Where are the Two-Headed Grizzly Bears?

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 1:20 am

They're on the NCR Flag. I wanna see them roaming the wastelands too!

...maybe they're hiding in a cave... a cave littered with deathclaw bones (should definitely be the apex predator on the west coast).

...... Maybe they're native to California, and we won't see them atall.

To be perfectly honest, i won't be suprised in the least if we never get to see a 2 headed bear.

Then why didn't we see them in Fallout 2?

I think it's just meant to represent the rebirth of California or something, and instead of giving it a new design completely they just took the old flag and added a head to show that this is the new generation... Or something... I'm tired and I have little to no control to what I'm typing.

This is what I was thinking, and it is especially apparent given the theme of the series. Maybe you'll get an easter egg. Who knows.

I thought the 2 headed bear thing was just a joke. Yao Guai are the real mutated bears.

Well, sure that's what it's supposed to mean to you and me... But in the game, do you seriously think Tandi had time to think-up some BS high concept like that while she was busy forging a new nation?

No, in the game (logically) they chose the two-headed bear because that's what the cali grizzly mutated into and it's the baddest critter in the cali wasteland. Hence, we should see them in the game...

Maybe coming down from the mountains above Jacobstown...

Considering NCR is pretty much the largest emergence of civilization in the American wasteland....I think somewhere between creating the guidelines for their democracy and creating their own legal tender they just may have had time to fabricate an idea for a flag without just saying hey...let's put that thing we saw last week on it.

Or maybe there are two headed grizzly bears. I'm leaning toward no though. Brahmin are the only thing we've seen thus far with two heads.

I can put a tentacle bear with dragon wings on a flag, doesn't mean it exist.
We have no proof that it exists beside the flag.

Umm no, we've seen two-headed bears on the NCR flag too.

I'm just taking a cue from reality here...

Once upon a time somebody saw a California grizzly and they were impressed enough to put it on a flag. But yeah, I guess it's not reasonable to think something like that could happen twice. :P

PS

We all know how popular fantasy creatures are as national symbols. Just look at the Russian Bear, The American Bald Eagle, the English Lion... hehehe!

Maybe the two headed bear was a one of a kind mascot for the NCR that died?

you realize it only took him a few minutes or so to write his post about the rebirth of California and the new generation right?

Also while were on symbols lets say the 2 heads mean that their always awake and watching. Due to one head going to sleep while the other is awake. They take turns and are always alert. Probrably not a reason but its fun to come up with other symbolic meanings.

Sure you could do that. Care to supply a rational, practical reason as to why you would?

Symbols are only valuable if they convey a specific, intended, EASILY UNDERSTOOD message.

The American bald eagle is the national symbol of the US because it is a graceful, powerful animal and the founders wanted that same power and grace to be associated with their new nation.

The Eagle's value as a symbol comes from the fact that you don't need to be educated or even literate to understand the qualities of the eagle. You only need to have seen one hunt, snatch a rabbit from the field or a trout from the stream to KNOW what badasses they are!

If the NCR is looking for an EFFECTIVE symbol to communicate to ILLITERATE, UNEDUCATED wastelanders that they are a powerful force, they need to use a symbol those wastelanders can understand.

If two-headed bears don't exist, they're useless as a symbol because nobody will understand what they mean.

As someone else already pointed out, the only two-headed animals we've seen are brahmin. Brahmin are stupid, docile prey animals. If you're looking to makeup a power symbol you would not use two heads because two heads would make most wasterlanders think of stupid, prey animals NOT powerful predators.

I'm sorry but there is no good reason to use the two-headed grizzly as a symbol unless they actually exist as big, scary predators. Otherwise, wastelanders would just look at the flag and think, "Wow, those douchebags really svck at drawing brahmin. Let's kill 'em and take their stuff." :P

I'm pretty sure they just found an old Cali flag threw their letters on it, and mutated the bear to show that they are in post-apocolytia.

Lulz. :tops:

Anyways. I'm gonna offer a simplistic explanation that barely anyone will read.

Bear on the Cali flag.
Bombs drop, places are largely irradiated and mutations are prevalent.
NCR rises, and adopts the Cali flag.
They add an extra head to the bear because mutations are all over as it is, and it is just kind of there.
Under the scenes, it portrays a small bit of semi-macabre humor, in the fact that a state symbol is semi tarnished by displaying an obvious imperfection.
The touch is there for artistic contrast, and interest. No extremely important or complicated reasoning behind it.
