I wouldn't risk it. I use the whiterun home as a dumping ground for all my stuff.

The only sure safe place to stash stuff is in a house you own.

You can drop things anywhere and they should be there forever if you ever come back to look for them. Unless someone comes along and picks them up, but that only happens if you drop things in the vicinity of an NPC.

If you want to keep them there for an indefinite amount of time, dungeons are actually a bad place to put loot in.
I'd suggest investing in a house. The house in Whiterun costs 5000 septims.
But if home-owning isn't your thing, there are some places that can work as safehouses, such as faction housing (The College ofWinterhold has some, for example), or certains cabins scattered around Skyrim (such as Meeko's Hut).

Do you think that small shack with the basemant outside of riverwood that houses the witch would be safe?

If you do leave on the ground, place a marker there so you know where to find it.

As long as you use the apothecary satchel, in the basemant only, then you should be fine.

I meant like just dropping the bars in the basemant.

In Oblivion outside cells were safe. Just find a sheltered area where a NPC wouldn't wander into like a cliff ledge or a inside a circle of rocks and drop your stuff. Containers are chancy unless you own them.

I've dumped some dragon bones and scales outside the Whiterun home (before I owned it) and thought I could pick them up once I get the home. I left Whiterun and when I came back from a quest, the bones and scales were gone. However, I dumped a steel axe near the smelter in Whiterun and that stayed there forever LOL

Just put one gold bar in the witches house upstairs and one in the basemant. Then go do some quests and come back to see if they are still there.

As a Pirate, you should look for some Cove on the coast in which to stash your stuff. Preferably near some wrecked ship.

Cheers.

There are a few containers around that apparently never reset.

Stuff on the ground can last a long time, but personally I wouldn't count on it being there forever.

Edit: Riverside Shack might be a good home for a pirate.

You can get away with just dumping them on tehground, but be aware they can clip through the scenery and be lost in the void forever.
Can also cause extra work for you machines hardware, up to the point you can sometimes never go back into places as it becomes CPU overload central.

When I was in the Companions and had no home of my own, I'd just go downstairs to the beds and drop all my loot in that room.

My shield brothers and sisters would always yell at my character about the mess, but never stole anything.

1.) Boot the CK

2.) Get to one of the wrecked ships

3.) Make one of the storage units persistant storage.

4.) Profit

I've amassed a large bit of golden bars taken from mey former crew. i grow older i've developed an addiction to skooma and from a few late nights with filthy wenches. some sickness. i ask my fellow pubmates where is a good place to hide mey gold aye? and if you even try to go after it. i'll slit your throat!

I've seen people fight to the death over a single piece of iron ore, and I've had people hand me rubies saying "you dropped this."
