What's the point of Dual Wield?

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 12:56 am

I played a dual wield character lately and I didn't like it too much.
What's the point of it? I tried to use both weapons by left-/rightclicking all the time, but it makes no sense somehow, except if someone is blocking.
I think 2H > DW.
Anyone able to confute me?

On one weapon you can have health drain, or magic drain. on the other you can have another enchant.

Or swing them both together for more damage.

Duel wielding has the highest damage output. That is fact. Does't mean its the best though.

I quite like my Dualwielder, I have less protections but on the other hand my offense is better. And nost importantly it does look nice as an assassin to dualwield daggers

Play more of the game before posting topics is my advice. You'll find Dual Weild more powerful in dual chops and power attacks. I currently do 630 damage with Dual Chop Daedric Maces. Drawbacks are it decreases mobility during attacks and you can easily miss. You get no blocking. I find it's good to switch from Dual to Single depending on the fight.

Dual wielding works the best if you hang back a bit at first, let the enemies focus on your tank companion if you have one. If not then you'll need to invest in some lifestealing enchants on your weapons. Once you get heavily armoured with some vampiric weapons it rocks.

Uhm, I played that character 10 hours, with already having played the game with a 2H Axe Character for about 50 hours. Maybe it does the most damage, but it feels cheesy somehow.
With my 2H Axe I killed faster than with my DW Warrior.

It's fun. That's the only reason needed.

I prefer 1h+shield myself actually, but still.

^Yep. The point is that some people really enjoy it. Personally, I don't enjoy dual-wielding or two-handed weaponry. One-handed with a shield all day for me. But tastes differ, so I'm glad there're options.

Ten hours in a ES game is like 10 minutes of another game. Once you have the perks selected in DW you dmg output is far greater then 2H.

Confute. Nice word use! :)

I like dual wield because it looks cool. I am less of a scientist with this game than some. I usually only use dual wield bound swords if I want to do some melee. I play a mage character at the moment and like the huge variety of gameplay available.

I can't confute you but I don't really want to either. I just wanted to post a reply so I could also use confute in a sentence. :D

Edit: Are you a crossword fan? I hope I remember that word when we next play Upwords.

You mean besides looking awesome, making my character even more badass and dealing huge amounts of damage? No, other than that there is no point :flamethrower:

If you focus on your one handed perks and get the dual flurry and dual savagery it really makes it worth it.

Dual wielding works best for stealth character , the power attack is a short combo that deals a lot of damage (DB gloves , smithing , 2 enchants on each dagger , sneak bonus x30 etc ) , more than 2H weapons .

When out of stealth you have to be mobile to avoid the enemy' s blows cause you can't block , with sword and shield usually it's better to stand still to have the standing attack bonus of the one hand tree perk called savage strike

DW is much faster than 2h, with the speed improvements, and yes, you can do normal atacks with both weapons at the same time, I think what you are saying is that you think you can only do normal atacks with 1 weapon at a time.

The DW power atack is inaccurate as you say locked in once place, but for that I use "Become Ethereal" to get close to the opponent then once im close enough usually they start atacking and staying still, and thats when I pull off the 1 shotter. Not only is the dual wielding power atack faster, but gets a 50% damage boost as well.

And as someone else mentioned, enchanting 2 different weapons can be quite fun, like placing a stamina drain on one, and a magicka drain on another one - or paralyze/blood drain, plenty of combinations you can come up with

I don't like dual wield because of the lack of a defensive stance. I use it only when I want to double the sneak damage, then switch to shield for the rest of the fight.

Hm, well maybe I should train my sneak more.
I will keep on it, still have that savegame, but at the moment I changed to Mage :D.

Btw, I only changed from 2H to DW because my first save got lost after 50h when my HDD gave up.
But that offtopic :P.

You will easily get a lot power out compared to two-handed weapons. But a two-hander can also block. I would choose dua-wield before a two-hander though.

Dual-wielding daggers when doing a sneak attack is also a very good way to kill those hard guys who normally don't die from one sneak attack. (just do a dual-power attack and you get three power attack sneak attacks in with high enough sneak skill, too little sneak and the?'ll see you before the first hits)

I think it's the same reason why people like to dual wield pistols; it looks cool.

The more anolytical answer, should you not be convinced with mine.

Might as well ask, "What's the point of fighting?" It's a character choice.

Either is viable... in the end, the target dies. Why is everyone so concerned about what choice is "best"? This isn't a competition.

This.

I didnt start dual wielding till my one handed skill was high.....sword and boarded it till then. Then I started dual wielding and have really enjoyed it. The dual wield power attack is pretty cool, same with the stance. I have only had this finishing move happen once but found it really cool....I sliced the guys leg, he went down to his knees then I scissored off his head with my two swords just like Russel Crow did in Gladiator.

Dual Wielding is effectively giving up defense for more attack, it's not really realistic to be able to block with dual wielded weapons and even parrying is not too easy given that parrying a heavier incoming weapon is not as easy as people would think and that dual wielding 2 long swords is very encumbering... so in reality dual wielders have very little defense thus why depictions of it are generally unrealistic. There have been some dual wielding styles but they are usually short swords in the main hand and a parrying dagger in the off-hand. Skyrim lacks both short swords and parrying daggers... so...

Parrying daggers can stab of course, but are more aimed for deflecting weapons, that said a buckler is more suitable for that type of combat, bucklers act both for deflection and are used to punch, most games will never actually show that bucklers are designed to be used as a punching weapon and just stick them in only as small shields.
