What's The Point Of Buying A Horse?

Since you can summon one now? Renders regular horses useless.

Characters with no magical skill, such as pure warriors, wouldn't be able to summon Arvak, so regular horses still have their purpose.

I usually get frost or become friends with the owner of the Solitude Stable. I don't buy them. Don't usually use them either. Immersion. Cop out, but some people get immersed by these small things. Myself included.

Why? What level do you need conjuration at?

Only stable horses can make sweet lemonade. Anyways, it's good for role playing characters.

Still don't know why beth just didn't have it as lesser power instead of a conjuration spell. But it only requires 120 magicka to summon. If a warrior wants to summon arvak all he needs to do is to invest in magicka twice.

Not buying them is immersive? I don't get it?

It's an Adept-level spell and takes a decent amount of Magicka to cast.

Did you mean the Riften stables? I didn't know you could befriend the Solitude stable owner. One of the earliest things I do is go down to Riften and beat up Horse-Crusher. An ideal horse: doesn't cost anything and if it dies you just go back to the stable and get another. Having a horse early on is a great way to avoid trouble, just run away!

You also need a conjuration skill of at least 50. Pure warrior wouldn't be near that.

Not entirely true. I have a level 61 Beserker with 100 magicka. Only takes 80 to summon. :D

Mods aside (I have several horses for different companions at times), I always buy a horse as soon as I can. It simply 'feels right' to be trotting around on a horse looking down at people, rather than legging it with the peasants. I prefer to travel from point A to point B, rather than fast travel, because you get more contacts and fights, and you see more, but I don't like dawdling along on foot.

I'm a pc'er, so I do use mods, and for a role player, that simply adds a lot more horse wise, such as loading gear on them, commanding them, etc.

Man! I would love that ability in game. Saddle bags, maybe equipment hangers/sheathes on the saddle. Command your horse to stay and not wander, whistle for him to come if he's near, slap him on the rump to make him return "home".

*sigh*....

It's really handy Cail. I have all my camping gear and odds and sods loaded on it. Extra armour or clothes, those weapons you never use but carry around 'just in case', and a stock of potions, food, etc. It means I can carry something more realistic equipment wise while still carting around the other stuff.

Skyrim is the first game I've ever modded, and to be honest, I wouldn't go back now.

I never even bothered with horses to tell the truth. For me they were pointless because of fast travel. Even with mounted combat now I still don't use horses. Not even Shadowmere.

I couldn't summon Arvak as I didn't have enough magicka, and when I raised my magicka so I could summon him, he just disappeared after I got off. I think I'm gonna stay with Shadowmere.

Is that a glitch?

Some people role play that their character does not use magic. This still gives them an option. I personally never use a horse.

Is fast-travel faster if you're mounted on a horse?
Is fast-travel faster in lighter armor and/or with less encumbrance?

Dawnguard added one free horse to the two that were already available for free through quests. It didn't make buying horses any more pointless than it already was.

Characters are not aware of Arvak's existence (same goes for Frost and Shadowmere), and therefore will buy horses if needed.
At least that's how I see it. Characters will decide not to buy a horse only if they don't need one, not because they magically know that a free horse exists in another realm or a city far away.
