Whats with everyone being so negative regarding voice chat o

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:51 pm

So I'm in an argument over on the ME3 forums and long story short some ppl said they just don't like using mics b/c they think everyone is going to spam music or just act stupid in general.

I don't get this. I think it's more of those ppl thinking eveyrone is beneath them. Why?

B/c I've used voice chat for years and I don't recall it being as bad as anyone makes it out to be. For a while I only talked in vent with a guild in WOW. So my experience I'll start with a couple of Xmases ago.

I bought L4D2 and rarely play with ppl who are annoying.

You might say when new games come out - all the childish ppl come out to play as well.

I've been playing the multiplayer portion of ME3 since midnight release and the closest thing I've come to someoen being annoying was someones mic messing up. Other than that ppl don't even talk let alone make childish remarks or whatever.

I just think it's pompous to think instinctively that everyone is going to be annoying and therefore not use a mic.....in a team based game.

I have nothing to say to people on Xbox Live. In a co-op game they'll never listen and in a competitive game they'll only complain and trashtalk. Why bother?

If someone doesn't want to use a microphone so they don't have to deal with annoying people, that's their decision

I hear idiots on mics all the time in TF2, but I just mute or turn down the volume as I am too focused in the match to pay attention to voices :D

/me avoids voice-chat in most games, except TF2 and Tribes: Ascend. TF2 because it's fun to chat with fellow furries, and Tribes: Ascend (well, Mumble, really), because it helps with tactics.

I don't follow. How does "not in my personal experience" turn into "they think they're better than everyone"? Lots of people use the anonymity of the internet to be annoying. This isn't generally considered a disputable matter of opinion. How is it "pompous" to avoid a medium that would make them harder to ignore? It makes no sense at all.

Your experience is not everyone's experience. I have L4D2. In many of the games I've played, people are booted from the game immediately for not having a mic. That's annoying behavior. I've had people blast music, or scream every word. This is especially annoying in a game like Left 4 Dead, which relies heavily on audio cues in gameplay. A mic can help tactics, but can also hurt them if the person is hard to understand because they mumble or have garbled quality. In my personal experience, that's the majority of games, even. More often than not people have nothing useful to say, and even when they do, another majority of them is incomprehensible. I fail to see how it's at all pompous to choose not to pay extra for a microphone to join into something you dislike in the first place.

B/c you're automatically saying a whole community is going to act like a child. Even if you have a few or several games a week where somoene act like an ass you automatically don't let anyone else show you differently.

For every person that is annoying theres 2 that would act civilized and you don't even want to try that.

You obviously haven't played with the same people I got stuck with then.

This one guy kept repeating "Newbie" everytime he said something "aw thanks newbie" "I am strong! Newbie" "OOOOOH Newbie." "Thanks newbie"

And he did it in a soft half south american accent like he wasn't being insulting, but instead the sound of "Newbie" turned him on. He also ooh'd and ahhh'd the entire match. I was about 30 seconds from going off on him and telling him to shut the hell up when we all died.

There's always the mute button but my friends and I would always play CoD together so mics were very useful. And if anyone tried being annoying, they'd eventually be quiet because of us.

That's not really related to voice chat as a "community", though. The people in online games are the community being referred to, not the ones who use a mic. In my experience, "2 civilized to every annoying" makes you the luckiest online gamer who ever lived in regards to people they've met. People aren't saying "I think voicechat users are going to be immature", they're saying "I've already experienced this group as immature and would rather not let them turn their capital letters into actual loudness."

Before I used a mic in online games, I was afraid that I would be assaulted by sixually frustrated young boys making "Get back in the kitchen and make me a sammich" jokes. The reality I've encountered is that most players are pretty decent, and they want to have a pleasant experience just as much as I do. There will be the occasional prat, but I could say the same thing about going to a club or a pub.

I'd be willing to voice chat in games with people I personally knew or have net-known for a long time. Otherwise, I don't want to deal with it. I can ignore text chat. I can't ignore mic chat, unless I leave the game/event. Also, I'm less likely to lose my temper in text during the times when I did encounter rudeness.

Altho for me personally, another reason I don't like/want to use mics is because I have allergies and I figure my constant, habitual sniffling/clearing of throat into a mic would annoy the crap out of most people. :D

I don't mind other people using mics, but I don't like using them myself. Not sure why, fairly sure I've mostly grown out of the hating-my-voice stage.

Very rarely does anyone do anything annoying when I use voice chat. The only time I see it done on a regular basis is Free Mode of GTA IV. But even there, I enjoy people's banter and fighting. And yes, I use Xbox Live. I guess it depends on the individual's personal experience. Maybe a lot of people have had bad experiences, but I've had good ones for the most part.

I def don't use voice chat with strangers. Mainly because I swear quite a lot when playing multiplayer... People who I know don't mind but I didn't even realise how much I swore until people told me. Guess when you're by yourself you don't really take much notice.

Mostly on forums;getting to know people over a long period of time. Altho not too much these days since I spend less and less "regular" 'net time anywhere. Haven't done the instant chat thing in years either. If not gaming I don't tend to stick by the keyboard long enough to make that very viable, if that makes sense. Sit down, type, run out of the room to do something, come back, sit down, read/type, run out again. (edit) But in the past...yeah, mostly forums. Ah, the original, old BG message board...good times.

this, waste of time otherwise. If you do have to talk to weirdos there is always the mute function though.
