The game can't determine if a male has a beard or not, so the mask was removed to avoid beards clipping through it.

Why didn't they just have the mask cover your face regardless? Seems like an incredibly stupid reason to not have a mask. I don't claim to know anything about game designing though, so maybe this is one of the hardest things ever to do.

Wait...I don't get that as a reason. When you don a helm, the game removes your hair to prevent clipping.

Do the beards clip through the Dragon Priest masks?

EDIT : it seems that the wrong model was used in the CK when it was created. There are different nif files for both male and female. I see it as they just goofed and duplicated the "Maskless" version for both of the male versions.

Um...

-Helmets and Hoods take away your hair

So it's possible to do the same thing with a mask too.

the Masked Hood doesn't appear on me at all, it just gets rid of my ears o.o
and if your an Argonian it get's rid of your Horns.

Beast races have the most Clothing Malfunctions ._.

Edit :
What about the Dragon Priest masks?
Dragon Priest Masks get rid of your head entirely, I should know because mixing a Dragon Priest mask and the Arch Mage robes, you end up with no Head o.o

That is because hair uses an equipment slot, while for some reason or another they did not use an equipment slot for beards, which they probably should have done. In other words, it's a design flaw. This is also why guard helmets were modified to cover the eyes, because making them full helmets was the only way to make the facial hair not clip through the helmets.

Ugh....I hate when they cut corners....it seems to be a growing trend at Bethesda...

If beards used an equipment slot like hair then you'd be clean shaven when wearing a helmet.
