What do you do with pennies?

Post » Mon Jul 23, 2012 1:17 pm

I hate cash to begin with, and use a card 99.99% of the time, but every now and then when I have to use cash and get pennies back I throw them in the trash. Or if by some chance they happen to make it to my pocket and collect in my room, I gather them all up and toss them in the trash. Sounds like a waste, but it's more hassle to gather them up and keep them around than it is to just trash em. It costs more to make pennies than what they're actually worth, I really think they shouldn't exist...

I dump them with the rest of my change and don't give them a second thought either way.

I'm the same, I basically do away with every penny I get. Normally I drop them in the parking lot on the way out of the store...

Err.... that's illegal isn't it? :P. I collect all the change I see, even off the floor - I'm not ashamed (though I probably should be).

I roll them up and bring them to the bank. That's the most logical and sensible thing to do.

In theory I'm sure. What should be illegal is actually making pennies. Waste of money. In fact all physical money should cease to exist. Do you know how much we'd save from the process of continually printing money and destroying old money? Millions. Death to money. I think there should just be an app on your phone and you should be able to text money to people.

Or even better, make it like the BUMP app. I just type in $5 and bump my phone to yours, and boom $5 in your account. Win.

My whole family pools their pennies and other chump change together into a jar. It collects around $20 a month. :P

I collect all mine up in a huge jar, then take it to the bank when it's full. Usually comes to about £10-15, which buys a cheap game, or two cinema tickets so it's worth saving them.

Or people who lose them, or don't carry them around all the time?

I'm sorry, but this is just begging for trouble. I'd love it for actual money to go away, but that presents problems. Security issues come to mind. How secure would it be?

Well, one way to make paperless transactions more safe would be to remove the use of cards as well. Anything that could be stolen.

By this, we could implement the use of http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20787-electronic-tattoos-to-monitor-vital-signs.html. They're skin tattoos that could be made to act as debit cards, credit cards, etc. Capable of linking to your bank account and scanned to make transfers, etc. But aside from money, it could be used to monitor vital signs, used as identification, and all of that good stuff. The best part is, it can't be stolen. But as we all know, the more advanced the tech, the more advanced the criminals. I'm sure if we had these implemented in our society, there would be more cases of skin stripping etc.

Imagine a thug tackling you down and shaving the skin off of your wrist for your tattoo! MADNESS!

I tend to lose the pennies I get. (Same for coins in general, really) I don't intentionally dispose of them, but they don't necessarily make it to the ol' coin jar by day's end.

With no iron or nickel in them, I'd like to know how you pull that off.

And we could make them different colors based on how much is in your bank account, where you live, and all sorts of other fun criteria.

The 20p rule applies to me, I only pick up a coin if it is 20p or more, or if it is 20p or more in 10p's, although I do not pick up a single 10p. The only exceptions will be made if I am going to a shop and have 95p or something, and if there is pennies or a 5p coin I will pick it up so I have £1 to buy a drink :)

I throw them in the top drawer of my desk with the rest of my change, and that is where they remain. I typically pick out what I need from the change drawer when I need it, but I never take out pennies, so they just sit there. Maybe one day I'll get them all and take them to the bank, but right now I doubt I have more than two dollars in pennies, so screw it.

I make it a point most every time I go out, to come home with more change than I left with. That change (pennies included) wind up in my change jar next to my computer. Eventually, I will roll them up and either deposit them in the bank, or just exchange them. I consider it a rainy day fund.

We could get the mark of the beast and buy and sell by the mark and if you don't have it you can't buy or sell...
