What spells have you found to be most effective in Skyrim ?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 1:18 am

In oblivion I think Electricity was one of the better spells, killed almost everything. But in Skyrim I have yet to decide on a Destruction spell ? I duel cast, fire as a staple, but change out Ice and Elctric. Also which 1 Spell is your favorite in Skyrim ??

Grand Healing. Can't use destruction if you are dead. As for destruction, Incinerate for me, unless there are a whole bunch of enemy mages, when Wall of Storms gets some serious use.

Chain lightining was pretty handy while I was low enough a level for it to still be effective since it hits nearby targets. Plus the master level storm spell is great for those persky flying dragons. You can essentially laser-beam them out of the sky with ease. Never found ice based spells to be that effective, unless I was over-run by multiple enemies and needed to slow a few down while backpeddling. Even then I found it easier just to blast away with lighting and dish out the pain.

I'm currently dual wielding Fireball as a Level 33 Destruction/Restoration Mage as I'm not totally impressed with the Lightning spells. I'm considering the idea of becoming a more well rounded mage so I'm looking to add Conjuration and Illusion into my bag of tricks, but am curious which spells would give me most bang for buck so to speak....anyone have any ideas????

Lightning has to be treated like a single shot pistol in an FPS game. Imagine if you will your character making a finger gun and going ZAP! Fireball has the advantage of splash damage, but its also a penalty if someone is very close to you. Lighting has the advantage of no travel time, where as both ice and fire have travel time to the target.

Conjuring up a Dremora Lord and backing him up with Icy Spear or Fireball is a winning combo for my battlemage. Also helps that he's wearing the Dragon Priest mask, Morokei (100% faster magicka regeneration), a ring which gives him 100% faster regen, and master robes (150%) to go with his 300 magicka points.

I like Chain Lightning cause i can hit enemies behind walls, or while i'm hidden. Is very cool. I like Ice Storm too, pretty effect!

Edit: We are talking about any spells!? FRENZY - Surely counting Mayhem here - FTW!

When it comes down to "effectiveness" all the monsters seem to end up dead no matter what I do. I prefer "fun" to "effective".

Harmony. With the right perks, that spell works on almost every creature in the game. Actually, that's true of all three Master-level Illusion spells.

Thanks for the info bigraj...I'm presently wearing the Archmage robe and Morokei's mask for the quicker regen. With all my gear on (amulets, etc) my magicka is in the 340-350 range. Was the ring of regeneration a reward or did you purchase and craft into its present state.

I just got Summon Arniel's Shade recently and it is pretty insane - 0 magicka cost and he does pretty decent damage. The only slightly annoying thing about it is that it requires dual-cast for some reason...

With proper magicka usage reductions Incinerate was my most used spell. The extra damage to enemies on fire was helpful and I typically prefer fire spells anyway. Chain Lightning was incredibly helpful against multiple enemies or enemies that moved around a lot as it would sort of auto target them if you were aiming close to their location. Seemed appropriate as lightning looks for a way to ground itself anyway. I could easily do the whole game with just those two.

I bought it at Radiant Raiment when I stopped in to sell some enchanted jewelery. My character was around lvl 54 at the time (58 now), so that may have something to do with it being available, although I did find a ring in a dungeon that gave 40% faster magic regen when he was in the mid 40s.

Mana regen enchants are a bit of a waste of time due to the rather stupid nature of the regen rates in combat. Your better off going for casting cost reduction and making some zero casting gear. The added bonus with that is that magic items with enchants in the same school as your zero casting gear have infinite charges, so need to worry about rechargning them at all.

I mostly use flame. Since almost everything has resitance to cold or frost I find it most effective.
