What do you like most about Dishonored?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 11:56 am

I'm writing an article figure out why Dishored has become so popular, beside the amazing cg trailer, so post why you like Dishonored here.

Example - Dishonored is the first mission based game that allows you to have many diffident ways to complete the mission.

I will post any good responses at dishonored.blogspot.com

The open nature of the missions is the main thing I look forward to with Dishonored. However, it's not the first game to do this, the Deus Ex series, the Thief series, Hitman series and Death to Spies series, to mention a few, already did this.

It's good to give the game publicity and all but please try to go with facts above everything else. Yes, the game became a little more popular but not all that much so it's still kind of niche. And it's not the first game to take this approach to level design and mission structure.

So this is a pick one survey. Solomon had an easier task!

The Chaos system---I think it's the right direction to head for implementing morality in a game as opposed to the stale binary good/bad, red/blue illusion of choice and consequence. In that model, there's always a naked gamey motive for every decision you make and you don't want to deviate or mix it up because it dilutes potential growth. Or I, in any event, have a hard time separating my meta-game "this is good for me because..." as opposed to actual roleplaying who I want my character to be. There's definite failure in part on my end, but even if I disregard meta-benefits the game doesn't recognize me trying to make a gray or neutral/self-serving character. It's openly tabulating good and bad. The effects in this game are invisible at first beyond the obvious notion that if you kill someone the world is affected. There's overt effects but covert implications in the moral sense. I hope that was comprehensible.

I like Dishonored because of what it represents; a shining light of originality in a sea of super serious "alpha tango" shooters and third person chest-high-wall simulators. It's a new IP, set in an original and imaginative world. It displays complexity and intelligence in a time when most games seem to be losing features as they are "streamlined" for an audience that apparently can't think for themselves. While many of our beloved stealth franchises are mistreated (see Splinter Cell Blacklist and that atrocious mark and execute mechanic), Dishonored looks to preserve every element that we cherish in stealth games and even give us new ones.

It's a throwback, for me, to the older games I used to play. Ones with with choice on missions and a whole slew of powers and abilities which I would spend most of my time in the game pineing over.

I like it because of its design philosophy. It uses simulation and intelligently designed powers and levels to accomplish its goals. These games let the player feel like a genuine co-author of the game, and not just a monkey jumping through arbitrary hoops that the developers have set up.

I believe people take interest in "Dishonored" for one very simple reason. Its different. We havent seen a decent stealth based game in....forever. And even the greats that we have seen (MGS series, Hitman Series, Assassins Creed series) are absolutely nothing like Dishonored. While i may have only been loosely following this game since it showed up on the "Game Informer" magazine cover awile back, i must say that it is the only game thats genuinely grasped my attention for quite some time. From the possession of fish (excellent idea might I add) to the overall great look of the game, it has made this game nearly impossible for me to ignore. I hope I answered the question well and wish the best of luck to Arkane Studios and the always great Bethesda team.

It's stylization. Everything from the great artistic direction right down to the more insignificant elements in the HUD. The world of Dishonored is amazing, as expected from my favorite art designer Viktor Antonov and the great art team over at Arkane. Everything that makes Dishonored stand out also deserves an honorable mention: The Mask, The Tall Boys, The Outsider and even the way Corvo holds his sword. All these things make Dishonored great for me and I am certain it will not disappoint graphically or gameplay wise.

the thing that peaked my interrest in the beginning, was the prospect of a new fps stealth game, and now i am looking forward to combining that mechanic with the different magical abilities. Furthermore i love all the different approaches you can take in order to complete your objectives, and i will most certainly play though this game several times.

It's being made by developers with a pedigree. They want to make the types of games that I want to play.

It's a new and fresh IP.

Well, my personal favorite aspect, while not what you are looking for, is the killed target notifier! It's awesome!
But, on topic, my favorite real part is that the game was designed less as a game, and more as a simulation, where you have full control. You are dropped in the level with weapons, abilities, and an objective, and you are free to go about the level however you would like.

I also really like the objective updater on the right side of the top corner. Overall the UI is really stylized.

The stealth genre needs a new good game, this looks like it could be it. Ny favourite feature that I have seen so far is the possession power.

Ehh, well the only real solid knowledge I have of it was from a preview around about a year ago, but I remember it well, as the originality of the premise stuck out quite vividly, despite the somewhat limited information released.

It mentioned things within the game were dynamic, not simple superficial effects but things that were "existing" articulable aspects that were wholly a part of the game world. That seemed novel, and I appreciate that attention to detail.

I am interested in its unique visuals and lore.

Mostly what got me hooked was the debut trailer and seeing Corvo. He seems like an interesting lead character, with some pathos.

I hope there is a mission where you have to assassinate someone at an opera. Just like how honest Abe bit the bullet...

That would be insanely fun. Getting to decide how you get in, taking out only the target, which is harder, or killing everybody, which is easier, but less moral and more chaotic. How would you kill the target? Coventional methods? Possess a friend of the target, get close to him, unpossess in privacy, kill the target, and blink up to the rafters or possess your way out? Ooh, if it was a play, maybe an actor has a gun, so you can possess the actor and shoot the target as the actor when on stage! Although, a scripted sequence like an opera might be hard to do dynamically and realistically. Also, the audience would have to be very convincing, which would be hard to do.

An opera level would be badass, but very difficult to achieve. So many possibilities...

But like Makatak said, the audience, the play, the scripting would all surely be very difficult to achieve.

It would just fit the world so well but like others have said, tough to pull off with so many bodies in one place at the same time. I can dream though. Like the play itself could have some sort of significance (it could be about you!) like a piece of poetic propaganda. After assassinating the target I want to Blink him onto the stage and tie him up by the rafters for the perfect moment when the curtains draw back revealing his defiled body to a gasping audience!
