What is the best enchantment for a weapon?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:06 pm

Water Breathing as a learnable enchant seems to appear at lower levels, Paralyse is one that I have only found in a vendors inventory.
Volkskygge always has an item with a Water Breathing enchant, but the prior owner does not like being woken up, Dragon Priests are wierd like that.<--- You can just walk up a hill to the Word Wall and avoid the actual Dungeon.

Yeah. ...on both of my characters...like before I found Waterbreathing ones. Don't hate me because my character is beautiful.

Do you check shops or just hope to find them?

I have been checking shops lately since I started paying attention to enchantments. I already upgraded my SoulReaper? to have fiery soul trap instead of the regular one. :)
I check every container (not to mention burial urn, lol) in every dungeon I go to, but alas, no dice.
I'd much rather find it than just console it in, that's no fun. :run:

I've had the best luck at War Maiden's, the Blacksmith in Riften, and Radiant Raiment. Others have mentioned that Riverwood Traders is also a good spot. Also, while in Solitude you can check the blacksmith and Bits 'n Pieces and while in Riften you can check Grelka and Pawned Prawn. It's probably just random coincidence, but those are where I found Waterbreathing, Sneak, and Pickpocketing gear to disenchant after I gave up hoping to find them. :P

I usually use a fire enchantment since I find it the most overall useful. Once I get it, an Absorb Health is very nice. That one is good for followers since it helps keep them in the fight. Paralysis is also good.

Also, the less you have to hit someone, the less your 1H skill goes up. So that could be annoying.
Sort of. Unlike the previous games, it's the more damage you do that increases your skills. So if you deal 1000 damage on someone who has 200 health, you're getting 200 health's worth of experience.

Oooooo, I may have to try this. How do you get your followers to use the bows you give them? Annekke and Mjoll won't use the bows I give them and I didn't notice if Lydia did.

It may be that something has changed because I made a high damage soul-trap bow for Lydia again tonight and she immediately equipped it but when she shot arrows, it was with her default hunting bow. She didn't do that before recent patches. I don't have a problem with her using a soul-trap battleaxe though and she collects plenty of souls that way while I can stay back and shoot arrows with my soul-trap bow. We get so many that the weight adds up and we have to stash them. Lydia seems to like two-handed weapons. Tonight she had the Dwarven Greatsword of Reaping I think it was and was absorbing all kinds of Stamina.

My most difficult enchanted item to find is still boots of muffle so I can disenchant them and make my own with my favorite boots. Those Drainspell/heart/blood weapons that you can get along the way to the battle with Morokei in Labyrinthian are absorb weapons and I think it's the battleaxe that absorbs health.

I would like to get an absorb health enchantment going on my main blade. I have the health-absorbing Galdur Blackblade, which sits in Proudspire on a wall under Red Eagle's Fury, but I'd prefer to keep it as a memento. Same for the Blade of Woe. I have yet to find a regular weapon with that enchantment anywhere as loot. Have you guys been lucky enough to find one?
You can sometimes buy them. They have names like "of Leeching" or "Vampire Blade." If you do the mage college quest line, you get a ton of them in one dungeon.

For balance and utility I like Fiery Soul trap + Absorb Health.
I find paralyze too powerful on anything unless it's a poison I can apply only when I really need it. The Fire perk in the enchantment tree is the first damage one, as well, so fewer perk points needed.

I could've sworn that she equipped the Legendary Ebony bow I gave her, but she may have been using the Hunting one like Mjoll and Annekke. :o

I ended up finally having to buy some because I never found any. <_< I think I finally found them in Riften, but it could've been Solitude.

Hmm, I've done the College quests, do you have the name of said dungeon so I can go back and see if there are any laying about or newly spawned baddies to thwart?

It was in Labyrinithian. The spectres in there drop Drainbows and Drainblades.

I just want to point out that there are a lot of creatures and NPCs that are strong against frost damage. Nords make up a large percentage of NPCs and then there's the forsworn who are pretty much nords by a different name. Lots of animals with thick fur who shrug off frost damage like bears and mammoths. Using frost spells against a frost troll is an exercise in futility.

As for creatures that are weak against frost damage... well there's the flame atronach that you come across once in a blue moon. Can't think of any others. It might be good to use against dragons to slow them down a bit.

No creatures particularly weak against shock damage but none strong against it either so it's a good all around enchantment to use.

That pretty much leaves fire damage for killing stuff quickly.

