Where are all the dungeons?

Post » Fri Dec 03, 2010 12:14 pm

Hey,
Just wondering where all the abandoned buildings/vaults/caves are that you can get in and not come out of for like an hour. What I really enjoyed about Fallout 3 was just the fact that, besides just the wasteland being so freely explorable, you could also find numerous dungeons that provide extra depth to the place (literally and figuratively).
I know there are a few vaults scattered across the Mojave (none of which I've found yet since I've just recently found Novac) but after having explored most of the western/southwestern part of the map, I've found zero dungeons that are bigger then two rooms, so am I just looking in the wrong places, or should I simply wait till a bit later in the game? (I'm level 10 now)
Thanks!

There are some vaults and caves and such. Some maze-like buildings that are relatively down right annoying to navigate through.

But I have to be honest with you I really did not like the amount of dungeon crawling there was in fallout 3 at all. Most of the enjoyable experiences for me happened top-side in F3. So far there hasn't been too much of it in FNV and for that I am thankful. I am level 26.

I keep restaring my characters over & over, so i havent got too far. I have though stumbled across one cave with giant rats(they are MUCH tougher than they look) & radiation barrels.

Absolutely agree with Armedsauce, never was a fan of trudging through numerous dungeons, in F3 or Oblivion to be honest. Always found the most enjoyable bit was just wondering the wates and happening upon settlements.

Don't get me wrong, I love wandering about the wastelands, scavenging and finding the occasional settlement (FO3 could have had alot more in the way of towns, but the capital wasteland was one of the areas that was hit the hardest during the war so, more rads, less life seems reasonable  ) so NV definitely improved upon that, although I think a good balance between dungeons and settlements make for a more vibrant wasteland, since it makes the world feel less safe (atleast to me).
I know Obsidian worked on the world, and I should look at it not like a Bethesda game when it comes to how the Mojave is built, but the whole point of the two working together should make for a fine balance between awesome towns and surface, and dungeon crawling.

The thing I hate about dungeon crawling in FO3 and Oblivion was that the enviroments were very "Copy and Pasted".

yeah, all the dungeons more or less looked the same, all the vaults looked the same.

Not only that but they were like freaking mazes. I hated that the most about them.

They are out there exploring is the key use your map!

From what I've seen there is not as many "dungeons" as FO3 had which is kind of a good thing actually I thought personally they got very redundant after awhile

All the dungeons in Oblivion looked the same to me. I loved that game but it got tedious. Espicially the Ayleid (spelling?) ruins. Maybe I don't notice it as much in Fallout because stuff looks modern

I agree with this post! While it was sometimes very rewarding to walk an hour inside a vault to eventually get nice loot, I prefered roaming the wasteland and looting some smaller buildings.
Many times I just got lost inside a big building, mainly because the maps are not too great in FO.

I found that cave playing on hard/hardcoe i was relieved when all i saw were giant rats. 7 deaths later(low ammo) i wasn't so happy about giant rats.

They're gone! :D
And good riddance too.

Somehow I like the locations a lot more now.
Maybe it's because I don't need to worry that I'll be stuck in a dungeon for 20 minutes just so I can get a tiny reward at the end.
Don't really like dungeons, unless they truly have something worth the time spent at the end.
Which usually in Fallout 3, didn't.

There's a bunch of buildings around the outskirts of Vegas, but, as the OP mentioned, they're all really small - just one floor, just one map zone, only a handful of rooms.

It's a bit disappointing, really. I enjoyed exploring the various places. Especially the ones that had good themes or stories to them (like LOB Enterprises, if I recall correctly...)

But, hey... there's still a bunch of places to look around, maybe I'll find some interesting non-quest dungeons. :)

I like the way NV is actually, I like running across different factions settlements and evening the score :) Infact I think Obsidian have done alot of good things with the franchise since FO3! I love the weapon mods, ammo mods and just the polish that they have done overall, just small things that make the game so much fun! I love exploring so I am not too worried if their arn't huge dungeons, to be honest in Oblivion dungeon hopping got soooo boring after awhile mainly because they were too similar and there was not enough content inside to keep you going back.

I'm disappointed at the dungeon aspect in FO:NV as well.

For pure copy/paste, nothing was worse then Oblivion. The old ruins were way too overused and the design was very blah. FO3 did a much better job of it. No two locations were exactly the same (other then house layouts). The metros were slightly repetitive, but it's a modern society and that's how things are done in modern society. But the radio cisterns were all unique layouts as were most of the larger indoor buildings.

When I ran across Nipton's town hall, I was very impressed. Here was an indoor location that was more then 3 rooms and a bathroom. The ruined REPCONN factory was wonderful (if maze-like) as was the Bison Hotel. But the Boulder City Ruins - were an absolute joke where you could see the entirety of the area from the entrance (nowhere near as good as Germantown Police HQ). The design of the Hoover Dam is good/bad - big, but also hollow in a lot of ways on first glance.

I foresee lots and lots of cells being added by modders (CevSteel has already started a NVInteriors project).

I love running around the wastelands but I would like to see a few more buildings opened up. There's just something about walking into a house and not knowing if there is an enemy inside.

too many buldings with the doors boarded up....I suppose its lots of scope for modders to add their own "dungeons"

I like to have a mix between dungeon crawling and exploring topside, but I get seriously frustrated at trudging down corridors in the dark looking for the exit, a few more tunnels and stuff wouldn't have hurt though

vault 22 was a good one, creepy and unique :-)

Oblivion was horrible that way yeah, you basically had 2/3 dungeon models: Forts, Ayleid ruins and just...well..CAVES. Still, the atmosphere and the way some of the places were done made them acceptable. FO3 was WAAAAY better in that regard, I particulary enjoyed the Dunwich building (which is a reference to The Dunwich Horror, a, you guessed it, horror novel and the Old Ones from the Cthulhu Mythos) because it was scary as HELL, with all the illusions, and a slight hint that there was something evil watching you all the time. The reward of the place wasn't anything special, but the story of the place which was laid out through computer entries by the former pre-war employees and the aforementioned illusions were just so awesome.

Also I will be monitoring that mod you were talking about, sounds great!

I really enjoyed the Dungeon crawl through DC in FO3. I will echo the slight (ever so) disappointment on not having the same option to Dungeon Crawl through some parts of New Vegas.
