What's the best time to start Dawnguard

I had to erase a character and I'm like LVL 8 right now. I dunno if I should wait till I'm level 40 or something or start it once I reach level 10. what are your opinions?

Is it better to be vampire or Dawnguard?

I say wait becuz i am doing that right now and it is super hard u have to save like every 5 sec and ypu have to... HAVE TO have a follower or you a screwed...
