Where do i put mod data files?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 4:46 pm

Ok i admit it... im a total noob about this. But i can't seem to find the place to put the data files for the mods i have downloaded... and the mods didn't even come with a readme telling where to put them.

Anyone?

You don't have it on Steam? I thought that was the only version available on PC (at least in Europe/USA).

Just a warning, if you have Steam installed in Program Files folder (or "Program Files (x86)" folder in 64b version) on Windows 7 or Vista, UAC may cause problems with mods.

And a helpful hint, make a shortcut to the Skyrim folder on your desktop so you don't have to browse all the way there every time you add a mod. Since i have all Bethesda's games on Steam, i've made a shorthcut to the "common" folder instead, i can easily get to all games from there.

Nope, Union Aerospace Corporation :teehee: It'll start teleporting demons to your harddrive any minute now :obliviongate:

It stands for User Access Control, it's a part of windows that among other things keeps those folders safe. As such it may prevent access to user added files in those folders.

Dear mr rellion i appreciate you snitching on loathsome pirates... but truly... i do not know what UAC stands for in this regard... no one knows everything. It would please me to keep this thread serious... as it was started with a serious question that i have yet to have had answered.

"there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers"

And here i was thinking i had slayed enough trolls for today.

If that issues is caused by UAC, you can either shut down UAC (don't remember how that's done, but google should give that answer, still, UAC is pretty useful so you shouldn't do that) or just reinstall the game outside of Program files folder. You'd have to reinstall Steam to do that, though.

But before doing something drastic, did the mod have files ending with .esm or .esp? only those appear and need to be checked in the Data Files.

Those are texture files, so they should work when they just are in the correct folder.

Common advice when installing mods is to keep the same file structure as in the compressed archive, and that everything (unless otherwise noted) goes in the "Data" folder. ESP/ESM files go directly into the "data" folder, textures (these are the image files used on models, ends in .dds) goes in the "Textures" folder (and most often subfolders to that) and meshes (these are the 3D models used for everything in the game, ends in .nif) goes in the "Meshes" folder (again, there are often subfolders there).

(Sorry if this was too basic and/or came off as patronising.)

UAC? I had actually completely forgotten that feature nuisance since I disabled it a few years back.
