots.

Range it short so I would not do anything who reduced it mor even if it increased damage.
Explosive or bleed legendary is devastating on shotguns.

Combat shotgun is the only one worth keeping, after you get one. Double barrelled shotgun is just too slow to reload in hectic combat. Base DPS is irrelevant. Working DPS is all about the perks and mods you get for it. And legendary affixes, if you get lucky.

Aren't there like, only two shotguns in the game? You have the double-barreled shotgun and the combat shotgun. I'd say the clear answer is the one that is more than two shots.

Neverending Double Barrel Shotgun...

Never needs to stop and reload, and You can sell every other Ammunition type besides Your AT&T food to buy Shotgun Shells.

Shotguns, for me have always been a mid to close range weapon, so I don't mind sacrificing some range for more damage.

My modded gun, shotshine does 174, but I have rifleman 4. No legendary prefixes. Does pretty well for me.

Kneecapper reward that cripples target's leg. It effectively kills deathclaws ...

I've had a two-shot affix on a combat shotgun, and the damage (with full perks) something like 324 or there abouts, not counting suppressor and ninja perk. I didn't use it much tho, since I was a sniper build, so I stayed at long range if possible. Still useful to ambush enemies at corners tho inside buildings :)

Anyways, good dps is depending on level and level of enemies. Just keep it as modded as you can get, and you can't really do anymore besides that (other than perks, but that's a given)

The explosive shotgun and Le Fusil Terribles are my two favorite shotguns in the game. Le Fusil Terribles I believe has the highest base damage. The explosive combat shotgun has the explosive damage though, which ultimately makes it way more powerful. The explosive shotgun is arguably the most overpowered gun in the game. A lot of people really like the bleeding combat shotgun too.

This. It's ironic that the DB has one of the highest refire rates among weaponry in game, not that one could possibly click fast enough, even binding fire to the mouse wheel scroll (not sure if that can be done, actually.)

Of course, the neverending legendary is probably the only legendary that would make the DB better than the combat shotgun, but good luck finding a DB with neverending on it without a little cheating/modding. Likewise though, a combat shotgun with neverending is like "why?" You get an 8 round mag, a 12 round mag... then a 32. I don't think I've ever run a 32 dry in the middle of combat once.

Every shotgun is good if you find a way to use it effectively. Atm I have lots of fun running around with double barrel sawn-off shotgun and blasting everything and everyone in extremely close range (sawn-off range is like 17 or so).

I pump some overdrive and bufftats in my bloodstream and limbs just seem flying around me when I enter combat and those crits start going off. But it sure does help that I'm in a T-51 PA suit (so behind 2 inches of steel basically).
