What do you think about melee combat?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:02 pm

Hello.

Im huge fan of the Elder Scrolls Series, Ive played all of them and I have Skyrim on both Xbox and PC.

So far only thing what bothers me is melee combat. When you swing enemy with your weapon (1h or 2h) it feels like you are just swinging the air. The effect should be similar to block. When enemy is blocking with shield and you swing, you really feel the power and weight of weapon when it reacts the block. Hope you get what I mean.

Am I only one wondering this?

ps. I can only hope they will add this kind of thing in DLC or some patch.

A ton better than Morrowind, but still meh. It awesome when you play the game for the very first time and watch all the cool kill moves, however it all gets old rather quickly.

I hope one day they can release a game with at the very least the same combat as Dark messiah, That game perfected magic/melee/archery type combat , I dont see why bethesda couldnt just get rid of gamebyro and make their next game with a new engine

The engine works very well in my opinion on Skyrim, melee combat could just need "fix" with animations when you hit the target. Instead of swinging the air and only thing what makes you notice you hit the target is sound and some blood splatter.

Basically if you remove the blood and sound from melee swing. You dont even know did your swing hit the target <-- This is the thing I mean with melee combat.

Even tho im really happy they add new features with patches. Like 1.5 kill cams.
Bethesda also said: “on adding even more features with upcoming free updates and game add-on content"
This became pretty much off-topic but thanks for your time reading this far.

As some people have said, better than previous games, but not perfect. Melee has always had a weird feel to it, although I do like it in Skyrim

My biggest issue is that combat overall feels awfully heavy and unnatural. Sure when im using a big axe works fine. But when im using a small fast sword I feel like im glued in place while striking. I miss the mobility of other games(Not to mentioned the idiotic change of not being able to attack in air, OR jump during sprint)

Vaernima was here.

On the topic of melee combat in the game, I actually like it somewhat more than Oblivion's. Now that's what hitting air feels like. At least to me.

Skyrim's melee combat is fun. More fun than any TES game in the past, in fact.

EDIT: I do think some suggestions for future improvements are in order, though:

Enemies still do not respond as they should to each hit. Every time you hit someone, they should stagger realistically according to the direction of your swing. As it is, without the blood there's no way to really tell if you hit someone.

Death animations should be better. Much, much better. Most of the time when you kill an enemy they just ragdoll, and the times that they don't, the initial animation is bad and the point that they ragdoll is obvious. ie, they stumble around a little bit and then bounce around and collapse like a noodle.

One of my first ever posts on here was about the melee combat feeling bland so i know where your coming from.

I dont mind the combat but there are things i preferred about it in oblivion. There just seemed to be more impact in Oblivion,i think sound had a lot to do with it.When someone hit your shield for example you could really feel the blow and the accompanying sounds were really good.

Combat in Skyrim has grown on me but i wasnt impressed when i first played the game.

Exactly my point. Plus the player should react when he hits. Imagine you swing enemy to ribs. Sword keeps flowing past them like it was just a small cut. If you are close to enemy with 2 meters long greatsword and hit enemy. sword should stop when your swing hits enemys ribs. Not past it like you cut him. Im really bad to explain things...greetings from finland

you know, we should really skip all the wants and wishes and get right to the heart: a.i.

either ai isn't important or it can't be done in tes games. i don't want to contemplate other choices.

Compared to Mount & Blade, it's terrible,.. but then, Mount & Blade's combat system makes almost all action-RPGs that go for a realistic style of melee combat look bad.

Honestly, i'm absolutely fine with it (except for the finisher moves, which I can't stand). I've never really had a problem with the combat in any Elder Scrolls game. I'm just happy it's first-person, and would gladly take "bland" "floatey-feeling" first-person combat over some [censored] third-person only hack & slash crap with fruity slashes, rolls, and combos.

Melee combat... yeah its simple and i guess can get boring. I like it tho. It's what i expected out of TES game and it's actually better than i had expected. The one thing I think Beth did awesomely was Archery. But thats just my opinion.

The melee combat is not bad but that doesnt make it good for one thing swinging with a sword is a fairly bad way to use a sword.

What do I think of melee combat? It's hit or miss.

Hehe get it?

Seriously, though, I think the combat is just fine for an RPG. There's always room for improvements but, as far as first-person RPGs goes, I can't think of a single game that does it better. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is pretty much on par with Skyrim if you only consider melee combat.

Time will tell if the sequel or another game altogether will surpass it.

if the auto-deaths disappeared, would you care about the animations?

personally, i'm just not sure gamesas knows how to make a balanced game difficulty-wise.

they've had their chances to get rid of the extremes. and, except, for fallout3 and nv (they didn't do obviously) i don't see progression.

I sort of like the combat in Skyrim.

I agree that it's a little clunkier than it needs to be, for example not being able to swing while jumping or the physics of how your weapon reacts to hitting an enemy or an enemies' shield. Still, I feel like it gives me quite a few options to be strategic, like bashing with my shield or sword pommel to interrupt enemies' attacks, and the combat feels more satisfying because of the occasional 'kill cam' that will trigger from time to time, especially with some mods to add more kill animations. Though sometimes I do feel like the AI isn't smart enough, or mobile enough to provide much of a challenge.

I also thought that the combat in Oblivion was okay (just a less advanced Skyrim I guess, in terms of fighting)

And I also like Morrowind's combat. It had three different attacks, and depending on what weapon you used, it would change your style of fighting. With a spear I would always be moving backwards or forwards to get a 'Thrust', representing the footwork required to fight using a spear. Likewise a heavy chopping weapon required me to stand still to deliver my blow, as if I was squaring my feet and putting my strength into the brute force of using an axe or longsword. And if I wanted to 'slash' I had to be dancing back and forth, as if my character was trying to finesse or dodge a little.

But anyways, the moral of the story is that I think TES gets a bad rap for poor combat. For a first person RPG, and everything else you get I think it does its job and can be enjoyable if you give it a chance, no matter what TES game you happen to be playing.

1h & shield I really like.

2h weapons are TOO clunky for me. I ended up using less and less power swings because I was missing too much.

Right! I forgot to talk about this.

Basically, I feel that 2h weapons are a little too slow, maybe have too short a reach, and also make you too immobile. They aren't as fun to use as a sword and board and I wish there was some way to let you swing faster with them (if there is then I haven't found it).
