What if they just prevented spell effect stacking?

No more 100% resists, no more 100% reduced mana cost, no more full fortify smithing gear+fortify smithing potion, etc. etc. The game could just only use the highest you've got active.

Would force people to use a bit more varied enchants, making it more interesting to decide what to put on your gear.

I'm boggled they did not go with this fairly obvious fix to the past abuses a long time ago.

Why?
You don't need to use that

Or, you could simply not use stacked enchantments?

I don't really see the problem. Stacking school spell cost reduction means you are not stacking something else. Ultimately, you are still making a choice.

I found stacked enchantments (at least in regular play) to demonstrate their weaknesses quite well.

I'd bought a 30% fire resist Elven shield sometime in the teens. It was handy, but still not overdone.

Then I found 50% fire resist Elven boots in a chest. Yeah! Woohoo! This is awesome! :D

My first blood dragon was trivial - he breathed fire. Walk in the park. Felt like the Big Man On Campus.

And then I ran into a frost Blood Dragon. And was quickly reminded that 80% fire resist really doesn't do a damn thing against ice.
(The high level Ice Mage boss, spamming Ice Spike at me also helped hammer in the point. Heh.)

But, like I said - this is "regular" play. Not using 100+perks Enchanting plus enchant bonus gear and potions to max out every piece of gear with two strong effects.

Mages gotten used to 0 mana cost spells would probably launch a few fireballs in your direction :celebration:
I would definitely go for at least one enchant being resist magic.

I am simply not using a great number of things in the game because they're imbalanced. I'm avoiding entire skills due to them. I'd like to not have to avoid so many things due to balance issues, I'd like to be able to try to improve my character as much as I can without having to worry about ruining the game for myself if I make him too powerful because they left so many exploits it's hard to divide things up into exploit and non-exploit.
