Who Is The Best Developer Publisher And Why?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 11:33 am

As for Kojima Productions, they're mostly Metal Gear (though Konami refers to all of Kojima's past games as KojiPro titles). Metal Gear also happens to be one of my top five game series of all time and KojiPro makes them very well. Maybe we'll get to see them do something else one of these days, and when that time comes I'll definitely be on the edge of my seat.
Their latest project is supposedly not a metal gear title. We don't know anything about it except that it's not metal gear and it's called Project Ogre though.

Yeah, I saw the few pictures Kojima tweeted a while back. It looked awfully Metal Gear-ish though so I was worried the bit about it being something else wasn't entirely truthful, but it probably just shares common elements. Either way, I'm excited, especially since it'll be running on FOX Engine.

All publishers are awful. They rush the development process, stifle creativity, punish innovation, and are the driving force behind the homogenizing effect of "mass market appeal". I no longer buy games that are published by publishers (only self-published or independently published).

Since I am boycotting publishers, I have a defacto boycott against large developers as well.

CD Projekt for being awesome with The Witcher 2 and GOG.

Eidos Montreal for making a Deus Ex prequel as their first game, that is multiplatform and released 11 years after the original, that somehow managed to be an awesome game with a good PC port.

EA because they pay me to write this.

As of existing developers, Paradox Interactive wins the cake. They are the few companies that listen to their fans, make their games and patches by player demands (they even hold polls "what game we should do next") and their games are just simply awesome.

CD Projekt and Bethesda top my list. Both have made an effort to support their recent titles after release. I gotta hand it to Bethesda for their consistent support of the modding community. Not many devs do that, let alone AAA devs. Also:

-Eidos Montreal did a great job with DX3. No riding coattails here.
-EgoSoft is awesome with the community and continues to make Space Sims.

CD Projeckt Red by a mile, it's not even close. They are releasing the enhanced edition on Tuesday and if you already got a PC version of Witcher 2, you get it for free. Name another Developer/Publisher that would do that because I certainly can't think of any. Not even Beth would do this.

Rockstar Games simply for the Grand Theft Auto franchise and Red Dead Redemption. I find it astounding how much fun gameplay, great graphics and amazing environments they manage to put in these games while also delivering great stories, interesting characters and pretty amazing dialogue. They give the full package.

Ensemble Studios is dead, but I still consider them to be the best RTS developer in the business. Age of Empires was one of the very first games I have ever played and I never truly realized how amazing the mechanics of this franchise was until I had played other RTS games. I tried Warcraft 2 and 3; the Starcraft series; the Battle for Middle Earth series; Empire at War and Forces of Corruption; C&C Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge, Generals and Red Alert 3; Universe at War: Earth Assault; Rise of Nations, Thrones and Patriots and Rise of Legends; and none of them compared to any of the PC games that Ensemble Studios made in my opinion.

Their recent track record isn't so good though... From what I've heard Sword of the Stars 2 and Gettysburg: Armored Warfare should never have been released when they did, they were (and AFAIK still are) completely broken due to bugs and not ready for release.

Magicka's release day buggyness is nothing compared to it.

They definitely publish some unique games though.

Yeah EgoSoft is great as well. Almost as good as CD Projekt in the customer service department (but why, oh WHY DID YOU ONLY RELEASE ALBION PRELUDE ON STEAM!!).

I have to say that I've not been paying attention to their recent exploits. As a long term fan I'm more interested in their classic titles like Hearts of Iron which they have been dealing with very well. One of my favorite things about Paradox is their habit of letting fans using the games' hardcoded stuff to make their own stand-alone remakes which are then released as full games with full marketing and support. Few, if any, developers do this.

It's true that they release their games in a half-broken state though. Patches will always come a week or two later though so it has not bothered me really.

CD Project RED.

I just bought The Witcher 2 Premium Edition (which is ironically the standard edition in Hungary) for 5000 HUF (~22 bucks), and its insane how much stuff they packed in it.
Soundtrack, map, game guide, to name a few, you can google it if you want.
Not to mention the free update to the enhanced edition once it's out.
And GoG of course. GoG is awesome.

Which companies have really made a positive impression on you?

In the old days: Bullfrog, Blizzard, Impressions, Cyberlore (purely for Majesty+their ppl were great)
The past several years: Obsidian, Gearbox
Right this minute: Almost Human, based on Legends of Grimrock.

I liked Morrowind quite a bit but not Oblivion and Skyrim was sort of a wash for me...so while I respect Bethesda a lot for some of the aspects/features in their RPG's, for me they're not the "best." And I think as time goes on I'm going to be looking more and more at smaller indie developers as being the "best."

Well, what they said would be in TW2 wasn't in the game at release ( 3d support among other things). The game really wasn't in fighting shape until patch 2.0. They also need to fix some persistent bugs that have been reported by the community for over a year now. So yeah, I love em' but they aren't perfekt.

Square Enix and Atlus for me

Even if fans haven't really enjoyed recent releases from Square the future releases look very promising (FF Type-0 and FF XIII Versus). Not only that but previous releases, especially the PS1 era releases, were exceptionally good games all around.

Blizzard: I know in my heart that a new Warcraft RTS will be coming soon.

Creative Assembly: What's not to love about Total War games, and completely [censored] up history?

That's really the two I know well enough. If I knew the developers of other games I like I'd probably name them, but I don't.

EDIT: Ah, forgot about Paradox interactive. Their games are master-pieces.

If they'd port it to PC I'd forget all about the mess that was GTA 4 when it launched and crown them my favourite too. :P
