Whirlwind Cloak: Too powerful to be useful?

Post » Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:49 pm

I just went to the Karhspire camp complex to fight a bunch of Foresworn using the whirlwind cloak. What I found is that as I was about to stab someone they would often be tossed away from me just as I was about to hit them. So would chase them some more only to have them thrown even further away from me. It was almost like one of those comedy routines where you keep kicking the item you want to pick up further away.

In some ways this cloak is better than unrelenting force, but I can see it might be a tad frustrating if you have to keep chasing down your enemies.

Sounds extremely useful - all mages/archers are likely to love it's combat use.

You have to do the quest called Earth and Wind or something like that to make the spell available.

Yep, I just wish there were more spells.

You need to complete the quest Wind and Sand for Neloth. It can only be received by asking if you can help with his experiments and you might have to do some radient quests before it is triggered.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that this would be an ideal defensive spell for mages. Good idea.

You are doing it wrong. Use that spell when you DON'T want people to get close to you. If you are a melee character try using the first level of become ethereal. It allows you to close the distance with enemy mages and archers without getting hurt and then when you get close your melee attack will end the ethereal effect right when you need it to. Use the short version so that it becomes available again more quickly. You usually don't need more than 8 seconds to close the distacne anyway.

Good idea. I was thinking whirlwind cloak would be good for situations where you are surrounded. Plus, it takes time for your opponents to pick themselves up off the ground, giving extra time to damage them.

It's meant for entirely long/mid range combat characters.
it's not good for spellswords or warriors.
You either need to focus entirely on magic or archery. That's why it's not working. You're not using it as intended.

I use it almost exclusively for my Spellsword.

1. Cast cloak

2. Run in

3. Push enemy into a wall with it

4. ???

5. Profit Stunlock

Ha! This spell is great. I just did the Wolfskull cave thing and when I got to the top of the tower where they are doing the summoning all of the necromancers were tossed off the side of the tower. All I had to do was run up to them and, poof, goodbye. Don't hit the ground too hard. Fun times.

As some others have said, it's a really good spell for Mages and Rangers.
It forces distance between you and the enemy by launching the enemy away from you.
Although, it's most effective when you're a Long/Mid-Range fighter, and an enemy using Melee comes running at you with his Sword or whatever.
I find it quite hillarious watching them try to hit me, and then watching them get thrown backwards, only for me to Electrocute them to death.

thanks, I'm getting frustrated as I did a handful of quests for him and still haven't gotten this quest...is it one of the help with research quests? he cast some spell on me and it says wait for side effects but I haven't had anything happen in a few days

this sounds useful in giving you time to charge master spells without the ethereal shout

I just kept asking Neloth if he needed any help with his research and he sent me to get a book. After that he said the spell would be available for purchase in a few days.

It's weird. Sometimes it works 9/10 of the time, other times it works 1/10 of the time. I think it has something to do with Necromage being on my character. Maybe it has wonky effects regarding the chance multiplier?

I believe the spell says it has a chance of flinging people away. Vampires with the necromage perk seem to have a much higher chance. In my case its almost every time. Its a chance per second type of spell