This is very effective combo. The reason I do not use paralyze is that it's too effective and it makes the game too boring for me.

This^. The acquisition of Chillrend on my first playthrough was a thing of greatness---at first. But soon I realized that unless I was really careless, it ended the competitive phase of the game for me.

But that's just me; I'm basic. I still like Fire. It's effective against the widest variety of enemies and continues to do damage after you hit someone with it.

However, if the OP is looking for the best weapon enchantment I think someone already covered it: Paralyze + Stamina Absorption = Game Over. Of course one needs to be able to find both of those enchantments and have 100 in enchanting + all the requisite perks. And by the time you'd get there, you probably wouldn't need such a weapon to win battles. This brings to mind the Master Difficulty thread but that's another topic to be discussed in a different place.

The forsworn are actually Bretons, so they have a flat +25% magic resistance

I'd go with Shock spells myself - noone is particularly resistant to it (other than storm atronachs).

I'm gonna' have to cast Pacify on them next time I come across them to see if they're actually smaller. :P

Are they all Bretons or have some Nords joined them because I'm sure I've heard them say, "Skyrim belongs to the Nords..." and it wasn't in Mjoll's accent.

They're primarily Breton, but they are racially mixed, the Breton blood is just most prevalent. People don't really think of them as actual Breton though, just that they share the same ancestors. If you look at a map of Tamriel, The Reach borders the eastern part of High Rock, so one can assume that in the long ago beforetime, Breton that were either deep-seeded in the old ways move to The Reach and just never lost the knack for it after the Nords occurred. In fact, the Nords taking their land probably pushed them further into the old ways.

A lot of the Forsworn chicks do have make-up (or warpaint) similar to Muiri. I'm still curious about their heights and want to check it.

Is it ever mentioned in the game (via NPC dialogue) that the Forsworn are Bretons or from High Rock? I believe you that The Reach borders High Rock and I saw on Wikia that they are Bretons, but I'm just wondering if I'm forgetting something else that was said in the game.

Here's my Breton Kiir Srinna standing with Lydia. The difference in size with the women is no small thing, heh. Kiir feels safer with Lydia around for sure. Reanimating a Forsworn and standing next to them would work also.

They mention that they share the same ancestors but they're not one-in-the-same. And yeah, Muiri is a Reachwoman, so she has adorninments similar to theirs.

Oh, yeah. My assassin chick married Muiri and when she and Mjoll stand next to Muiri she almost looks like a Halfling.

Well, that's just barbaric.

A "Reachwoman"? Is that anything like the Pivot Man in...NVM. :P

They share enough similarity for the chef in Markath keep to say "I was born and raised in High Rock! I'm NOT a reachman!" or something like that :)

Mechanics-wise, they share the magic resistance as well.

:tes:

Yes. Sword (1h) drains stamina, axe (2h) absorbs health, and bow absorbs magicka. All three are 15 point drains, and are unusually light weapons of it looks like Glass-level damage.
As for your Nord and Breton pic... try an Altmer (of either gender) next to a Breton female. Tallest vs. shortest.

Is it ever mentioned in the game (via NPC dialogue) that the Forsworn are Bretons or from High Rock? I believe you that The Reach borders High Rock and I saw on Wikia that they are Bretons, but I'm just wondering if I'm forgetting something else that was said in the game

I'm not sure; but there is a passing reference in the book The "Madmen" of the Reach.
It is this incongruity that led me to Markarth, the capital city of the Reach, in search of answers. There, I met one of the native peoples, an old woman who preferred to not be named in my writings. She told me of her family's long history. How she believes they originally came from High Rock, home of the Bretons (which would explain the similar faces and stature of the two peoples).

Pocket Guide to the Empire 1st Edition: High Rock identifies them as even more mixed-race than Bretons already are:
The Reachmen are a mongrel breed, even for Bretons. Descended originally from one of the earliest Atmoran tribes to settle Tamriel, their lineage now partakes of nearly every race imaginable. The uprising that finally "freed" the Western Reach ended in the extermination of the Aldmeri overlords, but Elven blood still flows strong in the Reachmen, and they share the secretive, haughty demeanor of that race.

Finally, Pocket Guide identifies the Reach as having been part of High Rock:
This rebellion was not a coordinated effort, however, and while most of High Rock was freed from Elven tyranny by 1E500, parts of the province remained under Elven rule for much longer. The Western Reach, paradoxically, was one of the last bastions of the Aldmeri in High Rock, the legacy of which is still apparent today (see below).
