What do you do when you're too sick to work?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 2:12 am

EDIT: I mean "work" to include schooling

I recently had a very odd sickness (and am still undergoing it): I woke up one day (I was fine before), and I had a soar throat. I didn't think much of it, but at midday I also had next-to-no energy, and basic things like walking and thinking clearly I was very slow at doing. So, I thought it was just some kind of flu. The soar throat aspect only lasted a day or two, but the energy thing was at its worst for almost a week, and I've been abusing my refrigerator ice machine. Now, I have a fairly irritable cold! Never have I gone through so many different types of sickness in one run! Supposedly I'll have symptoms for another week, D=

If its serious enough, I'll stop working or schooling or whatever and take a break from life (T.V, reading, games). My opinion is that you should rest and get well quicker, and not spread what you have

I also had a neat idea to plan and update when I can a program for the next time I am sick, so I can make the most of the time I'll have being motionless,

TL;DR What do you do when you're too sick to work or do your normal routine? Keep working, or take it easy?

I go into work anyway. I don't have a job that requires extensive close contact with others, so I won't be getting too many people sick.

I have been forunate enough over the years to have a pretty good immune sytem that can kick most bugs' asses. What leaves most people calling in to work for (sometimes) several days, just make getting around just a minor nuicance for me...of course I've never been one to avoid any and all germs, that's what we were given an immune sytem for, we should be using it.

What's a "GP?"

For my university, its over-complicated to get a doctors note, -_-. In addition to the normal note, you have to bug your family doctor to fill out a fairly detailed form, that is once you find it, and there are various versions, -_-. Then, you have to make copies and give it to each professor. Do not want to do that again

Most of the work I do is excuses not to do any work. Being actually sick just saves me some time.

General practitioner, fancy word for docter. Don't know how it is there though, I got one for depression so the government can list me as crazy. Also depending on your relationship with your doctor and access, I don't have a family docter (i know mine very very well though). Shame that you have to make copies, but can't you post them to the university or email them these days for your illness? Just say if I came in you'd all get deathplauge so sorry, better not risk it then take a break.

I get paid by the hour, and I don't get sick pay. A single day off sick could mean a loss of £450, so I work.

Sounds like ya got Mono. Ewww.... Too sick to work? Hell, I've called in too "tired" to work a few times (damn those all nighters with Oblivion when it first came out!).

I got mono once, begged my school to keep me for the semester and finish off one required course. Though, because I had mono, my girlfriend at the time left me, because I was boring. [censored] [censored].

I go to work. Most of the time, that can be a good thing, as many illnesses, while inconvenient, are minor. Sometimes, though, it makes it worse to man the [censored] up and keep going.
Once, I had meningits, didn't know it, went to work. I woke up in a hospital room. I'd told the bf to turn his music down the previous night, because noise, light, simply exisiting was excruciating pain. He'd taken offense. I didn't want to be percieved as a wussy ass girl, so I said nothing. Went home, hurled, went in to work, hurled, head still hurt. Took a prescription migrane pill. Resumed working. Next thing I knew, I was in a strange room, and the nurse informed me had to lie flat on my back. I was there almost two weeks. Couldn't eat, slept a lot.

I find that sleep, lots of fluids, and knowing my limits helps me recuperate much more quickly than trying to motor through as if nothing is wrong.

When i was working, my boss was good if i was sick, id be sick enough to stay at home, not just a little bit sick but not get out of bed sick, unlike so many people that are to sick to work but not sick enough to go shopping, i was always honest to my boss, if i was sick, id tell him if i wanted a day off id just say. When i was at school i was sick alot so i missed alot of school, if you can pass on whatever your got then keep away from others, people would always come to work sick or school sick and pass it on and it ended up with more people at home sick, and its amazing how stupid humans are when their they have something they can pass onto others, because so many know and dont care.

I have to be virtually dying before I won't go into work. Or if I think I might be contagious I don't go in.

But I find I tend to recover quicker when I go into work and focus on something as opposed I lying in bed feeling sorry for myself. ;) sometimes forcing yourself to get up, have a shower and get in the car is the best thing for recovery.

I was never allowed to stay of school unless I was dying and even at that I lied sometimes so it got to a point were I'd need to go in regardless.
Now I'm working, I can't lie to anyone and somehow it's ingrained that even if I'm ill I must go in - been at work the last 2 weeks with the cold and bad hay fever
