I sort of like the combat in Skyrim.
I agree that it's a little clunkier than it needs to be, for example not being able to swing while jumping or the physics of how your weapon reacts to hitting an enemy or an enemies' shield. Still, I feel like it gives me quite a few options to be strategic, like bashing with my shield or sword pommel to interrupt enemies' attacks, and the combat feels more satisfying because of the occasional 'kill cam' that will trigger from time to time, especially with some mods to add more kill animations. Though sometimes I do feel like the AI isn't smart enough, or mobile enough to provide much of a challenge.
I also thought that the combat in Oblivion was okay (just a less advanced Skyrim I guess, in terms of fighting)
And I also like Morrowind's combat. It had three different attacks, and depending on what weapon you used, it would change your style of fighting. With a spear I would always be moving backwards or forwards to get a 'Thrust', representing the footwork required to fight using a spear. Likewise a heavy chopping weapon required me to stand still to deliver my blow, as if I was squaring my feet and putting my strength into the brute force of using an axe or longsword. And if I wanted to 'slash' I had to be dancing back and forth, as if my character was trying to finesse or dodge a little.
But anyways, the moral of the story is that I think TES gets a bad rap for poor combat. For a first person RPG, and everything else you get I think it does its job and can be enjoyable if you give it a chance, no matter what TES game you happen to be playing.
