Where do you see gaming in 5 years?

What do you think gaming will be like? Do you think the 3 next-gen consoles will fail? Will app games on smartphones be the main place for games?

I think the Wii U will as start selling once it gets some games. So far it just has ports of games that had been released a year or two ago. The 3ds is selling better now, but it does need some more games. Animal Crossing and Pokemon are due out later this year so that should boost their sales. I could see the next wii/ds will possibly be the same thing, with the controller basically being a ds that can play console games.

The next PS3 seems to have an impressive lineup of games, but the jump in graphics is not as great as previous generations, so the WiiU might not be as abandoned by 3rd party as the Wii. Sony seems to be focusing on hardcoe/core gamers, and it seems to have snagged partial exclusivity with Destiny. I guess price will determine whether or not the PS3 will do well. Also a low price point for the PS3 could undermine the WiiU and hurt its sales.

As for Xbox... I don't know. If Microsoft continues chasing the casual like the Wii used to, I'm afraid theyll fall flat on their face. The xbox360s later life with Kinect and Netflix etc seem to suggest Microsoft is more interested in making an 'entertainment box' that does everything a pc can do. I worry that Microsoft is chasing casual demographic, the one that brought the Wii success. I'm worried because I don't think that demographic exists anymore. They have smartphones with casual games. However since neither of the 2 other consoles have focused on that demographic, Microsoft could grab onto it with the silly funky kinect hand-waving.

I think pc gaming will continue as it has done, though it will be interesting to see how steam competes with origin and uplay.

So what do you guys think?

Ps. Sorry for the long post. This is just my opinion, but I'm interested to see other opinions on the matter. I'd like to see what general thoughts are on the direction of gaming for a University research project.
