White dots where walls collide

Post » Sat Dec 18, 2010 9:55 am

I have this issue that at some spots where pieces of walls collide i see white spots, they change position on a straight line when the camera is moved. So far i have only seen it in interiors. It's not everywhere, only in some houses.
Is there any way to remove them? Maybe by using ATI control panel? I have already tried disabling Catalyst A.I, without results.
I have an ATI HD4870, it is not overclocked. My drivers are up to date.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like: http://tinyurl.com/35tu738 http://tinyurl.com/2gyx6uu

I think the problem is that the walls in your game are colliding. They shouldn't even be moving in the first place!

I'm kidding- but it might be an issue with the anti-aliasing and lighting effects (reflectivity at improperly smoothed vertices being infinite maybe). For [censored] and giggles, try the ATI dxd9.dll fix (and yes you'll have to set all your graphics settings back up since it resets them to medium). This will be a quick way to see if it has something to do with an improperly chosen shader.

Also, out of curiosity, what graphics settings are you using now? If you have AA turned off entirely this might be the source of the problem. What lighting type are you using? HDR or Bloom? You can get some REALLY strange effects from either of those if they're misbehaving.

Im already using the performance .dll fix. The options menu says i have a Geforce 8800GS, which should happen according to the author of the fix. Im using AA x2 and HDR lighting.

-edit: it happens in this house in Nipton: http://tinyurl.com/2u5ts4j

I don't have ATI, but have you tried changing the texture filtering settings? I've seen dots like that in other games as a result of texture optimizations, for example nvidia has high quality (no optimizations), quality, performance, and high performance with the option of turning anisotropic sample optimizations and trilinear optimizations on or off. If you have something similar I would try playing around with it to see if it gets rid of them.

Oh well there's also a dll file generator for ATI users. Have you tried using a generated DLL rather than the stock ATI fix file?

Also, it doesn't look like you are using AA, at least not in the screenshot. I think you need to use a d3d9.dll that spoofs an ATI card in order to enable AA

It's just aliasing. You need to enable AA.

As he said, AA is already enabled.

Possibly try increasing it to 4x.

Yeah, try increasing to at least 4x. It doesn't look like there is any anti aliasing though, even 2x

Thanks for the replies.

I tried the .dll generator, the game now says i have the 4800 series but the dots are still there.

I installed Ati Tray Tools and made sure that all optimizations are off. I even tried disabling 'optimize pixel shader code'.

Anti Aliasing is now on x4 but the dots are still there. I also tried forcing AA through the control center/tray tools.

It may look like AA is not working because those white dots are not blended at all, its like theyre not even being processed.

I am wondering if AA is working correctly so i have a screenie here you can look at. Check out the flagpole.

Can someone check the same house if the dots appear for you too?

Your AA is definitely working correctly, there are less jaggies in one photo vs the off one. Hmm.... I still say check texture filtering. On nvidia, I had no idea what the options meant and it was like "anisotropic sample optimization" and "trilinear optimization" and I was like "well both sound important" but that was fail because it means the driver will uses bilinear or trilinear when an anisotropic (think traqezoid background) is not called for.
