I have been hearing a lot of mixed feelings regarding the subscription fee. I for one, don't think it's a good thing. I have a lot of problems with it. First of all, is the price itself. $15 a month adds up to $180 a year....For ONE game. That, on top of my PS+ fee (I'm getting a PS4) is just ridiculous. The devs seem very confident in themselves, but I don't think they could ever pump out enough content for that to be worth it. They would have to make something equivalent to a $15 DLC every month of every year. Impossible.
Secondly, are my problems as an Elder Scrolls fan. My first Elder Scrolls was Skyrim, and I fell in love with the lore immediately. I never went back and played Morrowind, Oblivion, or any of the earlier titles, but I learned all I could about them. I have spent countless hours surfing links on the Elder Scrolls wiki basking in the complexity of the lore. No matter how much ESO may look like an Elder Scrolls, that subscription will always be looming, reminding me that I don't truly own the game. Yes, that's how it makes me feel. For me, there was always something special about holding that disc in my hands and thinking, "This is mine. My future adventures and memories are waiting in here." But with the fee, I wouldn't feel like it's mine anymore. That fee is like paying for the game all over again every six months. With that subscription, it will NEVER be a true Elder Scrolls game. Why? Because it's not personal anymore.
I know there are many players out there who are used to pay-to-play MMO's such as World of Warcraft, and to them it's business as usual. But, it can never be that way for me. Bethesda made tons of cash off of Skyrim and it's DLC's. I understand that they just want to make a profit and gain back all the funds they spent on making ESO, but is a fee really necessary? They have already lost a good portion of the players, including me, by just announcing it. Nothing they do can make all that money worth it. I have a feeling that all may go smoothly after release, but when people start realizing that it's not worth the money, they will abandon the fees. Then Zenimax's cash will dry up and ESO will go belly-up just like SWTOR. I hate to say it, but part of me hopes it does. That way, it will go to free-to-play so I can actually get it. Bethesda, Zenimax....If you're reading this, please take it to heart.
I know some, or most, of you didn't bother to read any of that. Hell, some might have just skipped to this last sentence. But give me your opinions on the subscription fee. Is it necessary? Is it just a last ditch attempt to make profit? Why? Please share your opinions, and maybe change mine. I want so badly to enjoy ESO, but I just can't deal with that fee.
