Which Platform?

Post » Sat Oct 18, 2008 1:54 pm

Looking for anyone who can convince me to get Fallout N.V. for P.C. or PS3. I don't have a PS3 anymore but i was thinking about getting one just so i can play awesome titles like this one. On the other hand i do have a computer but it is an 27" imac (2.8ghz Intel i7 quad-core, 8 gigs of Ram, and a ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card.) So i could buy the game, windows 7, and external hard drive to backup data (strongly recommended when partitioning your hard drive) then use boot camp or i could buy a used 160Gb PS3 and the game. Surprisingly both options cost virtually the same. A list of pros and cons would be awesome at this point because my mind is completely divided on this one. Any good input would be greatly appreciated.

I edited the title, encouraging platform wars is neither recommended nor wanted on these forums. Let's just constructively discuss which would be best for you.

That's only if you have a system capable of handling the extra load that mods add to your system. There are those out there that have PC's that can't handle vanilla Oblivion, let alone New Vegas modded.

I personally play on pc, but if I played on a console I'd probably get an XBOX for my games, Can't really say why, I just would.

PS3 has never let me down, hell I am using my PS3 to type this message with the PS3 Internet Browser, my Fallout NV runs very well and I am pretty bug-free (Except for the rare bugs that come with the engine) and I am happily playing my 3rd playthrough.

Not all mods are like that. For me the most effective mods for enjoyment of the game have been the radio mods (conelrad is just <3 )and the UI ones that made convo windows bigger and put the food requirements (etc.) on the HUD. These mods improved my experienced so much at no cost to performance that i feel gutted for anyone who played without them. Not to mention there's the access to the console on the PC which ccan dig you out of a lot of the little quest and companion bugs that mar the game.

Not all mods are like that.

That is true, but there are lots of mods out there, very good mods that will cripple some systems out there, especially if you rig just barely meets the minimum requirements.

Here is a small sample of some of the mods that I run for FO3:
Dc Interiors
Marts Mutant Mod
Dynamic Weather
Enhanced Weather
GNR:More Where That Came from
Project Beauty
Weapon Mod kits

that doesn't even include the numerous texture replacers that I have installed; which include but not limited to:
NMC's Performace Pack
Babe MK3 female Body replacer
Breeze's male body.

All of these put together will absolutly cripple alot of systems out there, so yes, mods can and do add an extra load to your system.

Any PC built in the last few years just destroys any console for both raw power and ability to throw high resolution displays. The consoles are where the money is now so that's what the ads target.

I love video games and I have trouble understanding why any gamer would cripple themselves to that extent. I have friends who actually use consoles and it's painful to watch a shooter being played on one. Now a race game or a melee game like Street Fighter is probably better on a console but shooters ... no.

I'm 64 this year and have been playing shooters since Doom.

Edit: If your PC can run it, then get it. Mods will enhance the experience so much.

Mako, it really depends on the computer you bought. I received an expensive laptop as a gift a few years ago that cost my grandpa more than an Alienware laptop, and can't even run TF2.

The laptop I have right now can run NV yet it cost less than half of what my previous laptop was.

I guess I am just scarred from it, I am known for being quite frugal and to waste $700 really killed PC gaming for me.

What have you got? Often just a few bucks can make a big difference.

I built an i5 machine and added a GTX 460 for a pretty strong game machine for just a bit more than what you paid.

By the sounds of it ps3 would be best for you.

If on the other hand you have a decent PC ( does not have to be a great one to run NV ) that can handle NV go for that.

Normally I would say PC but since its being powered though Steam I'm going with the 360. I've only had one freeze in the last 30 hours since I installed it to my harddrive and that was probably my fault because I took too long picking a name at the Character creation screen.

The Steam version works just fine. 156 hours so far. If you have trouble refresh your cache.

It sounds like your PC is good enough to run it with mods, so PC is the best choice for you
You will love the mods they make any game that much better, not to mention you can make your own :hubbahubba:

Definitely PC for the mods, adds a stupid amount of replay-ability ;)

PC.
There's no discussing it IMO.
New Vegas, FO3, Oblivion, all of them have crazy amount of mods that you can use to custom tailor the game the way you want it.
Console versions don't even come close to it.

And this is coming from an xbox 360 player.

PC. Not just for the mods, but if you get stuck in a rock you won't have to reload an old save. The ability to use console on PC is what keeps me into PC gaming.

I say go with what would be more comfortable for you.

My nephew has an X box and was totally lost when he looked at my keyboard and mouse. " Uh, so how do you play?" he asked.

He loves Oblivion. He got that wargame instead of new vegas, though.

I'd say PC. If for no other reason than the modding community being a lot faster and more thorough with bug fixes than the official patches.

Not everyone wants mods, sometimes its best to just appreciate what they have made and stop altering it. Even if I had a PC I wouldn't use mods.
