What happened to the "High res textures" that Bethes

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 5:06 pm

I have all settings on high/ultra and I notice a lot of textures in the game look like they belong in a game from 5 years ago and not Skyrim, considering all the hype behind it.

There's a post here on Destructoid http://www.destructoid.com/skyrim-pc-mods-textures-no-64-bit-version-205403.phtml where they claim that "Bethesda promised Higher res textures, larger render modes and a bunch of other effects, which you can take to mean that the game will appear significantly more gorgeous on your computer than your console."

Well I would hate to see what the console version looks like then.

Here's a few examples of textures in game that make me shake my head...

Look at this table:

The blurry woodgrain of this shield:

These 8 bit looking shadows throughout the game are horriblly distracting:(yes shadow detail's on max setting).

More inexcusable slop:

And yes all texture details are maxed. You can't get blood from a rock when it comes to being supplied with lousy lo res textures to begin with.

Honestly, with all the errors it's been having since the launch I'd rather just get it to work before I get high res textures.

when you eventually get to play the game, these things do start to Show up, and makes you wonder

A ) rush job on the PC version, wich will be patched shortly after

B ) rush job on the PC version, wich wont be solved, ie left to modders

C ) works as intended

ill go ahead and pick A for the time being

Yes....i still have hope

Yeah i agree.Where are the high res textures u said bethesda.By now i feel like playing minecraft.
[censored] engine [censored] company [censored] graphical games i will not recommend to any of my friends about this game and your company.Your game requires a power rig which i have but with minecraft graphics and worse performance than anything ive played so far.Curse u to never create a game again cause what u do is ruining ips.
You better sell this ip to blizzard they know how to create pc games and not console games.

It's threads like these that kills PC gaming unfortunately. You're also shooting yourself in the foot by demanding these things even if I agree it had been nice with higher res. But all this does is to show PC gamers are bunch of whiners.

care to explain yourself?

If people make Promises, and yes they actually promised us High fidelity Textures
and they do not deliver?

by comparison, you decide to buy a porsche, the dealer said he would make sure its a red one with black Leather interiour

You are about to Receive the car, when you notice its a Blue one, with Plastic Interiour, now i dont know about you but i would stop and think for a moment
and then probably rage

You're playing on 1280x1024 and you want hi res textures? Try building a computer that uses hardware released in the last 4 years and then come back and talk.

BTW if you want to fix those shadow maps (not shadow textures) edit your .ini file to 4096

The textures can use some work, but its most likely Modders will give us some candy

That doesn't fix the shadows.

Are you sure your graphics settings in your GPU control panel are set to "QUALITY" instead of performance? I had a very similar issue in Dragon Age: Origins when I had my mipmap details set to performance, changing it to quality made everything look beautiful.

Protip, it doesnt matter WHAT RESOLUTION I'm going to be playing at, certain textures in game like the ones I showed are supplied in the files as is and they look like crap out of the gate. If you increase the resolution, a bad quality texture is just going to look WORSE. If I have texture level set to max level, then that is what the game uses to decide whether it's going to display a high res or low res texture, not your resolution.

I'm really let down. This isn't 2005. The consoles aren't powerful enough, so be it, BUT DON'T HOLD US BACK LIKE THIS. Looking at the textures up close is like a slap in the face. Not to mention the 60degree FOV. Junk.

I'm guessing it's more that 90% of their QA was done on the Xbox 360 version leaving the PC version largely untested than a rush job, or they tested it on a bunch of PCs with identical hardware.

Also, at first I was rolling my eyes at the eight bit shadows comment... then I saw the image and the shadows look like a bunch of large black pixels and understood.

What does 1280x1024 have to do with it?

Set to Ultra, running on a gtx 580, i7 980x, 12gb ram, 1920x1080.......................

Yeah explain that and while you're at it blame it on his 1280x1024... cause even if you were running at 800x600 this would still look like crap.

You can hardly tell what the hell it is in the first image.

There is no way in the world that they tested the PC version that much, the UI alone SCREAMS 'last minute don't give a [censored]'.

Yeah I'm tired of PC games being dragged down by their console versions. Just because console gamers have been using the same machine for 6 years doesn't mean the rest of us don't have new hardware BEGGING to be fed something other than UDK.

To be honest i wouldnt even doubt that they do this stuff intentionally. I know someone from Bethesda has gone on record recently in an interview stating how the PC development is a headache and the threat of piracy is more in your face. For them to intentionally keep disappointing the PC crowd so we just give up, and the next TES installment is justifiably console only because the PC market has dried up...well that scenario to me isn't really that much of a stretch.

The textures were an issue for me too, for the first 20 mins. Then i get lost in the game and addicted.

I do hear what you're saying though, what was promised wasn't delivered in that aspect.

At first I was confused about what the folk are complaing about as I didnt' think the textures were
bad at all on my system. I run ULTRA settings at 1920x1200.

In fact I was tabbed out here reading this thread and shaking my head wondering WTF.

Then I popped back in the game and saw what the issue is and why I had not noticed it.

See, i run around almost everywhere in 3rd person mode. In that mode even the snow boulder shots
that fellow posted look pretty good to my bleary eyes. NOt great but good enough. Most textures appear
better than default textures I recall seeing in Fallout New Vegas.

Then I switch to first person.

It does look horrible in first person. It is hard to say but I almost suspect a bug at work here.
It is as if when in first person a lower grade set of textures are used, or it could just be the 'zooming ' effect
makes em show all the ugly low resolution in its glory.

ANother thing dawned on me as I type this. In my system I had set FOV to 90 degrees.
That alters 3rd person quite a bit and might have a effect of making things look better.

Bottom line, yeah, I agree the textures are pretty cheesy. LOL.
But I'm not overly bothered as I write this as I , am a 3rd person type player. I only go into 1st person as situation merits.
So I dont' see the cheese.
I also know this can be fixed by the community of modders in due course.

Course I knew going in to expect this as it is a Bethesda game and they design things around the gameboy platforms. Period.
I hate to say it, but in certain areas of their game design I have LOW expectations and it might help me to avoid overt suprise
at the situation.

As for the jerks yelling down those that point out the Emperor has no clothes on, you are all sounding like mindless
fanbois.

If it's a bug I wish they would at least say something already. If its not, and they just have a different opinion of what a high res texture is than 99% of gamers, then they should state that as well.
