When will Bethesda use a new engine?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 5:59 am

It's obvious the creation engine is gamebryo 2.0. The best example is to look at Dragon's Dogma by Capcom, which has graphics and animations that blow Skyrim's out of the water. So I'm wondering when Bethesda will actually develop and use a new engine? Capcom developed the MT framework - it actually is a powerful new engine used for Dragon's Dogma.

Another example is Hard Reset, which has a superbly optimized engine that was created by just a few people in the space of a year. I'm pretty sure they didn't have Skyrim's budget, but look up pics and tell me which game looks better.

Basically, I'm critical of Bethesda for not truly creating a new engine despite having massive financial backing. Meanwhile, my hero in Skyrim still jumps like a cripple in low gravity....

Well the next Fallout game will use the same engine as Skyrim, just with a few changes. I highly doubt Bethesda would scrap the engine any time soon, it's held together with masking tape and hot glue sure, but it does work. There's no other engine that does their games as well as the one they've made (albeit bolted on to GameBryo).

Why would they? This engine, be it Creation or Gamebryo, is optimized for what they do, and more importantly, how they do it. You cannot only take into account graphical ability. There is much more to it than that.

Why would Beth change the engine when Skyrim is Beth's least buggiest game to date in comparasion to the previous games. The more important thing that Beth needs to do is make it better optimized for the PS3.

why should they change it? it's perfect for the kind of game that Bethesda makes, and they're good at using it

Maybe they should use it forever. Gamebryo is just that awesome.

I would love to see a fallout game that was more inner city with aliens and neon lights kind of a mix of deus ex, heavy metal 2000 and Daft Punk had a 3some and made a baby and had the gameplay style of fallout/skyrim

My bet is they'll keep this engine until ps3 and 360 are replaced.

PS4 and 720 may be out in 2013 or something, maybe sooner(doubt it). They will surely build a new engine for that.

I doubt they'll ever stop using the current engine they'll just keep updating the engine.

There are still heaps of features they can remove from this engine in the name of streamlining before they need a new one.

Game would look futuristic and dead like fallout but in a city enviroment, the music would be like somthing Daft Punk would put out, be all lit up in neon lights like Deus Ex and it would use the skyrim/fallout type engine.

Textures have nothing to do with the engine. Animations have nothing to do with the engine.

bit of a harsh statement, i dont know what game your playing.

OT: using a different engine would just be illogical, i mean yes sure, unreal, cryengine and frostbite look pretty but they'd be useless for actuall gameplay, the engine would have to be heavily modified to support game mechanics. on a note though enviroments would be fine though

My guess is that they might try something new depending on the capabilities of the next generation console systems. I would almost guarantee you won't see another elder scrolls on the current gen of consoles as they are already stretched thin on their current hardware.

If the next gens are brought up to speed with the current level of tech, then a much broader engine could be used.

Perhaps I'm misguided on the graphics issue, maybe they are as awesome as it gets. But animations, seriously?
