Where can I find 5 Ice Wraiths to kill?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 6:52 am

I don't want extra Quest being forced into my Main Quest Logs so Winterhold is out (First Lesson will be automatically added to the Main Quest Log once entered). Is there any other place where Ice Wraiths live together? I normally find one at a time, and rarely seen them. I'm 40 hours into the game now and I think I've only seen 2 of them. Need to kill 5 of them for a quest.

I've found Ice Wraith Teeth just lying around in some places, and sometimes sold by Alchemists (shops are random though, so you might need to keep checking in every 48 hours). Wander around along the northern coast and you should find some, though. Try near Dawnstar if you're out of ideas.

Edit: I mention Dawnstar because on my way up to the temple for the Vaermina quest with the priest I got attacked by 2 Ice Wraiths at once... I was about level 25 though.

I have consistently encountered Ice Wraiths:

1. Near Winterhold, there is a barrow to the south east with an aboveground burial chamber just off of the road.
2. If you go NW (I think) past Whiterun, across the plains, you will eventually enter a snowy forest. Along with some frostbite spiders, there will be a landmark called 's Stone or Marker. There are often a couple of wraiths here, too.

I know these aren't the most specific directions, and could be wrong entirely (especially #2), but if you wander the coldest parts of Skyrim, you will come across them, I promise. They are not fun to fight if you aren't prepared. :)

Travel the steps up to High Hrothgar; you'll run into one or two.

Yeah winterhold area and NW higher regions is where I encountered them mostly. Normally on those zigzagging paths high up on the throat of the world as well.

depends a lot on your level too, if you're 40hrs in I'm guessing you're around mid to late 30s, maybe even 40s?

Hunt anywhere that's snowy, they're bound to turn up

Thank you everyone. So there's not a place where more than 4 of them reside together?
I guess I'll search around Winterhold and Snowy areas, what about Windhelm?

Does my level determine the chance of finding these Ice Wraiths?
After reading this I'm very surprised I'm only level 17 after 37 hours to be exact. Do most people get past level 30 after 40 hours? I'm like half way bahind?

I think your level probably partially determines it, yes. I was about level 25 when I encountered 2 at once just outside Dawnstar.

And as to being only level 17 after 37 hours of play... How fast you level is really up to you. On my first character I leveled really slowly, but on subsequent ones I've leveled much faster just because I've learned lots of tricks for leveling faster.

I can only speak to my own playthroughs, but I often don't run into ice wraiths on a regular basis until I'm mid to late 20s.

I guess I was a bit misleading in my post as I don't know for sure if level determines how often they turn up. I've just noticed they're a lot more frequent for me when I'm up there in levels a bit.

Using high hrothgar, I noticed when I go up there at lower levels I'll run into wolves and what not, in my late teens and early 20s it's often bears and when I go there at 30 it's more trolls and bears. I think level determines the enemies you randomly encounter rather than the actual scripted ones. Like the troll that ambushes you on the way to high hrothgar would be a scripted troll (he drops down on you from that slight overhang on the path)

I don't believe you can be 'behind' in a singleplayer game :)

edit: I've also never seen them in groups larger than 2

Hahaha... don't feel bad, man. I play really slow, too. No reason to be in a hurry with this game.

Well and like Vermilion said you learn tricks to gain levels quickly. I'm a serial character restarter, easily have made half a dozen characters and then deleted them. Needless to say I know several of the main areas to go to level up my 'combat' characters and what not, plus running the roads leads to some good random encounter fights (thalmor, random mercs, freeing prisoners being escorted by the legion etc)

Edit: Disregard, you need the kills not the teeth. Sorry.

My current character hit lvl 40 after about 100 hours. Not much questing, but lots of road running and dungeon exploration. No big rush to become huge, as you might surmise.

She's touring the province of Skyrim. She started out at Whiterun, traveled back to Helgen by way of Riverwood, and from there, went to Falkreath, then Markarth, Morthal, Solitude, Dawnstar, Winterhold, Windhelm, and Riften. Currently hitting landmarks that are visible on the way from Riften over to Ivarstead, and that will complete the loop.

Just came across three ice wraiths on my way up to the Shrine of Azura...which is south of Winterhold. Worth checking alchemy stores too as occasionally they'll stock one or two. I'm level 18 by the way (after 50 hours of gameplay so you're not alone in taking things slow :) ) so am sure you have a chance of ice wraiths spawning if you're in the right area.

There are Ice Wraiths around Wayward Pass south of Aftland, and there are two more between Northwatch Keep and Lower Steepfall Burrow. Also around 40 hrs in I was only about level 20 so take it slow, doesn't matter if it takes you well beyond 300 hrs to finish the main quests and level significantly higher. Everyone has their own pace they are comfortable with, to rush it for any reason is silly.

Thank you everyone.
I did not realize I could ask the Quest Giver herself where I can find Ice Wraiths, lol. I found that out after an hour of hunting in snowy plains of Northern Skyrim. They are quite scattered really, but at least I found them.
